Mauku Results Sheet – Game ONE RESERVE ONE Grade Opposition: WAIUKU Date: 31st October 2009 Venue: PATUMAHOE DOMAIN We managed to get 7 players from the 9-11 grade to the game on time as they had just won their morning game at Clive Howe Reserve 50 minutes early. However, the Waiuku players warming up did look somewhat daunting, and “professional”, as we wandered into the Clubrooms. Mauku lost the toss and was put into bat by Waiuku. The openers for the day were Chris Innes and son Nevan ( under 15s). It was soon realised that Waiuku had in their team a Premier bowler, Matt Aspin ( took 4 for 28), who was just back from England for a stint with Waiuku. Runs proved very difficult to accumulate and after several tough overs, the first wicket of Nevan fell with the score at 13. Kyle Redshaw and William Furniss of the year 9-11 grade came and went with Shane Laing joining C.Innes at the crease. C.Innes played a false shot to mid on and was caught for a mere 7 runs off 19 overs. The score was now 4 for 50. We were “under the hammer” at this point and almost half the innings gone. Shane continued the struggle with Jono Watts, Broc Hooper, Kevin Haycock, Mark Daniels and Matt Watts offering stiff opposition in vital partnerships. At 8 down for 93 the result of the game did not look too good for Mauku. Shane was aggressive against any loose deliveries, and was soon in the mid forties. His final partnership with Joe Redshaw closed when Joe was bowled, after offering several overs of opposition, for 1 hard fought run. Shane ended the innings with an excellent 45 not out. Mauku were all out for 146. Waiuku needed 147 runs for victory! Waiuku had looked very sharp in the field and it was considered by some that this number of runs was not going to be enough. It was left to the young year 9-11 bowlers to lead the way. The two opening bowlers were Broc Hooper and William Furniss who were carrying on their work from the morning session. William clean bowled one opener with the first ball of his second over, and Broc dismissed the other opener similarly in his third. The score was 2 for 13 at this stage. The next batsman only lasted a couple of deliveries before William had him caught in the covers by Jono Watts for 1 run. Waiuku were now 3 for 19. Kyle and Joe Redshaw took over the bowling role after 11 overs and, as with Broc & William were bowling excellent “channels”. Joe took a wicket with his left armers by giving yours truly a close in catch. Kyle took a wicket with his second delivery, a great catch at mid wicket by Broc. This became a habit for Kyle who then went on to take a wicket in each of the next 4 overs and yet another in his final over. Kyle ended an eight over spell with 6 wickets for 15 runs. No other bowlers were needed and the game ended in just the 27th over. Mauku finally claimed victory in the 27th over with Waiuku all out for 90 runs. Karaka won the toss and graciously allowed our only two players present to bat ( can’t imagine what fielding with only two players could be like?). Callum Innes & Jono Watts set about their task and it was not until the 6th over that both were dismissed with the total at 28. Harley Jenkins came to the crease at number 3 and combined well with Broc Hooper for a fine partnership of 59 runs before Broc was caught when on 44 and the total 87. Nevan Innes joined Harley and together they continued their work from the morning game. The shots flowed with Harley accumulating ones and twos while Nevan went the more aerial path to runs. This partnership only ended when Nevan was given out LBW when on 57 and the score 193. The pair had put on 106 runs for the 4th wicket. Nevan’s stint at the wicket included three huge 6’s over square leg on both sides of the park. Harley continued his accumulation with William Furniss until finally stumped for 56. All batsmen, with the exception of captain C.R.Innes had a bat which was excellent. MAUKU were 9 down for 234 after 45 overs. KARAKA needed 235 runs for victory! Karaka started strongly, and their opening batsman was picking off any short deliveries ( and there seemed to be quite a number ) with ease. His power meant that once the ball was hit it disappeared over the boundary. A sharp fielding effort had the other opener run out with the score at 25. The big hitter was still powering along however. Both William Furniss and Broc were bowling well but the stumps were not attracting the ball… and it was not exactly warm out there! Broc did claim a fine lbw dismissal from a straight delivery to the number three batsman who looked threatening. Callum Innes was given the ball with the intention of bowling his left-arm fuller pitched inswingers. He bowled the big hitting opening batsman with just such a delivery mid way through his first over. Karaka were 2 down for 47. Callum’s next over was a double wicket maiden and he now had figures of 3 wickets for 1 run. At the other end Kyle Redshaw was also tying down the batsmen and had a batsman out with the final ball of his first over. Yet another sharp runout chance was taken and Karaka were in trouble at 6 for 58. Callum took a wicket in each of his final two overs to take his tally to 5 wickets for a mere 9 runs. The top Karaka batsman( scored 77 not out in the morning) was sneared by a fine seaming delivery from Callum which was swallowed up ( not literally) by Chris Innes at first