Introduction
Welcome to SmarterStats Enterprise Edition, the first log analysis package that offers both
Administrators and end users alike an unprecedented amount of control over all aspects of the
reporting of their web log statistics. Administrators can manage the resources used by SmarterStats, and
end users can manage how their statistics are displayed, all the way down to the time zone used when
the statistics are processed. Factor in the ability to apply any custom style or skin to the design of
SmarterStats and you have the perfect web log analysis tool for your organization. Built with both ease of-use and power in mind, the pricing structure for SmarterStats Enterprise Edition is appealing to all
manner of medium to large enterprises, from ISPs and web hosts to major corporations needing reliable
log file analysis.
What Is SmarterStats Enterprise Edition?
SmarterStats Enterprise Edition is the most advanced web analytic software currently available. It is built
and priced for companies such as medium to large web hosts, internet service providers, corporations,
or various other enterprise-level organizations running a distributed architecture network. Using a web
interface and a remote service at the server level, the functionality of SmarterStats Enterprise is
optimally distributed across your network to provide advanced features for system administrators and
end users alike.
SmarterStats Enterprise Edition was also built to decrease the overall cost of providing web analytics,
and in most cases it will end up saving companies over 50% of the costs of competing products. In
addition to providing the system administrator with advanced features, the client (i.e. marketing or sales
departments, webmasters, etc.) will have access to the most advanced reporting system available, from
anywhere at any time, further increasing the return on investment.
In addition to the various benefits you will find with SmarterStats Enterprise Edition, there were features
missing from competing products that SmarterTools Inc. felt were essential to a cost effective, yet
powerful, web analytics package. Below are explanations of a few of these:
The ability to reduce the size of web server log files and disk space overhead rather than adding to a
company's disk space requirements like other competing products:




It can take terabytes of space for some ISP's to save and store log files for their customers.
SmarterStats Enterprise Edition reduces disk space requirements by nearly 90%, which can
drastically reduce the costs associated with hard drives, tape backup systems, etc. For many
large ISP's and hosting companies, this can save thousands of dollars on a monthly basis.
The ability to reduce the number of Management or Reporting Servers 30 to 1 over competing
products.
Many competing products can support around 1,000 to 2,000 sites per reporting server.
SmarterStats Enterprise Edition incorporates an optimized distributed architecture that
drastically reduces the number of servers needed for management and reporting. This results in
less software licenses and hardware costs associated with additional servers.
The creation of automation tools to support the automatic provisioning of sites.

LEGACY PRODUCT
As SmarterTools Inc. works with some of the largest companies in the world, we must be able to build
and provide tools that assist in automated creation, deletion and other management functions so that
the cost of ownership can be drastically reduced. SmarterStats Enterprise Edition solves this by
providing industry standard Web Services that can be implemented very quickly, and in high usage
environments.
How SmarterStats Works
Three main components work together in SmarterStats Enterprise Edition, the Web Interface, Service
and Web Server.
Web Interface
The Web Interface is a browser-based administration platform that installs on a single server and
supports all users as well as Enterprise administrators who are managing the usage of the SmarterStats
application. Users, when checking statistics, creating filters, creating custom reports, or checking various
reports and report items will do so by accessing SmarterStats via the Web Interface. Administrators who
install SmarterStats, add, delete or move sites, check various admin functions, etc. will also do so via the
Web Interface.
Windows Service
The SmarterStats Service can reside on the same machine as the Web Interface as a Service and/or
reside on each separate web server as a Remote Service. It is responsible for 90% of all local processing
done by SmarterStats, like gathering the log information, processing the log information, and then
communicating results back to the Web Interface for display. This is the primary reason the Web
Interface can handle upwards of 50,000 individual websites: the majority of processing the information
is done on each web server versus processing on the Web Interface server. In addition, the local service
uses available CPU, but at the lowest priority. So that if any other application (such as IIS) with a higher
priority requires CPU, the stats engine will fall into the background. This way we ensure performance for
SmarterStats as well as for other applications on the server.
Web Server
SmarterStats includes a basic web server that installs behind the Web Interface by default so no
configuration is necessary for SmarterStats to function properly directly after it is installed. However, it
is advisable that, after installing SmarterStats in a medium to large environment, the Web Interface
should be moved from the SmarterStats Web Server to Microsoft IIS for more stability and security. For
step by step instructions of this process, see Converting to IIS under the installation section of the help
menu.
System Requirements
The overall requirements of SmarterStats Enterprise Edition are rather minimal as it will only use the
resources you assign to it. In addition, SmarterStats components are speed optimized to where the only
limitation in performance is in the quality of hardware used for the server(s).
Page

LEGACY PRODUCT
One of the unique benefits of SmarterStats is the ability to manage the resources it consumes. This can
be extremely beneficial as administrators may choose to give SmarterStats a low or high priority when
compared to other applications running on the same server. Therefore, when looking at an installation
of either the SmarterStats Web Interface or the Remote Service, Network and System Administrators
will need to take a few things into consideration: the size of the individual web sites that will be
provisioned on the server in terms of monthly traffic, and the size of the log files generated for those
sites. Obviously, the larger the site, and the larger the log files, the more resources SmarterStats will
require to process and analyze the log files. SmarterStats is completely customizable for compatibility in
any configuration.
The Web Interface runs as a simple website inside its own web server (SmarterTools Web server) or can
be run from a web server (like IIS) that is already installed on the server. It is actually advisable that
SmarterStats run on a web server other than the one included in the installation as other web servers,
such as IIS, are best suited for enterprise level applications.
The Web Interface is a .NET web application that can consume between 64MB worth of RAM in a
medium up to 128MB of RAM in a large configuration. However, the amount of resources used is
dependent upon the number and size of the websites and log files that are installed and analyzed.
The Remote Service itself can run on any web server. Extremely large sites (i.e. more than 1,000,000 hits
per day) with extremely large log files may require the service to use up to 256MB of memory.
Obviously, this should be taken into consideration when looking at a specific web server's hardware
configuration.
Minimum software/OS requirements for both the Remote Service and the Web Interface are:






The .NET framework (with all applicable service packs and/or patches).
Windows Operating System:
Windows 2000 Server (SP2 recommended)
Windows 2003
IIS 5 or IIS 6 (or simply use the basic web server included in the SmarterStats installation)
Currently, SmarterStats Enterprise Edition supports these common log file types: W3C, IIS and
NCSA.

Getting Started
Logging In
You will need to obtain the link to your SmarterStats server's web site from your Administrator or
Domain Administrator.
To login to SmarterStats, type in your Site ID, Username, and Password on the login screen. If everything
matches up, you will be presented with the welcome page and a summary of the last 7 days.
One thing to notice on the Login page is the "Remember Me" checkbox. By checking this box
SmarterStats encrypts your login and password, then you can close the browser window and not have to
re-log in when you return. This function works as long as you do not "log out" of SmarterStats prior to
closing your browser window. If you do log out, you will have to log back in upon your return, regardless
of whether the "Remember Me" box was checked or not. You will need cookies enabled on your
browser for this feature to work.
Understanding Report Items
Report Items are the backbone of the SmarterStats application, and every statistic taken from your log
files (e.g. Top Paths) is considered a Report Item. Many Report Items make up a single Report. For
example, a "Webmaster Report" would have a "Top Path" report item, a "Top Entry Pages" report item,
etc.
SmarterStats provides a Report Item drop down menu so end-users know all the Report Items that are
available for use.
Report items are described in detail in Appendix B: Report Item Reference.
Understanding Standard Reports
As described in "Understanding Report Items", Report Items display only one type of statistic taken from
your log files. "Standard Reports", on the other hand, are a collection of Report Items that serve to
convey information as a whole, rather than one piece at a time, and are most beneficial to a particular
person or occupation. For example, a Webmaster maintaining a site would find the Webmaster Report
to be very beneficial as it includes many Report Items relating to the website (visitor statistics, browsers
used, server errors, etc.).
Standard reports are described in detail in Appendix C: Standard Reports.
Understanding Custom Reports
Custom Reports are similar to Standard Reports (see Understanding Standard Reports) except that with
Custom Reports, you are able to add the Report Items you find most beneficial and generate your own
Report.
SmarterStats comes with many “Standard Reports” but it may not have all the report items you would
like to see. For information on how to create a custom report click here and add the report items you
Page
13
[SMARTERSTATS 1.X - 2.X DOCUMENTATION]
LEGACY PRODUCT
would like. After you name and save the report, it will immediately be listed under the Custom Reports
menu.
Understanding Interactive Reports
Interactive reports are different than Standard and Custom Reports, and do not use the Report Items
available for general use. Whereas Custom and Standard Reports provide a general overview of the
various statistics available from your log files, Interactive Reports take this general information a
quantum step further and provide you with fully-detailed reports that allow you to drill-down into and
"data mine" actual statistical data. These reports are priceless for tracking customers through your
ordering process, for seeing which marketing campaigns are providing the highest return on your
investment, or for a variety of other tasks requiring a large-scale, fully detailed analysis of your website
traffic.
For example, let's look at the first Interactive Report: Top Entry/Exit Pages:
By allowing the end-user to the view the Top Entry and Exit pages for any one particular page within
their website, the end-user is able to see which marketing campaign or link sharing system is delivering
the most orders. For instance, by choosing "thankyou.asp", the page shown after an order is placed, a
Marketing Director can see the Top Entry/Exit pages that were used by people who actually placed an
order. As a result, the Director sees that the majority of people placing orders entered through
"Default_cnn.htm", the page linked to from a showcase ad placed on CNN's website. The Director can
then decide that the CNN advertisement is returning the most traffic and renew the ad and/or
discontinue the other campaigns running that aren't returning the same amount of orders. This level of
detail is not present in the standard Top Entry and Top Exit Report Items as those are not based off a
certain page, but are more general Entry and Exit Pages.
For more information about Interactive Reports, please see Appendix D: Interactive Reports.
Browser Support Information
Various browsers interpret information from web pages differently. Due to the differences in browsers,
various options in SmarterStats may act differently based on the browser and OS being used.

