Just like Brian Taylor would say on Channel 7 WOW WEE WHAT A GAME! I really don’t know where to start
here, I could write a novel on what happened in this game but some parents already think I say too much. I’
m so proud of what the boys did and the result they achieved. Even if the boys lost I would have the same
thoughts however 2 points makes a huge difference in individual player appreciation. They (we) have
worked so hard this season (from the end of Jan) and totally deserve some reward for effort. If I wasn’t
such a hard old footballer myself I may have even shed a tear listening to the boys sing the club song with
so much passion and enthusiasm.
With the ground wet and heavy just like last week, once again I thought we were in with a chance of
causing an upset. Due to several injuries and absentees we were left to field 18 players with an injured
Riley Stewart sitting on the bench for emergencies only and thankfully he was not required. When the first
quarter got underway we managed to get the first goal on the board which seemed to give us some belief
that just maybe! It was a very even quarter and with our different centre structure implemented for the first
time this year things looked to work a bit better. Score Redcliffe 2.1.13 Morningside 2.1.13
The second quarter was dour struggle and we played some really good football in patches. We managed to
play some of that football we do at training with the run and carry at times looking very good in heavy
conditions. What was so impressive in this quarter was the defensive pressure at both ends of the ground
and restricting Morningside to one very late goal which was a little disappointing for all the players. Score
Redcliffe 4.1.25 Morningside 3.3.21
With a half time lead of 4 points the boys came into the huddle on a massive high and I could see they
knew they had a chance. We had lead at halftime earlier in the season against Wilston Grange to end up
going down so I knew there was still a lot of work to be done. I could just feel a different attitude and
determination within the team and this game was not going to be lost without a fight. I had to stop the boys
doing the O’l 1, 2, 3 TIGER chant as they were keen to get out there before the umpires were on the field
(great sign). Maybe they just wanted to get away from me. Morningside did win the quarter and take the
lead at the final change but it seemed they had a slight wind at there back that we would have in the last
term. Score Redcliffe 6.1.37 to Morningside 6.5.41
Final quarter underway and down by 4 points it was in the hands of the boys to steal this one. I expressed
to them that IF Morningside kicked the first goal not to worry about it and just keep going and get the next
one. This is exactly what happened when they scored the goal we did lift and the pressure mounted. When
we hit the front about halfway through the quarter it was game on with both sides missing opportunities to
score goals under intense pressure. I more often than not time each quarter myself and I spent more time
watching my watch than the game in the end. When that siren sounded and we were in front the crowd
erupted showing the support that comes along each week. WINNING Score Redcliffe 8.3.51 to Morningside
7.7.49
One of the most pleasing things in the game was the composure and confidence in defending the last 5
minutes of the game. Some of the players may not be so happy about playing well in positions that they
“don’t like” but if it works I’m sure they will be happy just winning. I named a side in their positions at the
start of the game and would you believe I did not make one change for the entire game other than the
midfield rotations, panic did not set in and as they say if it isn’t broke don’t fix it. The problem now is I have
seen what they can do so if I don’t see it this weekend questions will be asked why?
Special thanks to Cooper Archer who I called up late on Saturday night to play for us due to absentees. I’m
sure he enjoyed the game and the song after a good contribution.
Fantastic stuff all round and great entertainment for everyone on a miserable cold Sunday afternoon!
NOW DO WE BELIEVE IN OURSELVES?
Best Players: Impossible to name any individuals. All played really well and a great team effort.
Goals: Marcus Lewis, Ryan O’Shea and Dominic Paino 2, Jamie Menheere and Connor Bloss 1.
I would personally and I’m sure the whole club would like to congratulate the three players that made the
final squad for the Northern Raiders. Ryan O’Shea, Dominic Paino and Connor Bloss have put in a huge
effort this season and deserve every reward they get. Great stuff you have made us all very proud.
Thanks
Wayne