slip. The skipper had waited all day for such an edge and he took it with both hands ( literally). Kyle cleaned out the last of the Karaka lineup and ended with figures of 2 for 17 of 6 overs. Karaka fell well short of their target, with drinks break one over away. All out in the 21st over. MAUKU claimed victory in the 21st over with KARAKA all out for 72 runs. C R Innes and son Callum Innes opened the batting. The Manukau bowling was accurate and difficult to get away. However Callum managed to hammer a couple of boundaries early on before being caught behind for 9 with the score at 21. Shane Laing joined C R at the crease. The score moved along steadily until drinks at 22 overs and the score at 75. Not long after drinks C R was caught when on 33 and the score 95. Harley Jenkins joined Shane and put on more runs but was dismissed for 6 and the total at 105. Nevan Innes joined Shane and was looking good before being bowled for 16 runs and the total 126. Mauku were now 4 wickets down. Kevin Haycock joined the fray and played his characteristic innings. Kev’s innings of 30 included numerous boundaries, and his dimissal only occurred when he faced the last over of the innings and tried to hit the ball out of the Domain. Kevin shared in a good partnership with Jono Watts. Jono scored 17 not out and together they put on 50 runs for the 5th wicket. When Kevin was dismissed, only two balls remained to be bowled. Broc Hooper strode to the crease after a few taunts from his mates to “walk down the pitch and hit him for six”, and, with amazing ease, did just that. A quick delivery was sweetly struck by Broc and almost landed in the far paddock over long-on. The last ball created a further three runs and Broc was not out 9 off just two deliveries. MAUKU were 6 down for 191 after 45 overs. MANUKAU needed 192 runs for victory! Broc Hooper opened the bowling at one end and had wicket with his second delivery. Callum Innes took the ball for the second over and he bowled the other opener with his first delivery. Both bowlers toiled away with consistency of the next 10 overs and both finished with 2 wickets each and Manukau were, at this stage 4 down for 42. The bowlers were changed, with Harley Jenkins and Kyle Redshaw taking over. Harley’s two overs brought 10 runs, of which, unfortunately, only 4 came from the bat. Kyle continued his consistent bowling of previous games, and bowled out his full complement of nine overs with fine figures of 4 wickets for 31 runs. Joe Redshaw had taken over from Callum and he took a key wicket of the hardhitting run scorer who was really scoring freely. We now had Manukau 9 down for 122 runs and looking to clean up the tail. Unfortunately, no one told the batsmen about this plan. William Furniss took the ball at one end for a final assault and bowled an excellent line and length but to no avail. The two Manukau batsmen taunted us ( in a nice way of course – and I had a gentle chat with them as well) for a further 52 runs before C R Innes took the ball and finally took the last wicket when they needed just 18 runs off 4 overs. The Manukau guys were good sports, and it was a tense, excellent game of cricket in the end. We could have shortened the game by a few overs if we had taken our catches! I dropped one myself to prove it can be done quite easily! MAUKU claimed victory in the 41st over with MANUKAU all out for 174 runs. C R Innes and son Callum Innes opened the batting. C.R was cleaned out by the second delivery of the innings, with the score a big fat zero, along with his own result. Callum was joined by Jono Watts. Unfortunately Jono was also dismissed, clean bowled, in the second over for 1 run and the Mauku total just 1. This was not looking promising for Mauku. Nevan Innes joined his older brother at the crease and together they started to resurrect the Mauku innings. Both were looking quite comfortable and playing good shots before Nevan succumbed to a seaming delivery which took out his leg stump ( similar to his morning dismissal) and Mauku’s total was just 29 runs with 3 wickets down. Nevan accumulated just 2 runs, but the partnership accumulated 24 runs. Callum was still looking solid at this stage. Kevin Haycock came to the crease but only lasted a few overs before being bowled for just 2 runs. William Furniss joined Callum, but he too joined the procession back to the “pavilion” soon after for zero. Mauku, 5 for 47, and in a great deal of trouble. Kyle Redshaw joined Callum and together they discussed rebuilding the Mauku innings. Unfortunately, with the total at 47, Callum missed a straight delivery and was bowled when looking like he was going to build a very valuable total for himself and his team. His 21 runs were invaluable to our cause. Broc Hooper joined Kyle and these two batsmen foiled the Weymouth attack for a further 38 runs before Kyle was run out, and then Broc was out caught. Kyle 15, Broc 9, added to the total to reach 85 runs. Matt Watts was caught off the first delivery faced, Joe Redshaw got 2 runs and Rajeev Verma was bowled for zero. Mauku all out for a mere 94 runs. We should have two batsmen, not available for this game, back for the next encounter with this team! MAUKU were all out for 94 runs in the 27th over. WEYMOUTH needed 95 runs for victory! While we never give in, it was difficult to see how we could defend 94 runs. This was even more