Frequently Asked Questions
Below is a list of the most frequently asked questions about SmarterStats.
What role does the SmarterStats Web Interface play?
The Web Interface is a powerful tool that is easy to install and configure. It allows the creation of
Internet accounts so users can log in and view statistics on any pertaining web site. The Web Interface is
a dynamic web site that installs on any one server in your network and summarizes statistical reports,
accessible from any browser locally or from the Internet. It requires the Microsoft .NET Framework
installed to function properly (through Windows update). Microsoft IIS is recommended although any
web server compatible with Microsoft will work.
What is the Remote Service that installs as part of the Enterprise Edition?
The SmarterStats Service can reside on the same machine as the Web Interface as a Service and/or
reside on each separate web server as a Remote Service. It is responsible for 90% of all local processing
done by SmarterStats, like gathering the log information, processing the log information, and then
communicating results back to the Web Interface for display. This is the primary reason the Web
Interface can handle upwards of 50,000 individual websites: the majority of processing the information
is done on each web server versus processing on the Web Interface server.
If I am using host headers will SmarterStats work for me?
This is dependent upon the particular setup, but normally the answer is yes. Host headers can be setup
under IIS as their own entry. If they are setup in this manner, each host header will have its own log files,
and its own log file directory. As long as the host headers are setup in this fashion, they will work with
SmarterStats.
Can the Web Interface run on the same server as a mail server, or any other type of software?
Yes. The SmarterStats Web Interface and/or the Remote Service can run in combination with any other
products you install on a server. As the Remote Service is configurable, you can have it use only those
resources you want it to.
If I have 30 web servers and I want to have one Web Interface where all servers and sites will exist,
what version should I use?
You would require the Enterprise Version. The Enterprise version allows management of unlimited
servers and almost unlimited sites. You purchase additional site license for the Enterprise version in
place of buying a license for every server in the professional versions. In addition, the professional
version would require you logging into one of the 30 different servers to manage a particular site.
If I have one site on 20 different servers, my best option would be Enterprise?
Yes. Why buy 20 copies of the professional version if you can buy one copy of Enterprise.
Page
15
[SMARTERSTATS 1.X - 2.X DOCUMENTATION]
LEGACY PRODUCT
Are there any other features that are available only in the Enterprise version?
Yes. Since managing multiple servers isn’t an option in the Professional version, the “Move Site”
features are only available in the Enterprise version. In the Enterprise environment, you can click on a
site you wish to move to another server and SmarterStats Enterprise will move the site "behind the
scenes", freeing you from having to manually move the site to the new server. In addition to the "Move
Site" feature, the email reporting options are only available in the Enterprise version as well. This
enables End-Users to set up email reports on daily, weekly, or monthly intervals.
Can I upgrade to the Enterprise version from Professional?
Not easily. You will want to decide what your infrastructure will look like in the near future to avoid any
manual or upgrading that might be needed. Trying to move from a single server environment to a
distributed environment in any product is difficult due to different ways the product will be managed.
Can I upgrade Enterprise versions from 250 domains to 500 domains or more?
Yes. This requires very little effort as no re-installation is needed and allows people to buy for their
current needs and upgrade in the future. It is not SmarterTools intention to make people purchase for
years in the future. Rather, we feel it is only necessary to purchase a product on a per-usage basis.
My old stats package allowed me to create a "Watch". Is this feature available in SmarterStats?
Yes and no. While, in certain instances, a watch can be beneficial, there is one main liability to the
watches other log analysis products allow: the watch only affects data from the time the watch is
created and forward, you cannot apply a watch to older log files. SmarterStats believes that users should
be able to query and retrieve data from not only current and continual log files, but from previous
months' logs as well. The Interactive Reports feature within the SmarterStats application allows users to
data mine, or "drill down", into their site's logs and retrieve both current and past data. Also, in a literal
sense, SmarterStats "watches" all data, and can return information on all data. Customers are not
limited to simply the top 50 or top 100 results, they can see all the data available. Finally, the ability of
SmarterTools to add to the list of Interactive Reports currently available should account for any type of
"watch" users would want, and need, for a complete analysis of their site's traffic.
What does the "unknown" result mean in my Referral Reports?
Generally, when you see the "unknown" reference in the Report Items, it is because there was no
reference to that particular stat in the User Agents contained in your log files. For example, a standard
User Agent for a person using Windows 2000 and Internet Explorer 6.0 would be:
MOZ ILLA /4.0 (COMPATIBLE ; MSIE
6.0; WINDOWS NT 5.0).
However, it is not uncommon for User Agents to leave out specific pieces of information, like browser
version or platform. This can happen for a number of reasons, most commonly firewall restrictions on
Page
16
[SMARTERSTATS 1.X - 2.X DOCUMENTATION]
LEGACY PRODUCT
the visitor's part. Therefore, if a person visited your site from behind a firewall that blocked browser
version, the User Agent listed above would be:
MOZ ILLA /4.0( COMPATIBLE ; WINDOWS NT
5.0)
This would generate an "unknown" for that visitor under the Browsers and Microsoft Browsers Report
Items.
Why is it that I can have a Visit, but no Views associated with those Visits?
There are any number of reasons a Visit would not generate a View: if, for some reason, a person
accessed and downloaded a graphic file or text document, if a search engine spider visited your site it
will generally index the code but not necessarily view any particular page, if someone accessed your site
but received a Page Not Found (404) error, etc.
What does the "No Referrer" result mean in some Report Items?
If a person types your web site address, or the URL to any particular page within your web site, directly
into their browser's address bar, or if your site is their homepage when they open the browser, there
will not be a referral for that visit because the visitor is not coming from someplace prior to hitting your
site, they are coming directly to your site. There are also some scripts that can be used to block referral
information when a visitor navigates from one web site to another.
Do errors count as hits, views or visits?
No. All 400 and 500 errors are noted in separate reports. Therefore, the various views, visits and hits
Report Items count only "true" views, visits and hits. SmarterTools did this to ensure you saw your
actual site traffic, not inflated numbers that may, or may not, have any bearing on your site.

Installation and Setup
Pre-installation
Before installing SmarterStats, ensure that you have DirectX installed on the server you wish to use as
the reporting server. To obtain the latest version of DirectX, click here, or use the Microsoft Windows
Update service.
Installation
There is one Setup file to install SmarterStats Enterprise Edition. The Setup has an option to load a "Full
Install" which will install the Web Interface and the Service. Complete the "Full Installation" for the Web
Interface first, as only one is needed. However, you will want to install the Service on the distributed
web servers. You may do so by loading the installer on each Web Server and choosing "Service Only."
The Service will install and add itself to the Service Manager. There is no front-end administration
interface for the Service, but you can make sure it was installed, and is running, by going to Start>Programs->Administrative Tools->Services and scrolling down to see "SmarterStats Enterprise Edition
Services". The Service should be running and is set to start automatically (see screenshot below). Install
this Service on each web server.
The Web Interface
The Web Interface installs with the SmarterStats Web Server and binds itself to the IP 127.0.0.1 port
9999. By default it is set to respond to all IPs. You can then access the Web Interface by double clicking
the icon on the desktop, or typing in "http://127.0.0.1:9999/login.aspx" locally in a browser, or typing
"http://YourDomainName:9999/Login.aspx" from the Internet.
The first time you access the Web Interface, log in using the following default settings:



Site ID = admin
Username = admin
Password = admin
NOTE: for Web Interface Administrators the Site ID will always be "admin" (less the quotation marks).
Activate License Key
After logging in, you will then see an activation page. Choose to activate a purchased version.
To activate your product, enter the License Key, Email Address and Password that was provided in the
email from SmarterTools after your purchase. Click on the "activate now" button complete your product
activation. If you have any problems with activation, please contact SmarterTools support.
Adding Servers to the Web Interface
Once you have installed the Web Interface, and have the Service installed on your web servers, you are
ready to start adding servers and websites to the Web Interface. You will need to add servers that have
the Service installed on them, prior to actually adding sites to those servers.

LEGACY PRODUCT
To add a server to the Web Interface, log in as the administrator and click on the "Manage" menu. Select
"Add Server” and the main add server screen will display. Servers need to be added regardless of
whether they reside on the same machine as the Web Interface, or on separate web servers.
Add a Server ID for the web server (Server IDs must be integers greater than 0. If you do not use integers
for your Server IDs, you will need to create a lookup table in your database to convert your Server IDs to
integers) or click the "assign unused id" button.
Enter the IP address associated with the web server.
Enter the name of the web server.
Finally, click on the "add" button to make the addition permanent. All server additions are available for
use immediately, but do require the SmarterStats service to be installed before you can begin adding
sites to that server.
Adding Sites to the Web Interface
To add a site to the Web Interface, log in as the administrator of the SmarterStats application (if you are
not already) and click on the "Manage" menu. Select "Add Site” and the main add sites wizard will
display.
Add a Site ID for the web site (e.g. 123. Site IDs must be integers greater than 0. If you do not use
integers for your Site IDs, you will need to create a lookup table in your database to convert your Site IDs
to integers) or click the "assign unused id" button.
Select the web server the website resides on from the dropdown list box (the list will display servers that
have already been added to the Web Interface. If the server you want to place the site on does not show
up, it will need to be added before you can start putting sites on it).
Enter the domain name into the domain name textbox (e.g. smartertools.com).
Select the time zone that you would like the statistics processed under.
Click on the "next" button.
Create a username and password for the Site Admin. The Site Admin will be the administrator for this
domain only.
Enter the first name and last name of the Site Admin in charge of the site (this will, generally, be the site
owner's name).
Click on the "next" button.
Select the method that the Web Interface will use to aquire the original log files: Local Path, UNC Path or
download from FTP server.

