BRRRRR...IT’S COLD!!
Morning Entry during Extreme Cold Weather
During extreme cold weather, students will be invited into the school building at 8:30 am. We ask that you do not
drop your child(ren) off before that time as there is no supervision available for students. While we understand
that parents want to minimize exposure to the cold temperatures, we ask that regular routines for drop off and
pick up are still followed for the safety of our students and staff.
Please continue to use the Kiss N’ Ride in a safe manner and do not have your child(ren) walk across the school
parking lot. Also, please do not park your car in the bus route as this is a “no-stopping” zone. Parents are asked to
park at the church and walk their child (ren) to school. We need to ensure that students are safe getting on and
off the bus, as well as continue the flow of traffic. Thank you for your help in this matter.
DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER
This is a reminder that children in Grades 1 to 6 spend two 15 minute recess periods and
a 30 minute lunch recess outdoors (except on extremely cold days or during stormy
weather). Our Kindergarten children also spend playtime outdoors. Outdoor exercise
and fresh air are important to healthy child development.
Please ensure that your child is dressed warmly enough, with hat, mittens and snow
pants, to enjoy this outdoor time. If children are playing on the field they must
have snow pants. Children who are well enough to be at school participate in
recess.
In cases of extreme cold, when the temperature is –20 degrees Celsius or colder, with
or without the wind chill, we reduce the amount of time students spend outdoors. When
the temperature is -25 degrees Celsius or colder, with or without wind chill, students remain indoors.
NEWS FROM MRS. WINTERS IN THE MUSIC ROOM
The recorder unit begins in February. Students in grades 3-6 will be learning to read the musical staff by playing a
recorder. A recorder is from the woodwind family and a fantastic beginner instrument.
Students must bring their recorder to each and every music class. There is a storage bin for each grade in the
music room if students would like to keep his/her instrument at school. The recorder must be kept in its own case
with the student's name clearly marked on the outside. Students who have perfect recorder attendance will earn a
special prize at the end of the unit! Good Luck!
Recorders can be cleaned in warm, soapy water and dried overnight.
Plowman's Park Choir and Chamber Choir is starting up again in February. Chamber Choir rehearses Mondays from
12:30-1:00 pm and Plowman's Choir on Wednesdays from 12:30-1:00 pm.
LIBRARY NEWS
February promises to be a busy month for reading all about Groundhog Day on February 2nd, The Hundredth Day
of School on February 9th, Valentine's Day on February 14th and Pancake Day (or Mardi Gras) on February 17th.
And of course, we will be celebrating Black History for the entire month of February. Of Special note this year,
February 15, 2015, will mark the 50th anniversary of the National Flag of Canada. This special Flag Day is the
perfect opportunity to learn more about how our flag was created and what it means to us.
Keep up the good work returning library books on time. The loan period is two weeks. Watch for an "Overdue
Notice" in your agenda for books that need to be returned.
VALENTINES for VETS
Each year, Veterans Affairs Canada invites Canadian schools, individuals and organizations to make "Valentines for
Vets" which are distributed to Veterans in long-term care facilities across the country in time for February 14.
This programme helps our youth to gain a greater understanding of the accomplishments and sacrifices of our
Veterans, giving them a better understanding of Canada's proud military history. It allows them to appreciate and
value our Veterans, not only on Remembrance Day but all year long. A very special thank-you to the students in Mrs.
Babwah's grade 6 class for taking this opportunity to make valentines for our Veterans. Your personally handcrafted valentines will bring smiles to the faces of Veterans in long term facilities across Canada.

NEWS FROM MRS. PIECH IN THE GYM
The Kin-ball league for grade 5 and 6 students is now complete. At the end of regular season games 3 teams were
tied; The Kin-ball Kings, Rebel Flaming Unicorns and Dream Team. After a hard fought game the Rebel Flaming
Unicorns were victorious. Congratulations to Jaan, Cedric, Victor, Ehaab and Daniel.
Students in Grades 3-6 have been enjoying Quidditch at lunch time during January. Games will continue until the
March Break. This scooter board game is based on the Harry Potter Books. Grade 3 and 4 students play every
Monday and Wednesday. Grade 5 and 6 students play on Tuesday and Thursday. House points are earned together
from all grades to determine the Quidditch House Champions. Good luck to our four teams; Griffindor, Hufflepuff,
Slytherin and Ravenclaw.
The Grade 5 and 6 students have an opportunity to go downhill skiing and snowboarding at Glen Eden
on Wednesday, February 4th. Students are reminded to dress appropriately for the weather; snow
pants, jacket, thick gloves and warm layers underneath are highly recommended. Helmets are
mandatory and will be provided for students renting equipment. We hope all the participating
students enjoy their day on the slopes.
Everything is AWESOME! All students at Plowman’s Park have been actively learning the movements to our next
Fitness Break during Physical Education class. We are moving like Robots and pretending to be Lego as we get fit to
this popular song from the Lego Movie.
How you play shows some of your character. How you win or lose shows all of it.
CITY OF MISSISSAUGA PROGRAM AT PLOWMAN’S - GET ACTIVE!!
Plowman’s Park Public School is proud to continue to collaborate with the City of Mississauga to offer Wal-Mart at
Play. This exciting program runs every Thursday until March 12, 2015, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m in the Plowman’s
Park gym. This program is for our Plowman’s Park Gr. 5 and 6 students only. Wal-Mart at Play is a no-cost drop-in
that offers a variety of sports activities and introductory instruction. Wal-Mart at Play is a structured play by
mentors in the community. Permission forms were sent home the beginning of January.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION FOR SEPTEMBER 2015
Starting school is a big step. Begin this journey into learning with us by registering your child
for kindergarten. If your child was born in 2011, he or she can start Junior Kindergarten in
September 2015. Students already attending Junior Kindergarten at Plowman’s Park do not
need to re-register.
Drop-In registration will be held at our school on Feb. 2, 3, 4 from 9-12 & 1-3 and Feb 5
from 9-12, 1-3 & 5-8 pm. Please contact Mrs. Harris in the office for your registration
package including a list of required documentation.
PLOWMAN’S PARK DONATION TO SALVATION ARMY by Mrs. Babwah’s Class
In December 2014, Plowman’s Park students helped the Salvation Army brighten up many children’s hearts by
donating new, unwrapped toys, mittens and other winter clothing to their community church Christmas Program.
Plowman’s Park students were thrilled to know that we have spread joy and happiness among others. We would like
to thank the many families who have participated in our annual toy drive.
Our grade six class helped motivate and encourage our students to help out in organizing and working together as a
team to support children in need.
Keep up the great work, Plowman’s!
SCHOOL COUNCIL INFORMATION
On January 30 Plowman’s Park held its first movie night this winter, Dolphin Tale 2! Students and parents alike
enjoyed the story of a bond between dolphins and humans in a relaxed group atmosphere.
We welcome our new Trustee Nokha Dakroub who will be visiting and touring our school on Friday, February 6 in
the afternoon.
The next School Council meeting will be held on February 11 at 6:30 pm in the school library. Everyone is invited!
