Ready, Set– Let’s Sell!
A Guide to Safe and Effective Selling
July, 2014
“In Scouting, a boy is encour-
An Ideal Year of Scouting needs two things...
aged to educate himself instead of being instructed.”
With the start of a new school year, Packs,Troops, Posts and
Crews are all planning for the year’s adventures, trips and
activities.
Lord Robert Baden-Powell
One thing most successful business people know, if you fail to plan, you
plan to fail. It is an old axiom that fits so many of our activities. Leaders
are critical in ensuring that the ideas and wishes of the Scouts are met
during the annual program, but the perspective of an adult is necessary
to ensure that the activity is feasible, safe, and executed in a way that
everyone gets a chance to take part.
Special points of
interest:
 Hot to get an Ideal Year
of Scouting
 Procedures for Popcorn
Kernels
That’s where popcorn comes in. Whether it is activity fees, camping fees,
membership dues or equipment purchases, Popcorn and Camp Cards
provide necessary funding a Scout Unit needs to ensure an Ideal Year of
Scouting is possible.
 Michael Beck Training
 Selling programs lay the
foundation for good
communication skills
In this issue:
Even the most well-off Units have parents who need that relief from the
pressure everyday expenses put on our budgets. Don’t assume everyone
can make it through an entire year; give them the chance to earn their
way to a year of excitement and adventure– the Scouting way!
“We want to be successful – where do we start?”

Why Sell?
Volume 2, Issue 1
Before the Scouts hit the ground running after people for Popcorn sales, preparation should be
done by the Unit Popcorn Kernel and other adults:

Check with your District Kernel; what obligations are there for your unit to sell?

Make sure you sign up (commit) and send someone to the Michael Beck seminar– these steps
alone will bring an extra 2% Commission!

Make sure you gain the commitment of parents and Scouts; let them know what is at stake! An
Ideal Year of Scouting!

Plan your campaign:

If you attended last year’s
presentation, Mr. Beck has
given this presentation a shot
of new information that will
get you off to a quick start

Selling Opportunities Develop Good Communication
Skills, Leadership Traits and Self -Confidence
Have you ever heard a parent
say this:
“My son is a Boy Scout, not a
salesman.”
We are all
selling , all the
time.
Whether we
are presenting
in a business
environment,
meeting a
banker to ask for a loan, or
standing at a crowded lunch
counter trying to get the
clerk’s attention, we are selling
our presence and soliciting
attention.
From the moment a youth
enters a classroom for the first
time, he learns to present
himself so that others accept
him, take him seriously and
listen to him. As that boy
grows, he has to be able to
offer opinions, defend
viewpoints and propose ideas,
solutions and lead others
toward goals.
Scouting sales programs allow
our youth to develop these
skills in a safe environment,
with known and accepted
products and in an arena
where adults can coach them
to success.
A Boy Scout who is working
on an Eagle Project has to
establish his goals, encourage
his workers and guide them,
and solicit help from donors
and volunteers. Many times he
has to direct adults and
negotiate for permits. Where
does he learn these skills?
Selling Camp Cards and
Popcorn builds the confidence
necessary to converse with
adults, to present concepts and
ask for concrete results. Scouts
frequently point to their
success in selling programs as a
foundation for the skills they
applied to accomplish their
goals.
Your Scouts will benefit in
many ways- from strong
programs to strong
communication skills and
confidence- when you take part
in the sales campaigns. Make
sure to give them this great
opportunity!