Local Path or UNC Path
Indicate the full path to where the log files reside on the web server. This is usually set during the
installation of the web site on the server. Full paths are required (e.g.
c:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 for a local path or
\\webservername\c$\inetpub\domainname\logs\ for a UNC path)
*Browse: Clicking the browse button allows users to browse the drive to the location of the files
Set the auto deletion for the number of days that the original log files remain on the web server.
*Note: This setting automatically deletes log files from the time frame you select. This is a complete
deletion and is not something that can be undone. It is important that this setting only be selected if you
no longer need the files or if they are backed up elsewhere.
Click on the "next" button.
Download from FTP server
Enter the URL for the FTP server (eg. ftp.yourdomain.com)
Enter the port that the FTP server uses (default is 21).
Enter the path of the directory where the original logs reside.
Enter the Username and Password of the account to be used for FTP access.
Enter the Interval or how often you would like the logs downloaded.
Click on the "next" button.
Enter the log file wildcards (i.e. specify the format of the log titles, with dates or other variable
information removed: *.log ).
Select the log file format (W3C, NCSA, IIS).
Select the maximum number of months you want the SmarterLog files to be stored. SmarterLog files are
in a compressed format, which allows you to store a wider date range of logs versus saving the standard
web server log files. A good default value for this setting is C:\SmarterLogs.
Enter the full path of where you would like the SmarterStats log files to resided for this website. This
should be a location dedicated to storing the SmarterLog files on a drive with ample free space. Full
paths are required (e.g. c:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1\smarterstats or d:\SmarterLogs as
the SmarterLog files do not have to reside on the same drive as the website itself).
*Browse: Clicking the browse button allows users to browse the drive to the location of the file s

Enter the location where log files will be exported to. This option refers to where the log files will be
placed when the user asks to download the files from the SmarterStats application. A good rule of
thumb is to put the logs back into the root of that particular site (e.g. c:\inetpub\wwwroot).
*Browse: Clicking the browse button allows users to browse the drive to the location of the files
Finally, enter the URL for the exported log files. This is the absolute link that is set up in order to allow
the user to retrieve the log file when the export is completed. Again, the full URL for that site should
suffice (e.g. http://www.smartertools.com).

Securing SmarterStats Config Folder
The SmarterStats config folder is where all of the Web Interface settings for users, websites, etc. reside.
In order to keep the Web Interface config file from being accessed via a browser, you will need to
remove "read" permissions from it. To do this, see the instructions below:



Right click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop of the server that the Web Interface is
installed on.
Select "Manage" from the menu that appears. The following should open up

Expand the "Default Website" tree menu item (or the custom website you created for the
SmarterStats website). You should now have a tree menu that looks like this:
Right click on the "Config" folder that appears once you expand the SmarterStats website and
select "properties".
If it isn't open by default, click on the "Directory" tab that appears at the top of the Properties
window.
You'll notice the "Read" permissions box at the left of the "Config Properties" window. YOU
WILL NEED TO UNCHECK THIS BOX IN ORDER TO REMOVE READ PERMISSIONS FOR THE CONFIG
FOLDER.
Once this is done, close the Config Properties box, and any other windows that are open. The "Config"
folder is now inaccessible via a web browser. Please note that removing "read" permissions from the
Config folder will not prevent the SmarterStats application from running. All you are doing is keeping
people from accessing the folder using a web browser.
Activating SmarterStats Enterprise Edition
Upon installation, SmarterStats will offer activation options for your selection. By default, SmarterStats
will install as a fully-functional single site/single server trial version with no expiration date set for the
trial period. The addition of more than one site, or the incorporation of a distributed architecture (many
sites spread over many servers), will require the purchase of a full version license of SmarterStats.
However, if you have already purchased a license for SmarterStats, you can input it here for activation.
The version of SmarterStats that activates on your server depends upon the type of license you
purchase. Once the license is acquired, you can activate it by logging into SmarterStats as the
administrator and selecting "Help --> Product Activation" and . By clicking on the 'activate key' button
you are presented with the ability to input your license and the email address used during the license
purchase. After the license and all pertinent information is added, the SmarterStats Web Interface will
communicate with the SmarterTools Licensing Server for verification and activation. This communication
occurs along port 80, so if, for whatever reason, the communication is blocked (e.g. from a firewall) the
license will not verify and activate.
If you are unable to activate the product with the license, please contact us for a manual activation of
the product.
When changing or upgrading license types, you simply need to come back to "Help --> Product
Activation" and click the 'activate key' button. You will once again be prompted for your license key and
email address. After clicking 'ok', the upgraded or changed license is activated and ready for use.

Administration
There are two different levels of users that can access the Web Interface, the Web Interface
Administrator and End Users. Additionally, there is a Site Admin designation that falls under the End
Users user level that grants specific privileges not granted to standard End Users.
The Administrator has complete control over the Web Interface and all of the sites and servers within
the SmarterStats Enterprise installation. The Administrator can add/remove web servers and
add/remove web sites as well as adjust the settings on web sites (globally) that report to the Web
Interface.
A standard User is able to view all Reports (Standard, Interactive, Custom and Interactive) for their
designated web site, so the creation of a standard User is perfect for people who just want access to
their site statistics and/or want to create a Custom Report for their site. Users with Site Admin privileges
are usually the owner of a web site or domain who can add/remove users to his/her web site, change
site settings and configure email reports, as well as view any and all Reports and Report Items.
The "Administrator" section of SmarterStats Enterprise Edition Help entails all the settings of a Web
Interface Administrator. All administration tasks of SmarterStats Enterprise Edition are handled via the
Web Interface. Whenever a change is made to an individual site, a block of sites or to a server itself, the
Remote Service will automatically adjust itself to handle these changes. The Administration functions of
SmarterStats are broken down into three main categories (Manage, Config and Status), and each main
category has a number of different subcategories.
Administration items are broken into two general categories: Manage Sites and Manage Servers.
The Manage Sites option gives you the ability to initially add sites to the Web Interface. You can also
search for a particular site that is using SmarterStats, either across your Enterprise or by individual
server, and get the site info, edit the site, or delete the site from the Web Interface.
The Manage Servers option gives you the ability to do just that: see a list of the servers the SmarterStats
service is installed on, the server ID, the server IP, and the ability to see the server info, edit the service
on a particular server, or delete the service from the server.

View Site
Clicking on view is the same link as clicking on the site name link. This link will bring you to the home
page of a web site. This home page is the same that is viewed when a End User logs in.
Site Information
The Site Information area gives Admins information on the log files that currently in the SmarterStats
queue, as well as a history of the log files that have been processed by the SmarterStats application.
Information given is the actual log file name, the last time stamp on the log file, and the number of rows
that were processed in that log file. Admins can also select the number of rows that they want displayed
by selecting a number from the "Rows" drop down menu. Each column heading is clickable, so each
column can be listed in descending order.
There are also several buttons at the top of the page that perform a variety of functions:
Send Email Reports - The "Send Email Reports" button will send all email reports that recorded an error
at their normal send time. This button will not send all email reports again, only those that were not
sent normally.
Reimport - The "Reimport" button will cause all log files associated with a particular domain to be
reimported, from the earliest log file to the latest.
Reprocess - The "Reprocess" button will cause all log file data to be reprocessed, but not reimported.
Move - The "Move" button allows a site's statistics to be moved between servers that are supported by
the SmarterStats Web Interface. This only moves the SmarterLogs, it does not move the physical site or
its standard log files.
Back - The "Back" button returns you to the previous page.
The current Service State is displayed in the drop down box. Click the drop down arrow and select the
preferred state To apply changes made to the service state, press the "update" button.
Running - This is the default and normal state for SmarterStats when processing log files or querying
various Report Items.
Pause - Select "Pause" to actually stop SmarterStats from processing log files, but all queries to various
Report Items will still be active and available.
Disable - Select "Disable" to stop SmarterStats from processing log files as well as stop all queries to the
various Report Items. This basically shuts SmarterStats down for that particular domain until the
"Running" button is selected.
Reprocessing Site Statistics
It is possible to manually reprocess statistics for a particular site from within SmarterStats
Administrative console. If changes are made to a site's configuration (e.g. a time zone change), it may be

necessary to reprocess the statistics to make those changes effective. To force a reprocess of a site's
statistics, do the following:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Log in to SmarterStats using your Admin Site ID, Username and Password.
Do a search for the site you want to reprocess the statistics for in the Manage Sites area.
When the site appears, click on the "info" link that shows up at the right.
The "Site Information" screen appears, showing you the site's status, as well as other
information.
5. Along the top of the information page is a row of buttons. Click on the "reprocess" button.
6. Click the "yes" button to confirm that you want to reprocess statistics for that site.
NOTE: Reprocessing a site's statistics will make the statistics for that site become unavailable until the
reprocess is complete. However, reprocessing occurs against the SmarterLog files which are, by nature,
much smaller than the standard web server log files. Therefore, the time required for reprocessing the
logs will be much shorter than if you were reprocessing off of the web server log files.
Moving a Site to another Server
SmarterStats has a move wizard built in to its infrastructure. Therefore, SmarterStats can handle moving
all files associated with a particular site from one server to another. This is just one more feature that
makes SmarterStats exceptionally appealing to System Administrators. To move a site, do the following:
1.
2.
3.
Click on the "move" button.
6. Click the "start move" button to confirm that you want to move all of its Smarter Log files to the
destination server.
NOTE: Moving a site's statistics will make the statistics for that site become unavailable until the
reprocess is complete. However, moving the SmarterLog files which are, by nature, much smaller than
the standard web server log files. Therefore, the time required for reprocessing the logs will be much
shorter than if you were reprocessing off of the web server log files.
Due to your Network settings, "Move Site" may not be available or may error. If this is the case, click
here for instructions on moving the site manually. If errors persist, contact your Network Administrator.

