NHC holds Food Drive/Pet Day for Kennett Humane Department

NHC holds Food Drive/Pet Day
for Kennett Humane
Department
“The best things in life are are rescued.” That is
the motto that Tena Petix and Kayla Gozell use
when running the Kennett Humane Department. They go above and beyond to make sure
the stray animals in our community are rescued. It
costs money to not only house and feed the animals but it is also costly to pay for the medical attention that many of them desperately need. KHD
runs entirely off of donations given to them from
around the community and that is where NHC of
Kennett comes in.
NHC residents are huge animal lovers and love
the idea of giving back to the community. They all
wanted to plan a food drive to benefit the humane
department. We advertised in the community that
the facility would be taking donations up until May
12th. That day was a Pet Day for the residents.
They enjoyed visiting with animals while selling
treats that they had made. There also would be
raffle tickets sold for a pet gift basket. The basket
was valued at $160 and include a $30 gift certificate
for grooming that was donated by The Dog
House.
On the Tuesday before the food drive residents
started preparing rice krispie treats and puppy
chow to sell to staff, residents and visitors in the
facility. Then on Wednesday they made homemade dog treats to sell to the attendants of
Pet Day. The patients took different shifts to sell
the treats and tickets for the basket. They started
selling the items on Wednesday morning at 7 A.M.
and ended on Thursday afternoon at 4 P.M. Our
Pet Day was a huge success with 11 dogs in attendance including one dog that was adopted from
KHD nearly 4 years ago. The residents loved visiting with the dogs and their owners.
The day after the drive, Tena Petix and Ace came
out to collect the donations. The residents were so
proud to be able to present her with $551 for the
Kennett Humane Department. They were also able
to present her with quite a few donations from staff
and other members of the community. National
Health Care is proud to support animals, KHD,
and Kennett.

Mrs. Ruth Dempsey entered our
facility 7 years ago. Mrs. Dempsey has 3
sons, 1 daugher, 6 grandchildren and many
great-grandchildren. For many years she
worked at Emerson Electric and then as a
Walmart door greeter. She states that she
loved being friendly to people as they came
in to shop.
Ruth comes to all scheduled facility activities and says that watching movies is one of
her favorite activities, along with Bingo. She
told me that going to movies was something
that she enjoyed doing prior to admission.
When I asked Ruth what else she used to do
for enjoyment she reminisced on the days
that she was a softball pitcher in her youth.
Ruth ended our conversation in telling me,
“I like it here. All of the people are good
and I love everybody,” and we all love her,
too.

April 28th 2016 is a date that was bittersweet for all National
Healthcare of Kennett employees. That day we said goodbye to June
Craig, Director of Nursing. For the past 26 years, she has had a very
special place in the residents' and employees' hearts. Since 1990, when
she first came to National Healthcare, June has had a great impact on
the facility, putting her heart into everything she did. June has put in
extra hours, extra love and extra care into every responsibility she was
given.
I asked a resident, Carol McCarroll, if she had anything special she'd
like to say on behalf of June and she responded, “I just love her. She is
so smart, funny, sweet & caring. If I ever had a concern or question, I
knew to take it to June and it would be taken care of immediately. I
miss passing her office and joking with her every day.” I know that
many other residents have that same feeling toward June.
June was a role model to many in her nursing career. Following in
her footsteps, her daughter became an LPN, her twin granddaughters
became RN's and her granddaughter-in-law became a RN, as well and
they have all at some point, if not still, worked at the facility, following
in her footsteps. At her departure, June left with a full heart, knowing
her granddaughter, Jessica, has accepted the position as the new Director of Nursing.
Fellow nurse, Sandy Gunn, who has been honored to work with June
for said, “In working with June over the last 20 years, I have found her
to be true example of a great nurse, a strong supervisor, a great leader,
and a wonderful friend. I have been a nurse for 30 years. In the first 10
years before coming to NHC I had 7 different DON's. Working here, I
got to work with the same one for 20 years. June's longevity with NHC
says a lot about her dedication, devotion, and her character as a person.
One of her favorite quotes to us as supervisors has always been,
“people don't always do what you expect, they only do what you inspect,” and I will always remember that. June has taught me as well as
several others, what it takes to be strong as a person and as a nurse. She
will be greatly missed here at NHC. We all love her and wish her the
best, as she greatly deserves it.”
As for me, I will miss June Craig in our facility everyday, and this departure was especially bittersweet. I see the love that all the residents
and employees have for her, and it's a warm feeling knowing that she
means so much to so many. I am happy to have had the chance to be
employed at NHC working with June, or as I call her, Nanny.
