Lord Robert Baden-Powell One thing most successful business people know, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. It is an old axiom that fits so many of our activities. Leaders are critical in ensuring that the ideas and wishes of the Scouts are met during the annual program, but the perspective of an adult is necessary to ensure that the activity is feasible, safe, and executed in a way that everyone gets a chance to take part. Selling Opportunities Develop Good Communication Skills, Leadership Traits and Self -Confidence Have you ever heard a parent say this: “My son is a Boy Scout, not a salesman.” We are all selling , all the time. Whether we are presenting in a business environment, meeting a banker to ask for a loan, or standing at a crowded lunch counter trying to get the clerk’s attention, we are selling our presence and soliciting attention. From the moment a youth enters a classroom for the first time, he learns to present himself so that others accept him, take him seriously and listen to him. As that boy grows, he has to be able to offer opinions, defend viewpoints and propose ideas, solutions and lead others toward goals. Scouting sales programs allow our youth to develop these skills in a safe environment, with known and accepted products and in an arena where adults can coach them to success. A Boy Scout who is working on an Eagle Project has to establish his goals, encourage his workers and guide them, and solicit help from donors and volunteers. Many times he has to direct adults and negotiate for permits. Where does he learn these skills? Selling Camp Cards and Popcorn builds the confidence necessary to converse with adults, to present concepts and ask for concrete results. Scouts frequently point to their success in selling programs as a foundation for the skills they applied to accomplish their goals. Your Scouts will benefit in many ways- from strong programs to strong communication skills and confidence- when you take part in the sales campaigns. Make sure to give them this great opportunity!