new location for the SmarterLogs.
Click Save. The site should now be moved.
Site Setup / Editing a Web site
Editing a web site is much like adding a web site. The Edit Site area is broken down into 4 main areas:
Site Information, Site Admin Information, Log Files and Smarter Logs and Exports.
Site Information
The Site Information box contains the Site ID, the Server that domain resides on, the Domain Name, and
the Time Zone that SmarterStats uses when processing the log files. Click on the "show server list"
button only if you want to select a different Web Interface for the site to reside (Enterprise Only). Please
be aware that the best method of changing the server assignment of a site is to perform a [Move] from
the Site Info page. The Domain Name is editable. However, by changing the Domain Name, you are
changing the domain throughout the SmarterStats Web Interface, so you should only edit the Domain
Name when absolutely necessary.
Admin Information
Admin Information pertains to the Main Administrator's First Name, Last Name, and their Admin login
and password. You can change and/or edit all information in this section. However, remember to note
any changes.
Log File Information
The Log File Information pertains to all aspects SmarterStats requires when importing, exporting and
processing your log files.
Select the log location that the Web Interface will use to acquire the original log files, Local Path/UNC
Path or download from FTP server.
Enter the log file wildcards (i.e. specify the format of the log titles, with dates or other variable
information removed: ex*.log ).

Log Files and Smarter Logs and Exports
Select the max number of months you want the Smarter log files to be stored. Smarter log files are in a
compressed format, allowing you to store a wider date range of logs versus saving the standard web
server log files.
Enter the location of the SmarterStats log files on the server. This should be a location dedicated to
storing the SmarterLog files on a drive with ample free space. Full paths are required (e.g.
c:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1\smarterstats) or (e.g. d:\SmarterLogs - Smarter log files do
not have to reside on the same drive as the website itself).
An End User can ask for a specific range of original log files for different types of parsing. This option
refers to where the log files will be placed when the user asks to download the files from the
SmarterStats application. SmarterStats will compress the logs in .zip format for the End User to
download. Enter the location where the compressed log files will reside for exportation. A good rule of
thumb is to put the logs back into the root of that particular site (e.g. c:\inetpub\wwwroot). If you do
not want users to access original log files, do not enter a path for this option.

Finally, enter the URL for the exported log files. This is the absolute link that is set up in order to allow
the user to retrieve the log file when the export is completed. Again, the full URL for that site should
suffice (e.g. http://www.smartertools.com or http://www.yourDomain.com ). This URL must have
access to the directory that you entered in the last step. It completes the global path for SmarterStats to
automatically package and deploy the .zip log to the requestor.
Click on the "save" button to make the addition permanent.
Admin Users
End users with Admin permissions have the ability to add and delete additional end users for a particular
domain. End users can be a person, or persons, who require or request access to a particular domain's
statistics. Additional end users will be able to see all Reports and Report Items, and will have access to
the Config options. However, end users without Admin permissions will not be able to add other end
users, nor will they be able to adjust particular stats settings.

Number of Rows To Display: Enter the default number of rows that will display in the report table.
Show Charts: Check this box to enable graphical charts associated with the statistical tables. You may
want to turn this option off if the end user has a slow Internet connection.
Resolve IPs: When viewing a report involving IP addresses, check this box to display any other
information associated with the IP, if available (e.g. computer name).
Auto Generate Reports: When a report item is first selected, by default a user must enter a date range

statistics using the date range specified in the "Report Date Range" setting. Even with this option

My Site Settings
Reporting priority gives the user the ability to choose the sensitivity with which the data is reported. A
setting closer to "Accuracy" will result a larger number of resulting rows, but will take some time to
process. A more "accurate" return of data does not necessarily mean that the data will be more
relevant. For example, a more accurate return of Top Search Engines would return many somewhat
unique or obscure Search Engines. A setting closer to "Speed" will result in a fewer number of rows and
a faster search results, and could return just as accurate results as the "Accuracy" setting, if not more so
since more obscure data is left alone.
Site Import Settings
A feature not found in any other log analysis package is the ability to have your site statistics processed
using your particular time zone. As the log files are based off of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) you have
the ability to reprocess the log files for your specific GMT zone. Simply select your time zone from the
dropdown box and click the "next" button. Changing your time zone may require a reprocessing of your
log files. Keep in mind that this will cause your statistics to become unavailable while reprocessing
occurs.
Another feature is the ability to filter out IP addresses, and have any views/visits/hits/etc. filtere d from
your resulting statistics. However, this, too, may require a reprocess of your log files.
To change your time zone and/or filter a specific IP address (or IP block) from your statistics, follow
these simple steps:
Select your time zone from the dropdown list and/or enter a specific IP address or IP block in the text
box (click the "add" button to make the IP(s) permanent).
Hit the "next" button.
You have two options to select: Do not re-process and Re-process statistics.
Do not re-process means that the changes you make will take effect from that moment forward, and will
not affect any past statistics. It will also not require a reprocessing of your log files, and will not cause
your statistics to become unavailable for any length of time.
Re-process statistics means that the changes you make will affect all statistics, both past and present,
for your domain. This requires a full reprocessing of your logs and will cause your statistics to become
unavailable for a period of time.
Make your selection and click the "next" button.
Depending on which selection you made in step 4 above, you will be presented with a screen telling you
what will happen when you click the "finish" button: either your stats will reprocess or they will not.

From here, the options applied to each web entry are "view", "info", "edit", "delete" and "manage".
If the task is to delete the site, simply click on the delete link and confirm it on the following page.
Please Note: Deleting a site from the Web Interface will not delete the Smarter log files that
SmarterStats generates unless you explicitly select the "Delete SmarterLog Files" check box. Original log
files will remain unchanged, except as deleted with the "Maximum standard log days" property of the
site. It is strongly recommended that you either back up the original logs prior to site deletion, or have
the customer download their log files prior to deletion.
When adding or deleting a site, or changing any information relating to a particular site, you only need
to do this through the Web Interface. The web service(s) will automatically adjust based on the time you
specify. This means that when you delete a site, the service will notice the deletion at the next interval.
No manual addition, deletion or editing of sites is required for the service(s).
Adding Sites to the Web Interface
To add a site to the Web Interface, log in as the administrator of the SmarterStats application (if you are
not already) and click on "Manage" in the menu. Select "Add Site", and the first page of the add sites
wizard will display.
Add a Site ID for the web site (e.g. 1. Site IDs must be integers greater than 0. If you do not use integers
for your Site IDs, you will need to create a lookup table in a database to convert your Site IDs to
integers) or click the "assign unused id" button.
In a distributed environment, the site may reside on a server other than the web interface. From the
drop down list, select which web server the site's original logs are on.
Enter the domain name into the domain name textbox (e.g. smartertools.com or yourDomain.com).

Select the method that the Web Interface will use to acquire the original log files: Local Path, UNC Path
or download from FTP server.
Local Path or UNC Path
Indicate the full path to where the log files reside on the web server. This is usually set during the
installation of the web site on the server. Full paths are required (e.g.
c:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 for a local path or
\\webservername\c$\inetpub\domainname\logs\ for a UNC path)
Set the auto deletion for the number of days that the original log files remain on the web server.

Select the log file format (W3C, NCSA, IIS). If you wish to use auto-detect, please be aware that it only
works on local log files, not FTP logs.
Select the maximum number of months you want the SmarterLog files to be stored. SmarterLog files are
in a compressed format, which allows you to store a wider date range of logs versus saving the standard
web server log files.
Enter the location where log files will be exported to. This option refers to where the log files will be
placed when the user asks to download the files from the SmarterStats application. A good rule of
thumb is to put the logs back into the root of that particular site (e.g. c:\inetpub\wwwroot).
Finally, enter the URL for the exported log files. This is the absolute link that is set up in order to allow
the user to retrieve the log file when the export is completed. Again, the full URL for that site should
suffice (e.g. http://www.smartertools.com).
Click on the "finish" button to make the addition permanent.
Managing Servers
The Manage Servers option gives you the ability to do just that: see a list of the servers the SmarterStats
service is installed on, the server ID, the server IP, and the ability to see the server info, edit the service
on a particular server, or delete the service from the server.

