Abstract: Dr. Messier's research interests are wide, ranging from the basic understanding of
tree growth and mortality to the development of decision-making tools to better manage natural
and urban forests. His research spans various biomes across the world, and he has published
more than 170 refereed papers. He co-edited a book for the general public on basic ecological
concepts that can be observed in the city titled "Nature all around us". He also co-authored the
books "A critique of silviculture: managing for complexity" as well as "Managing forests in complex
adaptive systems".
Speaker Biography: Dr. Messier is a professor of Forestry Ecology and Scientific Director of the
Institute of Temperate Forest Sciences at the University of Quebec. Obtained his BSc in Forestry
(1984) and MSc (1986) in Forest Ecology from Laval University, Quebec, and his PhD (1991) from
the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Currently, Dr. Messier holds an NSERC/HydroQuebec Research Chair on Tree Growth.