difficult given that a number of Senior A players had been drafted into the Weymouth team due to their Senior A team having a bye. Their opening bowler, and their eventual not out batsman, were both of that level. Who knows how many more were from the higher level of that Club. The Mauku bowlers did try hard and bowled well, so well in fact that we did take four wickets, and should have taken more, if all catches offered, were taken. Five bowlers were used to try and stop the tide of Weymouth batsmen but to now avail. Playing on a grass pitch was new to most, and against such experienced players, it was never going to be easy. Broc, Kyle ( two maidens), William, and Callum bowled well, and it was only Broc who missed out on getting a wicket. We look forward to meeting this team again ( it should be a very different team unless their Senior A team has a bye of course ) at home, and turning the tables on them. C R Innes and son Callum Innes opened the batting. Callum was bowled in the second over for 1 run and Jono Watts joined C R at the crease. Unfortunately Jono did not last long and was out caught without scoring. Nevan Innes joined C R at the crease and he went the same way as Jono, being clean bowled for no score. Mauku were 3 down for 19 runs. Harley Jenkins strode to the crease. Slowly but surely the runs accumulated. The aim was for both batsmen to reach drinks at 22 overs without losing another wicket. This was achieved with the score at 58 runs. After drinks the runs continued to flow and it was not until the 30th over that a break through for the United team happened when C R played a rash shot and was out LBW for 43 runs. The partnership with Harley had added 96 valuable runs. Broc Hooper joined Harley and they compiled a further 50 runs before Broc was bowled by a good seaming delivery which took out his middle stump. Shane Laing took over with Harley and together they took our score to 201 before Shane was run out going for a second run. Shane had scored 19 runs. William Furniss came to the crease and scored 2 runs before the close of 45 overs. Harley finished his innings on 86 not out. A very fine knock indeed. MAUKU had compiled 212 for 6 wickets. UNITED needed 213 runs for victory! United started well. This was due also to the poor bowling effort of a number of bowlers. This was clearly shown by the fact that they had our drinks score of 58 runs after just 9 overs. However, Callum Innes had taken a wicket as had Kyle Redshaw. The scoring still had to be throttled, as runs were coming far too easily. C R Innes took the ball, and along with Kyle bowled a nagging line and length. Kyle’s first two overs were wicket maidens, with a wicket in each of these overs. A third wicket in his 7th over completed a fine effort off nine overs of 3 for 28. C R in the meantime had taken one wicket for 27 off nine overs. At this stage United were 6 down for 123. Callum and Harley took the ball with Harley taking a wicket with his first delivery. Callum took a wicket as well and United were 7 for 150. Harley took a further two wickets and the opposition needed 42 runs for victory. The final batsman did their job well and with just one over to go needed 12 runs to clinch a victory. Enter Broc and his accurate bowling. The left hander took to an off side delivery, the ball flew in the air way out to deep extra cover where Jono Watts was running across and back towards the boundary and took an outstanding catch to close out United and win the game for Mauku. What was even more incredible was that quite a number of overs were bowled in the rain, and the ball was like a piece of soap. Good stuff guys and well caught Jono! MAUKU won the game vs United by 12 runs. PLAYER OF THE MATCH: HARLEY JENKINS with 86n.o. and 3 for 29. Callum Innes & Shane Laing opened the batting. Runs were hard to come by but the two batsmen toiled away and after 10 overs were 30 runs on the board. Unfortunately Callum was bowled at this point. Chris Innes joined Shane at the crease and together they took the score through to 60 runs but in the 18th over Shane was bowled for 16. Chris fell shortly afterwards for 9 and the score at 64 for 2. Harley Jenkins and William Furniss came to the crease. It was not long after this that Harley was caught out for 1 run as was William for 4. Kevin Haycock came to the crease but soon fell for 3 runs. Nevan Innes & Jono Watts were now at the crease. Jono was bowled for 0 and Nevan fell for just 3 runs caught at mid off. Kyle Redshaw was bowled for 2, Joe Redshaw bowled without scoring, and Brad Bebington left not out on 3. Mauku had just 82 runs on the board losing 9 wickets for a mere 22 runs. MAUKU had compiled 82 for 10 wickets. WAIUKU needed 83 runs for victory! Waiuku started off well in their accumulation of runs. Callum Innes and Kyle Redshaw opened the bowling. Kyle was the only successful bowler with both openers dismissed. Kyle’s figures were 2 for 33. We could have taken more wickets but luck was not on our side on the day. Nevan Innes, Joe Redshaw, and William Furniss were the other bowlers to toil away without much luck. Chris Innes kept wickets to give Nevan a break and allow him his first bowl for 2 years. WAIUKU won the game vs MAUKU in the 23rd over. PLAYER OF THE MATCH: Not Sure if anyone deserved this accolade???!!! Callum Innes and Chris Innes opened the batting for Mauku. They