Editing Servers
There are 3 pieces of information on the Edit Server page: the Server ID (which is uneditable), the Server
IP, and the Server Name. The latter categories are editable to account for changes within an
organization's infrastructure. To make a change to any piece of information, simply make the change in
the appropriate textbox, and click the "Save" button.
Getting Server Information
The Server Information page displays a listing of the sites on that particular server, the Friendly Name
for the sites, and the Status of the log files for the sites. There are several basic status codes for sites
within the Web Interface. They take the form of "Site Status" ("Status" on server) (e.g. Running (Paused
on server)):

Reimport - The "Reimport" button will cause all log files associated with a particular domain to be
reimported, from the earliest log file to the latest. Please Note: All Smarter logs will be deleted and then
recreated from the original web server log files. If any of the original log files have been deleted, their
data will be lost upon reimport. We suggest only using this feature when directed to by SmarterTools
support.
Reprocess - The "Reprocess" button will cause all log file data to be reprocessed, but not reimported.
Send Email Reports - The "Send Email Reports" button will send all email reports that recorded an error
at their normal send time. This button will not send all email reports again, only those that were not
sent normally.
Refresh - This button will refresh the page and show any updated information.
Restart Service - This button will restart the service automatically.
Back - This button sends you back to the previous page.
There is also the ability to restart the SmarterStats service for that server should it become disabled or
stop running. the "Refresh" button simply refreshes the screen so an Admin is able to see where each
domain is in regards to whether it is InQueue or Processing.
Deleting a Server From the Web Interface
To Delete a server from the Web Interface, log in as the administrator of the SmarterStats application
and click on the "Admin" menu. Select "Manage Servers", and the main manage servers screen will
display. The options on this page include an "Add" button to add a server to the Web Interface, and a
"Send Email Reports" button that will send only those email reports that were not initially sent the night
before.
Select "Manage Servers" from the "Admin" menu.
The main manage servers screen will appear, displaying a list of all servers currently residing within the
Web Interface.
Find the server you want to delete, and click the "delete" link.
A message will appear confirming your decision to delete the server. Click the "OK" button.
As long as there were no sites inside the Web Interface that belong to the server you want to delete, the
deletion will proceed without generating an error. If there is even one site still associated with the
server you are trying to delete, SmarterStats will notify you of this. You will need to delete the site first,
then proceed with the server deletion.

Status Menu
The Status Menu gives you the ability to check on the service status for all servers on your Enterprise
running the SmarterStats Web Interface and/or Remote Service. Each server is broken down by server
name, server ID, the server status, the high log file size in MB, the low log file size in MB, the size of the
current log file (in MB) being processed, the Site ID of the website having the highest log file size, and
that site's name.
Server Status
The Server Status page is an essential tool for monitoring SmarterStats on any Enterprise. It provides
valuable information regarding each web server running the SmarterStats service, the status of the
server, and information pertaining to the sites that cause the highest usage of server resources for the
SmarterStats application. The Server Status page is broken down into the following columns:
Server Name - This is the common name for each web server running the SmarterStats service as it was
named during the time the server was added to the Web Interface.
Status - This is the status of the SmarterStats™ service on that particular web server. There are 2
possible status codes: Running and NA.
High/Current/Low - This highest amount of memory used, in MB, the current amount of memory being
used, and the lowest amount of memory used for that server.
High Site ID - This is the site ID of the domain that used the most memory on that server.
High Site Name - This is the name of the domain that used the most memory on that server.
Running Queries - The number of queries running on the server at that time.
Service Version Info
Service Version Info gives System Administrators an overview of the version of Remote Service running
on all web servers. If a red "Failed" line appears, that means that the service possibly is not installed on
that server, or there is a communication error with the service.
Server Name - The name of the server as it appears in the Web Interface.
Server ID - The ID of the server as it appears in the Web Interface.
Version # - The version of Remote Service that is running on that particular server.

SmarterStats Web Services
SmarterStats was built with custom configuration and automation in mind. In addition to being able to
customize the look and feel of SmarterStats, developers and/or System Administrators have the ability
to code to the SmarterStats application using several different web services. These web services allow
developers and/or System Administrators to automate a variety of different things: add sites to the Web
Interface on the fly, grab site-specific bandwidth usage for billing purposes, set details on a specific site
or server, update site information, test servers added to the Web Interface, and more.
To view the web services, and their corresponding functions, available to you, go to your default Web
Interface install location and append "services/services_page.asmx". Your particular SmarterStats
location can be the specific IP address of the Web Interface (e.g. if you installed SmarterStats with the
default installation you would use http://127.0.0.1:9999/services/SiteAdmin.asmx, etc. or a specific IP
address you assigned for the Web Interface if you custom-installed SmarterStats or moved SmarterStats
to a new web server) or a specific site name if you configured SmarterStats as an actual website within
IIS (e.g. smarterstats.yourdomain.com). Below you will find a brief explanation of the web services
available to you, along with the default installation paths to the specific web services details page.
Server Admin Web Service
(http://127.0.0.1:9999/services/serveradmin.asmx):
There are six (6) functions of the service available for customization. These services allow developers
and/or System Administrators to pull information relating to a server or servers from a custom page
using SOAP, an HTTP GET command, or an HTTP POST command (examples for each are provided as
well). The functions, and their corresponding properties, are:
GetServers - returns a list of all servers running SmarterStats Enterprise Edition .
GetGlobalDefaults - returns the global default settings for a specific server. These default settings
include server IP address, server status, default file, document and download extensions, and more.
PingServer - allows you to ping a specific server and see the results.
DeleteServer - allows you to delete a server from the Web Interface.
AddServer - allows you to add a server directly in to the Web Interface.
UpdateServer - allows you to change server configurations on the fly.
Site Admin Web Services
(http://127.0.0.1:9999/services/siteadmin.asmx):
There are nine (9) functions of the service available for customization. These services allow developers
and/or System Administrators to pull information relating to a particular site or sites from a custom
page using SOAP, an HTTP GET protocol, or an HTTP POST command (examples for each are provided as
well). These functions, and their corresponding properties, are:

UpdateSite - allows you to update information pertaining to a particular site that resides in the Web
Interface.
AddSiteWithFTP - Allows you to add a site with FTP logs directly in to the Web Interface.
GetSite - returns a single site that you specify and that is listed in the Web Interface.
Bandwidth Web Services
(http://127.0.0.1:9999/services/bandwidth.asmx):
There are two (2) functions of the service available for customization. These services allow developers
and/or System Administrators to pull information relating to bandwidth usage for a particular site or
server from a custom page using SOAP, an HTTP GET command, or an HTTP POST command (examples
for each are provided as well). These functions can be extremely useful when providing bandwidth
statistics to end users or for bandwidth monitoring and overage billing. The functions, and their
corresponding properties, are:
GetForSite - returns all bandwidth for a particular site.
GetForServer - returns all bandwidth for a particular server on a per-site basis.
Product Information Web Services (http://127.0.0.1:9999/services/productinfo.asmx):
There are four (4) functions of the service available for customization. These services allow developers
and/or System Administrators to pull information (e.g. licensing info) or set information (e.g. license
activation) relating to the product installed on the server from a custom page using SOAP, an HTTP GET
command, or an HTTP POST command (examples for each are provided as well). The functions, and their
corresponding properties, are:
ActivateLicenseKey - allows you to activate the license key purchased for your product.
GetLicenseInfo - returns information pertaining to the current product license.

End User Notes
The Main Menu Bar is exactly what you would expect: the main navigation menu bar for the entire stats
package. A User simply runs their mouse over a Main Menu Item to reveal a drop-down menu of Report
Item Headings, Standard Reports, Interactive Reports, or Configuration Options. This is a static menu
that will appear on every page of the SmarterStats package. Users with older browsers will see a popup
window rather than the dropdown.
The Website and Report Title Bar displays the current website stats are displayed for, as well as the
name of the current report being viewed.
The Date Selection Bar is where you select the start date, the end date and the number of rows to
display for each and every report you request.
To select a specific day for your report start date, click the down arrow next to the "Date From" text box.
As you can see, a calendar selection appears, and you can select any day from any month you wish as
your start date.
To select a specific day for your report end date, click the down arrow next to the "to" text box. As you
can see, a calendar selection appears, and you can select any day from any month you wish as your end
date.
To select the number of rows you want to display for every report, click the down arrow beside the
"Rows" text box. You can leave the setting to "Default", which is a number set by the user in "My
Settings", or choose 10, 25, 50, 100, or any other option. This setting crosses all reports for the duration
of your session.
Custom Reports
Upon initial entry to SmarterStats there will not be any report items showing in the Custom Reports
dropdown menu. However, after a user creates a Custom Report, they will appear in this column for
easy access. Custom Reports allow end users to select any number of Report Items for inclusion in a full
Report of their own design.
In this section, any User can create, edit or delete a Custom Report. A custom report is similar to a
Standard Report, except Custom Reports grants the User the flexibility of adding any report items that
would be most beneficial to them. After a Custom Report is created, it will show up in the Custom
Reports menu, as well as the Email Reports menu, immediately.
To create a Custom Report:
Click on the "add" button.
Type a name for your custom report. Make sure the name is as descriptive as possible.

Resolve IPs: When viewing a report involving IP addresses, check this box to display any other
information associated with the IP, if available (e.g. computer name).
Auto Generate Reports: When a report item is first selected, by default a user must enter a date range
before the information is displayed. Check this box to skip that step and immediately display the
statistics using the date range specified in the "Report Date Range" setting. Even with this option
enabled, a user can change the report date range after the report is displayed.
My Site Settings
The email report settings can be used as an alternate to the server settings. These settings are not
necessarily required for users to receive email reports.
Email Reports SMTP Server: This is the mail server that will be used to send your email reports from.
Email Reports From Address: This is the email address the reports will be sent from.
Reporting Priority: gives the user the ability to choose the sensitivity with which the data is reported. A
setting closer to "Accuracy" will result a larger number of resulting rows, but will take some time to
Changing your time zone may require a reprocessing of your
log files. Keep in mind that this will cause your statistics to become unavailable while reprocessing
occurs.
Another feature is the ability to filter out IP addresses, and have any views/visits/hits/etc. filtered from
the your resulting statistics. However, this, too, may require a reprocess of your log files.
If you site passes session variables in the URL separated with a semicolon, check the "Strip URL Items
after semicolon" box
If you have query string variables in your site that have near random values (page refresh randomizers,
session IDs, etc), add the names of the query variables to the "Query String Items to Ignore" box,
separated with commas. If you enable this option, the system will start ignoring the value of those
variables when calculating page hits. The hits will still be registered, but without that variable. Please
note that this option is a pre-filter, meaning that once you enable it, you cannot get the values of those
variables back unless you still retain the original logs.

