All children must meet age/grade requirements before the start of the program. Please register your child for the grade they are entering. Registrations will be processed upon receipt of a completed registration form and payment received. Registrations will continue until programs are filled. Payments are due at the time of registration. there is a $25.00 charge for all returned checks. The Youth Commission reserves the right to cancel any program /trip for any reasonable cause. If insufficient enrollment causes an activity to be cancelled, a full refund will be issued. Please allow 3-4 weeks for the processing of refunds. to be eligible for a requested refund, the request must be received one week prior to the start of the program. No refunds/credits will be granted after a program/activity has started. Your request will need to be a letter to the department stating the reason why you are requesting a refund along with your name and address. all credit card payments will be refunded by CHECK. No refunds will be posted to credit cards. Every effort will be made to notify you if a program has been cancelled or changed. Programs are subject to change in location and/or personnel. Proper behavior in Youth Commission programs is expected at all times. If improper behavior cannot be corrected after the first occurrence, parents will be notified and the child will be excused from further Youth Commission programs. The Town of Rockland does not provide accident or hospitalization insurance for any program participants. Therefore, all participants are strongly advised to have adequate personal coverage. Participation in all department programs shall be at the registrant’s own risk. INTRODUCTION Welcome to the 2014 Youth Commission Summer Recreational Program. The Youth Commission is entering into its 44th summer of providing activities to the young people of Rockland. The 2014 program has been designed to service a variety of ages, interests and ability levels. The Youth Commission welcomes input from parents and participants regarding program matters. Please feel free to call the office at any time with your questions and/or concerns. MISSION STATEMENT The Youth Commission remains committed to providing beneficial programs and activities for our young people. Our objective is to provide these programs and services in the most cost effective and innovative manner possible. We understand the importance of maintaining and strengthening our program offerings in terms of the “quality of life”, not only as it relates to our young people, but also to our community as a whole. DCR ANNUAL PARKPASS Again this year, the Youth Commission is participating in the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) 6th annual “Use Nature as Your Guide Program”. This is a ParksPass that residents of the community may borrow to visit state parks. The ParksPass entitles the bearer to free parking for one vehicle (excluding buses or vans) at over 50 facilities in the Massachusetts state parks system that charge a day-use parking fee. Please check www.mass.gov/dc for information about Massachusetts Outdoor Recreation. The pass is available in the Youth Commission Office on a first come, first borrowed basis. RECREATIONAL SWIMMING The Hartsuff Park swimming area is open to the public for recreational swimming beginning: Monday thru Friday, June 30th through August 15th. Hours are 11:00am to 5:00pm Lifeguards are NOT scheduled Saturday and Sunday There is no charge for recreational swimming The Park Department and The Youth Commission will NOT be responsible for any person utilizing the swimming area after 5:00pm and on Saturdays and Sundays. ADVENTURES IN SPACE June 30 – July 3rd Dave Heshion’s History of Rockets and Space Flight To future space explorers: We are pleased to offer the opportunity to experience a 4 day space odyssey right at the Community Center. Learn about flying, both in and out of the Earth’s atmosphere. Find out what it is like to live and work in space. You will also design your own space station, moon base or Mars Base. See how rockets work from the ground up by building and launching your own model rocket. Fly a simulated mission aboard the Shuttle Simulator “Can Do”. HARTSUFF PARK OFFERINGS FULL DAY PROGRAM June 30th – August 15th LOCATION: Hartsuff Park Recreation Area (off of Hingham Street) Camp Director: Joanna Kearns A diversified program will be offered for children who are 5 – 13 years of age. This full day program runs Monday through Thursday at the park from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm and every Friday is an optional “field trip day”. The staff to participant ratio will not exceed 1:10. Children will be divided into age groups overseen by the Camp Director and Counselors. Activities planned include Softball, Whiffle ball, Volleyball, Basketball, Flag/Touch Football, Street Hockey, board games, field games, hiking, storytelling, swimming and art & crafts. Entertainers have been scheduled to perform for the children. Special theme day activities have also been planned. Please refer to the program calendar, which details each fun-filled day and is available in the Youth Commission Office. Additional water play activities will also be scheduled on warm weather days. A camper’s daily backpack should include the following clearly marked items: towel, bathing suit, water shoes, sunscreen, a nutritious lunch, drinks, snacks and water bottle. Staff members have been chosen for their enthusiasm and their passion for working with children. Fun will surely come second only to safety. Weekly fees are due one week prior to the start of each program week. An extended hour is available from 8 – 9 am each morning and 3 – 5 pm. All hours are scheduled in full hour increments. This half day program is offered 4 days per week. Your child may attend Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday, 9am to 12 Noon. The staff to participant ratio is 1:5. All children must be toilet trained. The activities planned will provide directives in the areas of physical play, art & crafts, swimming and special events. In addition, weekly entertainment and special theme days have been planned. Children should arrive each day wearing sunscreen and their bathing suit under their clothes. All daily backpacks should include the following clearly marked items: change of clothes, sunscreen, water shoes, towel, a nutritious snack, drink and water bottle. Weekly