In June, the state board of education voted on several additions and subtractions to the course lists
offered by schools around the state. One of those courses affected was Honors Calculus. The state no
longer accepts this course code as a math credit toward gradation in any district in the state. This
leaves LEA’s scrambling to find a solution to this problem.
Students who are currently signed up for Honors Calculus will have a few options, which will be listed
below. As another result of this change, students who are taking Calculus AB will need to take
Calculus BC as well. Calculus AB will be offered in the fall and Calculus BC will be offered in the
spring.
To offset the loss of Honors Calculus, SHS is prepared to offer Honors Discrete Math. This math class
will be taught on campus in the fall semester. It will carry with it Honors credit just like Honors
Calculus did. The curriculum in Honors Discrete Math will set students up well for success in AP
Stats.
The following courses for 2016-2017 can be potential options for any student currently enrolled in
Calculus at any level:
Students currently enrolled in Honors Calculus may:

Take Honors Discrete Math in the fall and AP Stats in the spring
Take Calculus AB in the fall and Calculus BC in the spring
Take AP Stats only (not recommended)
Students currently enrolled in Calculus AB must either:

Take Calculus AB and Calculus BC this year
Take Honors Discrete Math only
Take Honors Discrete Math in the fall and AP Stats in the spring
Take AP Stats only (not recommended)
Students may not take Calculus AB and then drop out of Calculus BC.
In the future, students planning on going to college and/or enrolled in the STEM Academy will be
recommended to take the following math sequence:
Freshman year: Honors Math 2 and Honors Math 3
Sophomore year: Honors Math 3 and/or Pre-Calculus
Junior year: Calculus AB and Calculus BC
Senior year: Honors Discrete Math and AP Stats