Click the "finish" button to make your changes permanent.
**Note that exclusions may not apply to any of the reports under the 'Paths Through Site' area.
Information reported would be incorrect and misleading if exclusions were applied.
My Custom Reports
In this section, any User can create, edit or delete a Custom Report. A custom report is similar to a
Standard Report, except Custom Reports grants the User the flexibility of adding any report items that
would be most beneficial to them. After a Custom Report is created, it will show up in the Custom
Reports menu, as well as the Email Reports menu, immediately.
To create a Custom Report:
Click on the "add" button.
Type a name for your custom report. Make sure the name is as descriptive as possi ble.
Select a Report Item you want included from the list on left.
Click the ">>" button to add the Report Item to your Custom List.
If you add a Report Item, but decide you want to remove it later, select the Report Item from the list on
the right, then click the "<<" button to remove it.

After you have selected all of the Report Items you want included in your Custom Report, click the
"save" button.
The newly created Report will appear immediately under the "Custom Reports" Menu, as well as in the
"My Email Reports" Menu item.
You can edit or delete a Custom Report at any time. Changes will take effect immediately and
automatically.
My Email Reports
My Email Reports gives each User the ability to schedule daily, weekly or monthly reports and have
them emailed to up to three (3) different email addresses. Weekly Email Reports are sent every Monday
morning, and Monthly Email Reports are sent on the first day of every month (information in the
Monthly Reports would therefore be for the month previous). Any Standard or Custom Report is able to
be sent via email.
Another feature is the ability to send table data only via email, eliminating the image files (charts) that
normally appear for each report/report item. This is especially beneficial for people sending email
reports to free email services (like MSN or Yahoo!), or for people accessing mail via a dialup connection.
To create an email report:
Input up to three (3) different email addresses.
You choose the report you want emailed by selecting the frequency with which you want the report
emailed. Any report can be emailed Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or any combination of the three.
After you have everything set, click on the "save" button.
Daily Reports will be sent the following day, weekly Reports will be sent the following Monday, and
Monthly Reports will be sent on the first day of the following Month.
My Global Filters
For more information on Filters, see How Filters Work.
Users have the ability to create Global Filters, or filters that will affect every Report Item that contains
the the Field that is being filtered. Similar to Report Item Filters, Global Filters can be created by any
User, and you can create an unlimited number of Global Filters. When you first access the Global Filters
page, a list will appear showing only the Global Filters you have set up. In order to see all of the Filters
that are in use, click the "view all filters" button. This will list all of your Global and Report Item Filters.
NOTE: Global Filters are global in the sense that they are applied to all Report Items that they affect, but
they are user-specific (meaning, a global filter will only affect the displayed Report Items for that user,
not a different user for the same domain).
To create a Global Filter:

starting with the word "deals" (e.g. dealing, dealer, etc.) would be excluded.
Ends - the data excluded will "end with" the data input. For example, by inputting "deal", anything
ending with the word "deals" (e.g. great deal, huge deal, etc.) would be excluded.
Contains - the data excluded would "contain" the data input. For example, by inputting "deal", anything
containing the word "deal", regardless of where the word appears, would be excluded.
Finally, enter the word you want to have filtered from all Report Items.

contained in the Report Item selected), Filter type, and Filter (the data you want excluded, NOT case

To delete a filter:
Select the Report Item the filter was created for.
Select the filter.
Click the "delete" button.
How filters work:
Global Filters and Report Item Filters are very similar in that they only remove items from results that
are returned by a Report Item (the information that is displayed when you view a Report Item). For
example, if you filter an IP from the Top IP's by Hits Report Item, the filter does not remove all the
statical data in all report items generated by that IP, just the filtered IP itself from the list of IP’s that
display when you view that Report Item. This allows you to view only the results you want to, but does
not affect the underlying statistics. The actual log files themselves are not being filtered nor is the
statistical data itself changed for any other Report Item.
How to Remove Specific Directories From Report Items
Above is an appended example of a Report Item, Top Pages by Views/Visits, without a filter applied.
Looking at the results that are returned, you'll notice that the entire path of the page is listed (e.g.
/products/smarterstatsProfessional/overview.htm). Since the entire path to that page shows up, in
order to remove an entire directory from the results returned, you would add a page filter removing
that specific directory from your results. In the example below, the folder "products" was added as a
page filter on the Top Pages by Views/Visits Report Item. Please notice the results:
Page
49
[SMARTERSTATS 1.X - 2.X DOCUMENTATION]
LEGACY PRODUCT
You'll see that the pages contained in the /Products/ folder have now been removed from the results
that are returned. Therefore, in order to remove a directory from results returned by a Report Item, add
a page filter for the highest Parent folder containing all pages you want removed.
The ability to filter log data and reproccess the actual statistical data is available to SmarterStats users.
This capability is unique to the SmarterStats product as it has the ability to reprocess statistical
information based off of the compressed SmarterLogs versus other products that must query and
reprocess actual server log files, which are 900% larger than the SmarterLogs. The ability to query
smaller log files makes the reprocessing of statistical data much, much faster.

My Settings
This section will allow a user to make some basic changes to their settings. The user’s first name and last
name can be changed along with the default report date range and the number of default rows that will
display on the reports in the site.
User Name - When a User is initially set up by an Admin, they are given a User Name. This is what
displays in this spot, and it cannot be changed by a user.
Password - This is the password assigned to the User by an Admin. It cannot be changed.
First Name - This is the first name of the user displayed.
Last Name - This is the last name of the user displayed.
Security Level - This will read "Admin" for users with Admin permissions, or "User" for standard user
permissions.
Default Report Date Range - This is the default date range to display for each Report Item for this user.
Default # of Rows to Display - This is the default number of rows to display for each Report Item for this
user.
Show Charts - When this box is checked, all Report Item charts will display for this user. It is checked by
default. When this box is unchecked, all Report Items will display tables only, and no graphics.
Resolve IPs - When this box is checked, all Visitor IP Addresses will be resolved back to their hosts. This
box is unchecked by default. When checked, this feature can lengthen the time it takes for all visitor
Report Items to display. Also by default, only the top 100 resolved IP addresses will display, regardless of
what the default number of rows to display is set to.
Auto Generate Reports - When this box is checked, reports will be automatically generated each time
you choose one from the menu. Enabling this option will make navigating through the site slower, but
will reduce the amount of clicking you have to do to see reports.

Change My Password
This configuration option is fairly self-explanatory. Enter the old password, the new password, and the
new password again. Confirm the change, and the password will be changed, and become effective,

Export My Logs
This page will allow you to export your processed log files. The resulting file will be compressed and
contain daily logs conforming to the date range you specify.
Notes:
This page may take a very long time to process depending on the amount of data in your site's log files.
You are limited to selecting no more than 31 days per export. Logs can be exported in any log file
format, regardless of the original web server that initially created the log files. This means that, even if
your site is hosted on a Windows server running IIS, you will be able to export your log files in an Apache
format. When you are done, you will have the opportunity to download your file.
Cookies are not maintained in SmarterLogs; if this information is needed by the end user, they will need
to maintain a backup of the original log files. SmarterLogs does keep the first cookie used in a session,
but does not keep the subsequent cookies.
To export your logs:
Select the Start Date, or the first date you want included in your exported logs.
Select the End Date, or the last date you want included in your exported logs (this date can be no more
than 30 days from your start date).
Select log file format.
Click on the "Begin Export" button.
After the export is completed, you will be presented with a link that will allow you to download the
exported log files. The downloadable file will be in a compressed, or "zipped" format, so be sure you
have the ability to uncompress the file.