fees are due one week prior to the start of each program week. An extended hour is available from 8 - 9 am each morning. All hours are scheduled in full hour increments. The 6-hour day will be focused around fun. They will have dozens upon dozens of games to choose from that ensure each child’s experience will be amazing. The repertoire of games includes a handful of classic sports such as soccer, flag football, baseball, kickball and hockey as well as some untraditional games including pony express, watermelon and Viking Ball. The coaches are carefully selected based on their enthusiasm, professionalism and experience. The staff includes undergraduate and graduate college students, athletes, teachers and established coaches. The staff to camper ratio is 1 coach per 10 participants. The program is run outside with a grassy field. In the event of rain, program will be held at the Community Center. If needed for an additional fee, we can provide early drop off @ 8:00am and extended day till 5:00pm for complete childcare coverage for working parents. A camper’s clearly marked backpack should include plenty of sunscreen, snacks, lunch and water. The program will focus on skill development and fundamentals. There will also be simulated games each day. Weymouth Varsity Baseball Coach and Rockland resident Jim Dolan will direct the camp. Jim will be assisted by the Weymouth JV Coach, Brendan Poirier and Rockland Varsity Coach, Nick Liquori. With an ideal ratio of 2 students per lesson, your student will REALLY learn how to play their favorite songs on guitar! No dry scales and “Mary Had a Little Lamb exercises for you! Jim’s inspirational beginner guitar curriculum uses simple arrangements of songs from famous artists that today’s children lover, like Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Maroon Five. Students Make REAL progress and practice daily when they LOVE the music they are learning! Students are paired by age to the best of our ability for Jim’s duo (two students at a time) lessons. Feel free to make arrangements from matching time slots if you plan on sharing your slot with a friend or sibling who is close in age. At the end of the program, a “Coffeehouse style” recital will be held at the Community Center for students and their family and friends on Friday, August 22nd. Instructor Jim Armstrong will provide a pro sound system and will accompany them on guitar to remove the “fear factor” and assure them that their 1st “gig” will be a rewarding one that they will never forget! But… ARRRR, and shiver me timbers! There's a stowaway on board! Perhaps the King of the High "C's" will know what to do. Join this salty crew of colorful scallywags when Bluebeard, Yellowbeard, Whitebeard, Purplebeard (well, you get the picture), along with the No Beards, hoist the Jolly Roger and set sail for a mighty adventure. Perfect for upper elementary school performers. This 40minute musical features six original songs for unison voices and some optional harmony, choreography, a helpful production guide, and a script with a minimum of 20 adaptable speaking parts. Songs include: Pirates All Are We, Stowaway!, King Of The High "C's," You Wanna Be A Pirate, Lost At Sea, and Singin' A Pirate Song. July 9, 23, 30 & August 6 Preschool Exercise with Ms. Tracey: A 4-week, 30 minute class designed to strengthen and develop the motor abilities and eye/hand coordination of the preschooler through basic exercise, game playing and dance. Class is limited to 10 children with adult participation. Location: Community Center Gym Day & Time: Wednesday, 1-1:30pm Dates: 7/9, 23, 30 & 8/6 Eligibility: 2 years of age accompanied by Adult FEE: $20 (includes child & adult) Preschool Tumbling with Ms. Tracey: A 4-week program designed to the preschooler to basic tumbling skills using mats, music, hoops, streamers and scooters. Most of the emphasis will be on the mats where they will learn basic warm up exercises, dance and light acrobatic moves including forward and backward rolls and cartwheels. Benefits of Tumbling: Awareness of body and space; create a love of movement; and, increased selfesteem, self-confidence and physical health. Great for both boys and girls! Suggested attire is loose-fitting clothes and/or leotards. The skills and connections learned can be used in competition and also carry over into all other sports. Designed for boys and girls ages 5 to 7. Location: Community Center Gym Days & Times: Wednesday, 2:30-3:30pm Dates: 7/9, 23, 30 & 8/6 Eligibility: Ages 5-7 FEE: $40 INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS Youth Commission Golf Program 2014 July 7 – August 6th The Youth Commission, in conjunction with Sterling Golf Management, would like to offer a summer golf program at the Rockland Golf Course. The following is a list of programs offered: Two Hour Program 3 days a week– Is for players who are at a level 2 or level 3. These players have been on the golf course and have some experience and have taken lessons. The goal of this program is to give them the tools they need to be successful on the golf course. This is not for beginners or players who may have taken a few lessons. Beginner One Hour Program – This program is for a child who has had lessons but never played golf, they may have taken SNAG lessons other lesson, or have been to the range but they do not have any on course experience. This program will get children to learn the basics as well as rules and course etiquette. SNAG -This program is essentially tee-ball for golf. It is a fun learning experience. It is recommended for young children as well as children who have never played golf before. This is a great program to start before moving on to a beginner lesson program. You do not need clubs as SNAG has its own equipment which we supply. We utilize oversized plastic clubs, tennis ball like “golf balls”, targets and other fun items. The goal of this program is to have the kids then join the beginner classes. Archers of all sizes and skill levels can learn to shoot with an easy-to-draw bow. All equipment is supplied. At the end of the course, students will know the following: - safety rules of archery - how to put on protective guards, finger tabs and arm guards - be able to string a bow and load an arrow onto the bow - understand the importance of technique of shooting form - aiming techniques JUST A QUICK NOTE: BEFORE YOU PURCHASE YOUR OWN BOW, PLEASE COME TO CLASS AND SPEAK WITH THE INSTRUCTOR.