both toiled away until Callum was bowled for 24. Broc Hooper joined C.R at the crease. C.R soon departed to a good slip catch when on 22. Harley Jenkins joined Broc at the crease and the score moved along at a good rate until Harley was caught when on 15. Shane Laing joined Broc but only managed 6 runs before being caught. The score had slowed to a crawl at this stage. Jono Watts joined Broc but only managed 1 run before being bowled. Kyle Redshaw came to the crease but only added 1 run to the total before being caught. William Furniss joined Broc and the score started to accelerate before Broc was finally caught out to a good catch when on 42 runs. Joe Redshaw joined William and hit an excellent boundary to backward square before being bowled. Nevan Innes came to the crease and was caught at square leg to a good catch for 3 runs. Leonard Powell joined William and hit a couple lusty blows for a good 11 not out. At the other end William was playing aggressively and ended on a fine knock of 46. He was run out on the last ball. MAUKU had compiled 220 for 10 wickets. KARAKA needed 221 runs for victory! Karaka did not start off well. The first ball bowled ended with a run out at the keepers end. The bowling was shared around between Broc, Kyle, William, Harley, Nevan, Joe, Callum and Leonard. Unfortunately the scorers for Karaka did not do justice to our scorebook so bowling figures are difficult to sort out as they seemed to give up in the latter stages, plus they had the names mixed up. However, Broc bowled with his usual consistency ( 2 maidens) , even throwing in the odd leg cutter to mesmerise the batsman ( and the keeper at times). Harley took one wicket, Kyle chimed in with 2 more and William also took a couple for good measure. Callum had two catches taken off his bowling and Nevan clean bowled one batsman. A piece of outstanding fielding by Kyle managed to run out the batsman he had just bowled to, when the batsman started down the pitch and Kyle picked up the ball of his follow through and threw down the stumps at the keepers end. The batsman was a foot out of his crease. In the end, even though the Karaka opening batsman accumulated 40 runs, the overall team effort could not match the Mauku result. All out for 163. MAUKU won the game by dismissing KARAKA for 163 runs. It was agreed to be a forty over game due to a late start ( Mauku players were late to arrive from their fine win against Strathallan in the morning!). Callum Innes and Nevan Innes opened the batting for Mauku. The first ball faced showed that this was not going to be a very pleasant experience for batting, as the ball shot under Callum’s bat, about 6 inches above the ground, from a good length. Nevan did not get much of a chance against a similar delivery soon after and was bowled for no runs. William Furniss joined Callum and he seemed to have a good feel for the pitch conditions very quickly. Callum was bowled not long after for just 4 runs. Harley Jenkins joined William and both batsmen seemed to relish the batting conditions. The runs flowed, with not many boundaries, until William succumbed to the relentless pitch and was caught when on 22. Broc Hooper joined Harley and they continued to accumulate the runs. However, at drinks we were only 54 runs even though it did seem like more had been scored at that point. Harley was finally out caught to a very good catch for a well compiled 30. CR Innes joined Broc and immediately found the pitch conditions somewhat fickle with the first two deliveries almost shooting along the deck. Fortunately bat on ball ensured no LBW decision was possible. The score moved along to just over 100 with CR hitting 33 runs off just 20 deliveries ( 5 boundaries and a 6 included) before being caught & bowled. Broc was bowled for 6 runs and Shane Laing for 1 before Jono Watts and Kyle Redshaw combined at the crease for a final onslaught on the bowling. Jono was very aggressive and hit 3 boundaries in a short stay at the crease and ended on 19 not out. Kyle supported well with a fine 13 not out. Mauku finished on 152 off their 40 over stint at the crease. MAUKU had compiled 152 for 7 wickets. MANUKAU needed 153 runs for victory! Manukau started slowly and found the pitch conditions very difficult for scoring ( as we had also). Callum Innes and Broc Hooper opened the bowling. Callum toiled away for 8 overs and finally had an LBW decision in the 7th over against one opener ( had scored just 4 runs). Meanwhile Broc was bowling his normal tight line & length at the other end, and in his 6th over cleaned out the other opener. Broc’s 8 overs yielded just 9 runs with 2 maidens included. Joe Redshaw and William Furniss, bowled 3 overs each, without much luck, as did Nevan Innes who bowled just two. After drinks Chris Innes and Kyle Redshaw took over the bowling duties. Chris’s first two balls went for 8 runs and he joked that normally he helped to win games not lose them!! However the bowling tightened up and evetually CR bowled 8 overs with one wicket for 32 runs. The real star of the day however was Kyle. In his second over, he took 3 wickets ( all bowled) in 4 balls. In his 5th over Kyle took a further 2 wickets, and in his final over a further 2 wickets. Seven wickets for 24 runs. Manukau all out for 121 runs. Another ball to be mounted for this season. MAUKU won the game by dismissing MANUKAU for 121 runs.