Glossary
Below is an alphabetized list of the various terms and phrases used in describing a log analysis package.
authenticated visitor - a visitor who successfully logs in to a website.
bandwidth/transfer - Whenever a visitor hits a page on your site, a certain amount of transfer occurs
(images, stylesheets, the page itself, etc.). This transfer uses a certain amount of bandwidth, equal to
the entire size of the page viewed, including all images, style sheets, etc. attached to that page.
directory - A collection of folders that contain files, regardless of their file extension, associated with a
website.
document - A file that is readable from a web browser using either the browser itself or a third-party
plug-in or product. By default, SmarterStats considers the following extensions to be "documents":
.chm, .doc, .rtf, .pdf, .txt, .xml, .xls, and .ps
downloads - A file that is able to be downloaded, or saved, to a visitor's local machine. Generally,
downloads are specified as such by the site owner, and given either freel y or charged on a per-download
basis. By default, SmarterStats considers the following extensions to be "downloads": .asf, .avi, .doc,
.exe, .gzip, .mp2, .mp3, .mpeg, .mpg, .msi, .msp, .qt, .qtm, .ra, .rar, .swf, .tar.bx, .tar.bz2, .tar.gz, .wma,
.wmf, .wpd, .zip
dynamic pages - Pages built using a variety of different scripting environments and/or scripting
languages. Generally, any page with an extension other than .htm or .html. By default, SmarterStats
considers the following extensions to be "dynamic pages": .asp, .aspx, .cfc, .cfm, .cfml, .cfmx, .cgi, .dll,
.jhtm, .jhtml, .jsp, .jws, .mv, .mht, .mhtml, .php, .php3, .phtml, .pl, .shtm, .shtml, .stm, .wml, .xdl, .xhtml,
.xml
entry page - The page a person coming to your site initially lands on.
exit page - The page a visitor leaving your site was on prior to moving to a differnt website.
files - Any and all file extensions that were viewed, visited, hit or downloaded from a particular website.
file types - Any and all file extensions.
hits - A hit is registered every time a file that resides on a page or within a directory is requested by the
web server. The type of file is irrelevant. Hits generated as a result of an error (either a 400 or 500 level
error) are not counted as actual hits to your site, and are kept separate from successful hits.
images - An image file contained within a web page, or referenced by a web page. By default,
SmarterStats considers the following extensions to be "images": .bmp, .cdr, .cgm, .dip, .eps, .gif, .img,
.jas, .jpeg, .jpg, .pcx, .tif, .tiff, .png, .pic, .psd, .ico

IP - Internet Protocol address of a domain name. The IP address is the actual, physical address of the
domain name. Therefore, you can access a website by entering either the domain name or the IP
address for the domain.
New * : A new visit/view/etc. is a instance that only occurs the first time that event transpires. For
example: If Joe were to visit a website on Monday, his visit would show up, only as a new visit for
Monday, regardless of how long the report period is run for.
pages - The basic building blocks of any website. A website generally contains a collection of different
pages that are accessible and viewable via a web browser. By default, SmarterStats considers the
following extensions to be "pages": .asp, .aspx, .cfc, .cfm, .cfmx, .cfml, .cgi, .htm, .html, .ida, .idc, .jhtm,
.jhtml, .jsp, .jws, .mht, .mhtml, .mv, .php, .php3, .phtm, .phtml, .pl, .shtm, .shtml, .stm, .wml, .xdl, .xhtml,
.xml
path - As in "Paths Through Site"; when a visitor moves from page to page within a site, they follow, or
generate, a specific path for their movement. For example, a visitor enters your site via the Default.html
page, clicks on a link to Product.html, then proceeds to Order.html, and they finally leave via
Thank_you.html. Therefore, the path for this visit would look like:
default.html/product.html/order.html/thank_you.html.
referral - As used in "top referring URL" or "Top Referring Site"; the site name, IP address and/or URL of
the place a visitor was prior to visiting your website.
spiders/robots - In order for your website to be included in a Search Engine, it first has to be visited and
read (commonly referred to as "indexed") by the Search Engine. Search Engines use specially created
software (called "robots" or "spiders") to traverse the internet and index web pages.
Unique * : A unique visit/view/etc. is a instance that only occurs the first time that event transpires
during the report period. For example: If Joe were to visit a website on Monday and on Wednes day, his
visit would show up as a unique visit, for both days, when a daily report is run.
user agents - A "user agent" is the raw information relating to the visitor connecting to your site.
Whenever someone, or some thing, connects to your website, they are passing information pertaining
to the agent used to connect to your site. While most see Internet Explorer as the method of
connection, a web server sees something like: mozilla/4.0 (compatible; msie 6.0; windows nt 5.0).
views - A view is captured when the web server sends a page, regardless of what is on the page, to the
browser window. Views generated as a result of an error (either a 400 or 500 level error) are not
counted as actual views for your site, and are kept separate from successful views.
visits - A visit occurs when someone comes to a site, regardless of whether they request one, ten or a
hundred pages. A visit, therefore, can account for any number of views. Visits generated as a result of an
error (either a 400 or 500 level error) are not counted as actual visits for your site, and are kept separate
from successful visits. In addition, different report items track visits differently. Some record a visit on

the day the visit started and some record a visit on the day the visit ended. For this reason, visit totals

Appendix A: Log File Compression Explained
SmarterStats was developed for all manner of users, from the webmaster with one or two sites, to large
scale enterprises with 10,000 sites or more. With this in mind, SmarterStats incorporates a compression
scheme that reduces the amount of raw log files stored on a web server. The benefits of this
architecture are practically limitless:
Smaller log files mean less disk space required for log file storage.
Smaller log files means less backup space required for backing up log files and faster backup schedules.
Smaller log files mean shorter download times for clients.
Smaller log files mean faster data queries and faster display times.
Smaller disk space requirements means less initial investment in hardware.
Faster backup schedules means less overhead for monitoring backups.
And the list goes on and on.
In a nutshell, SmarterStats takes traditional web server log files and segregates redundant data, turning
log file data into a basic relational database. This step, in and of itself, can reduce log file sizes up to
80%. Additionally, SmarterStats compresses the already compressed SmarterLogs even further, adding
another 5-10% reduction in the size of the log files. All together, SmarterStats can reduce log files
upwards of 85% of their original size.

Appendix B: Report Item Reference
Report Items are the backbone of the SmarterStats Professional Edition application, and every statistic
taken from your log files (e.g. Top Paths) is considered a Report Item. Many Report Items make up a
single Report. For example, a "Webmaster Report" would have a "Top Path" report item, a "Top Entry
Pages" report item, etc.
SmarterStats Professional Edition provides a Report Item drop down menu so end-users know all the
Report Items that are available for use.
Report Categories are as follows:

Pages by Views/Hits/Visits
These Report Items display the most basic and fundamental information regarding the traffic visiting a
particular website. While each Report Item is listed as the "Top" statistic, SmarterStats allows you to
display all of the information pertaining to that statistic. When this happens, the "Top" reference is
regarding the default way the information is displayed, which is from the most popular to the least
popular, or from "Top" down.
Top Pages by Views/Visits
Top Pages by Views/Visits displays the top accessed pages in descending order by views. A vie w is
captured when the web server sends a page, regardless of what is on the page, to the browser window.
A visit occurs when someone comes to a site, regardless of whether they request one, ten or a hundred
pages. Therefore one visit can create one view, twenty views or one hundred views, depending on how
many pages the "visitor" views.
By default, SmarterStats considers the following extensions to be "pages":
.asp, .aspx, .cfc, .cfm, .cfmx, .cfml, .cgi, .htm, .html, .ida, .ida, .jhtm, .jhtml, .jsp, .jws, .mht, .mhtml, .mv,

Pages by Bandwidth
These Report Items display information regarding the bandwidth usage for a particular domain. Most
web hosts limit a site's monthly bandwidth usage, so these reports can assist a site owner, web host, or
CEO take stock of the amount of bandwidth used. Webmasters can use these Report Items to
troubleshoot areas that may cause particular concern or to get an idea of files that require a little

Top Accessed File Types by Bandwidth
This is a list of the top accessed file types (also known as top file extensions ), by bandwidth, in
descending order.
Paths through Site
These Report Items display information regarding the entry and exit behaviour of visitors to your site, as
well as pathing information relating to their surfing habits once they access your site. These Report
Items are useful for analyzing how visitors enter or exit your site, especially if there is a marketing or
advertising campaign that targets a particular page, image file or path.
Top Entry Files
When a visitor enters the site, the file (regardless of file extension) they land on is referred to as the Top
Entry File. Depending on the optimization of the site, or the scripting used, any file can be the first file
that loads. This is why, many times, image files are listed as the top entry files, as there are various
scripts that enable image files to load into a browser prior to an actual page displaying. This list is in
descending order by the number of visits the file received upon entry to the site.
Top Entry Pages
When a visitor enters the web site, the page they land on is registered here. This list is in descending
order by visits. By default, SmarterStats considers the following extensions to be “pages”:
.asp, .aspx, .cfc, .cfm, .cfmx, .cfml, .cgi, .htm, .html, .ida, .idc, .jhtm, .jhtml, .jsp, .jws, .mht, .mhtml, .mv,
.php, .php3, .phtm, .phtml, .pl, .shtm, .shtml, .stm, .wml, .xdl, .xhtml, .xml
Top Exit Pages
When a visitor exits the web site, the page they are on when they exit is registered here. This list is in
descending order by the number of times that page was exited from. By default, SmarterStats considers
the following extensions to be “pages”:
.asp, .aspx, .cfc, .cfm, .cfmx, .cfml, .cgi, .htm, .html, .ida, .idc, .jhtm, .jhtml, .jsp, .jws, .mht, .mhtml, .mv,
.php, .php3, .phtm, .phtml, .pl, .shtm, .shtml, .stm, .wml, .xdl, .xhtml, .xml
Top Paths
When a user moves from page to page within a site, they follow, or generate, a specific path for their
movement. For example, a visitor enters your site via the Default.html page, clicks on a link to
Page

Product.html, then proceeds to Order.html, and they finally leave via Thank_you.html. Therefore, the
path for this visit would look like: default.html/product.html/order.html/thank_you.html. The top paths
are listed in descending order by visits.
Visitor Information
These Report Items display information regarding the visitors to your site, specifically relating to the IP
addresses (and the resolved IP's, if that option is selected) of those visitors. A user can view the IP
addresses based on the number of views each IP generates, the number of hits an IP generates (which
can be useful if you suspect image grabbing), and the amount of bandwidth used by each visitor IP.
Recent visitor data is available as well, which shows pertinent information relating to the visitors
browsing a site within the last reporting period.
Top IP's by Views/Visits
When a user enters a website, their Internet Protocol Address (IP) gets captured by a web server in your
site's log file. The IPs listed here are in descending order based on the number of views generated by the
IP.
If users wish to see a resolution of the IP addresses listed, there is an option in "My Settings" under the
"Config" menu that will automatically resolve all IP adresses in their log files. However, IP resolution can
have a drastic effect on the speed with which Visitor Information Report Items display versus leaving
this option unchecked.
Top IP's by Hits
When a user enters a website, their Internet Protocol Address (IP) gets captured by a web server in your
site's log file. Every time a specific IP makes a resource request from the web server, re gardless of the
file type requested, a "hit" is generated. The IPs listed here are in descending order based on the
number of hits generated by the IP.
Top IP's by Bandwidth
When a user enters a website, their Internet Protocol Address (IP) gets captured by a web server in your
site's log file. Every time a specific IP makes a resource request from the web server, regardless of the
file type requested, a certain amount of bandwidth is used for those resources to be transferred from
the web server to the browser making the request. The IPs listed here are in descending order based on
the amount of bandwidth used by the IP.
If users wish to see a resolution of the IP addresses listed, there is an option in "My Settings" under the
"Config" menu that will automatically resolve all IP adresses in their log files. However, IP resolution can
have a drastic effect on the speed with which Visitor Information Report Items display versus leaving

Top Views by Number of Visits
This report item displays the number of views versus the number of visits made. If you visit a site
multiple times, regardless of the timeframe between visits, your IP is still counted only once, or as a
single "visit". However, the number of different pages you access across your various visits are counted
individually as different "views". Therefore, one visit can account for one, ten or a thousand different
views. As way of explanation, say you have 200 visits that generate 50 views. This means that 200
different IPs have all viewed 50 pages each.
Top Authenticated Visitors
An authenticated visitor is a person who has successfully logged into the site. This report displays the
top number of people who have successfully logged into the site based on their number of visits.
Recent Visitor Stats
This report item shows information on the most recent visitors to a website (based on a 15 minute
period). Information available pertains to the first hit for that visitor, the last logged hit for the visitor,
and some basic information on their number of hits, views, and bandwidth usage.
Recent Visitor Details
This report item shows detailed information on the most recent visitors to a website (based on a 15
minute period). Information available pertains to the last hit logged for the visitor and information
about their path through the site, the browser they were using, and the platform used.
Referral Information
These Report Items display information regarding where visitors to a site were prior to entering a
particular site. These Report Items can be especially useful for analyzing any banner or showcase
advertising that is being run, or for seeking potential leads when looking for starting a banner or link
advertising campaign or exchange.
Top Referring Sites
Any time a visitor comes to your site, chances are they came from somewhere else. The site that they
come from, therefore, is called the "referring site". This report shows you the domain name or IP
address that referred a visitor to your site, in descending order, based on the number of times that
domain name or IP address was the referrer.
One thing to note is that every time someone navigates within your site your own site is considered a
referrer. Therefore, you will see your own site listed as a referring site, and may even see your own site
as the top referring site.
Occasionally, you may see a "No Referrer" listed. If a person types your web site address, or the URL to
any particular page within your web site, directly into their browser's address bar, or if your site is their
homepage when they open the browser, there will not be a referral for that visit because the visitor is
not coming from someplace prior to hitting your site, they are coming directly to your site. There are
also some scripts that can be used to block referral information when a visitor navigates from one web
site to another.

Top Referring URLs
Any time a visitor comes to your site, chances are they came from somewhere el se. The URL of the site
that they came from, therefore, is called the "referring URL". This report shows you the full URL that
referred a visitor to your site, in descending order, based on the number of times that URL was the
referrer.
One thing to note is that every time someone navigates within your site the page they were on prior to
clicking on a link is considered a referring URL. Therefore, you will see your own URL listed as a referring
URL, and may even see your own URL as the top referring URL.
Geographic Information
These reports display the information regarding the traffic visiting a particular website from the client's
location around the world. Beyond the information for the world, there are breakdowns for all
countries. You can view reports for all geographic areas broken down by View, Visits, Hits, and
Bandwidth.

This is a general list of all browsers that were used by visitors to your website.
Top Netscape Browsers
This is a list of the versions of Netscape browsers that were used by visitors to your website. The list is in
descending order based on the popularity of the version number.
Top Microsoft Browsers
This is a list of the versions of Microsoft browsers that were used by visitors to your website. The list is in
descending order based on the popularity of the version number.
Top Platforms
This is a list of the operating systems that were used by visitors to your website. The list is in descending
order based on the popularity of the operating system.
Top User Agents
A "user agent" is the raw information relating to the visitor connecting to your site. Whenever someone,
or something, connects to your website, they are passing information pertaining to the agent used to
connect to your site. While most see Internet Explorer as the method of connection, a web server sees
something like: mozilla/4.0 (compatible; msie 6.0; windows nt 5.0). This is the user agent. Web
browsers, search engine spiders and robots, and various website monitoring tools all have spe cific user
agents.
Top Visiting Spiders
In order for your website to be included in a Search Engine, it first has to be visited and read (commonly
referred to as "indexed") by the Search Engine. Search Engines use specially created software (called
"robots" or "spiders") to traverse the internet and index web pages. Each spider has its own unique User
Agent. This report lists the various Search Engine spiders that have visited, and indexed, your website,
based on the number of visits the spider has made.
Server Responses
These Report Items display information regarding the various errors that can be returned by incorrect
links, server errors, redirects coded into a site, and others. What users must realize is that just because a
site generates errors it does not necessarily mean that there is a problem with a site or with the
server/host the site is on. For example, if someone mistypes a URL to a page within a website, a 404
error is generated. This is neither the developer's fault nor is it a server/host error.
Top Redirects
A redirect is simply a forward from another location. There are various types of redirects, commonly
known as HTTP Redirect Status Codes (3XX), and they generally indicate that action needs to be taken,
normally automatically, in order for a request by a browser to be fulfilled:
301 Moved: represents a permanent change of the URI requested.
302 Found: represents that the data requested actually resides at a different URL, and the browser is
redirected automatically.

303 Method: similar to the 302, except that a different method, other than GET, may be used to find the
different URL.
304 Not Modified: Basically, if you request a page based on a set of conditions, and the page does not
meet those conditions, then the page is not returned and a 304 response is received.
Top Client Errors
There are various types of client errors, commonly known as HTTP Status Codes (4XX), and they
generally indicate that an error has occurred on the client side of a request:
400 Bad Request: bad syntax used for the request.
401 Unauthorized: basically, you are unauthorized to complete the request made.
402 PaymentRequired: there is a charging scheme in place that is not satisfied.
403 Forbidden: you are forbidden from completing the request, regardless of authorization used.
404 Not Found: absolutely, the most common client error. The page requested can't be found on the
server.
Top Page Not Found (404 errors)

server.
Top Server Errors
There are various types of server errors, commonly known as HTTP Status Codes (5XX), and they
generally indicate that an error has occurred on the server, but the server is aware of the problem:
500 Internal Error: the server encountered an unexpected condition that prevents if from fulfilling the
request.
501 Not Implemented: the server does not support the request made.
502 Service Temporarily Overloaded: the server can not process the request due to a high load.

Appendix C: Standard Reports
Below is a breakdown of each Standard Report:
Search Engine Optimization Report
The Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Report contains report items relevant to analyzing and
determining a sites’ presence and prominence on any search engine. Using this report, a Search Engine
Specialist can see which words or phrases most people are using to find a website, and then be able to
optimize the website to target those words or phrases, or others that they feel are more relevant, but
receive less attention. Also, by being able to gauge which Search Engines are being used, the Specialist
can concentrate their efforts on any one, or group, of engines.
Marketing Report
The marketing report is a useful tool for an individual in marketing to make informed decisions about
search engine marketing campaigns, as well as see the impact a banner advertising or showcase
advertising campaign on website traffic and/or sales. The individual will be able to see what search
engines give the most referring traffic, and what keywords and phrases are pointing users to their site.
They will also be able to target specific entry pages in their advertising campaigns, and judge which
campaigns are most effective, or even compare the statistics returned by SmarterStats with the
statistics given by the sites featuring the advertising.
Webmaster Report
The webmaster report will give the webmaster a look at the browsers and platforms connecting to the
site, along with any errors (404, 500, etc.) that may happen. Additionally, the top documents and
downloads by views/visits and top entry pages will be displayed. The webmaster can then target obvious
or potential trouble spots on a site, optimize pages and/or graphics, or work in cooperation with a
Search Engine or Marketing specialist to help drive traffic to particular pages.
Chief Executive Officer Report
The chief executive officer report is designed to give the CEO an overview look at the website statistics
as well as the reports that are being run, and used, by the other employees in their organization (SEO,
marketing, and webmaster).
Site Activity Report
The site activity report is a collection of report items designed to give you a snapshot of the activity on
your website. The subjects touched on include various views and visits, bandwidth, entry and exit pages,
browsers, platforms, IP information, and visitor details to name a few.
Site Usage Report
The site usage report is exclusively a bandwidth report designed to give the user a complete and
thorough look at bandwidth usage from every angle. Using this report, a site owner can see what files
are responsible for the highest bandwidth usage and act accordingly (optimize, etc.).

contained within their website and see the number of times a person visited the site prior to reaching
and viewing the page selected. The report itself shows the IP address of the visitor, the initial Entry Page
for that visitor before they viewed the page selected, the number of visits before the page selected was
viewed, and the percentage.
Top Query Items by Page
The Top Query Items by Page Interactive Report allows you to view information pertaining to the various
query strings that are passed by a particular page of your website.
A typical example is the SmarterStats Professional Edition Help system. Whenever anyone clicks on the
"Help" graphic or a "What is this?" link within a specific Report Item, a query string is passed from the
SmarterStats application to the SmarterTools website. This query string relates to the particular page or
