CCLebrate Summer
Grade 1: Junior Explorers
Junior Explorers is designed exclusively for gifted and high-achieving children entering first grade for the 2017–18 school
year, living in the Rockwood and Parkway School Districts. With hands-on learning experiences, children have fun using
their creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills as they explore science, literature, art, math, and technology
opportunities. Students may join this summer adventure for all or part of the day.

Geology Rocks!: Wanted: young geologists to collect and
analyze rocks, minerals and crystals.
Circuit Science: Thinking like an electrical engineer, solve
challenges and explore possibilities using snap circuits.
Let’s Discover the Ocean: Be Join us to investigate the many life
forms that live in the ocean! Classify, compare, and analyze!
Junk Food Science!: Do you like to eat candy, chips, and soda?
Did you know you can experiment and learn from them, too?
Come find out how!
Meet Leo Lionni!: Do you like to tell stories and draw? Your
answer could help you become a great author like Leo Lionni.
Science Magic: How did they do that? Was it magic? No! It was
science! Be a magician as you learn the science behind magic
tricks.
Windmill Engineering: Learn how to be a mechanical engineer.
Create and test your own windmill creation to see how much
weight it can lift.
Lemonade Stand Entrepreneurs!: Entrepreneurs have lots of
decisions to make when planning a successful business. Join us
in our lemonade challenge.
Puppetpalooza!: Transform lifeless materials into a lively
puppet! We’ll use different styles and craft stories about the
characters.

Around the World in Five Days: Join us to explore the culture,
foods, games, and sites of 5 new countries!
All Aboard Hogwarts Express: Celebrate the world of Harry
Potter! We will make wands, analyze characters, act out scenes,
create projects, enjoy Hogwarts food, and more!
Cartooning: Learn basic drawing and cartooning techniques and
design your own characters to use in a comic book strip.
Coding for Kids 1: Introduction to a coding program, Scratch.
Work to analyze realistic solutions to computer problems.
Gizmos and Gadgets: Harness your creativity and become an
inventor using electronic building blocks. What will you create?
Instant Challenge Engineers: Want a challenge? Put on your
problem solving hats and join us as we engineer solutions to new
problems!
Animate with Minecraft: Use your favorite Minecraft characters
and stop-motion animation techniques to create your own videos.
Chess for Beginners: Have you ever wanted to know how chess
is played? Make the right move and join us to learn basics of the
game.
Coding for Kids II: So, you know the basics of Scratch? Use your
knowledge to create a program to share.
Mask Making: Go wild! Create masks using varied media and
recycled materials.
Eric Carle Needs Your Help!: Eric Carle needs your help! He is
looking for new characters for his next book. Create a book in
Carle’s style using their new characters!
Meet the Masters: Learn about master artists and create artwork
in their style and using their medium.
Fingerprinting Forensics: Learn how detectives solve crimes.
Explore the forensics of fingerprinting.
Monumental Lego: Do you dream of becoming a LEGO master
builder? Use your critical thinking and problem solving skills to
turn your favorite landmarks into amazing LEGO creations.
Junior Mind Mania: Mindbenders, spatial math, puzzle
manipulatives and other challenges will stretch your thinking in
new ways.
Pizza Box Arcade: Dream. Design. Build. Play! Design an arcade to
match your imagination, all contained within a simple pizza box!
Lights, Cameras, Action!: Work as part of a theater crew using
creativity and problem solving to write, make costumes, and act
out a script.
Quiztastic: If you are a master of knowledge and have dreamed of
appearing on a TV game show, then you will love this fast-paced
quiz show.
Strategy and Logic Game Play: Engage in strategy and logic
games that will challenge your ability to problem solve, reason and
outthink your opponent.
Where the Sidewalk Ends: Enter the wacky, wonderful world of
Shel Silverstein and create your own original poetry book based on
his work.
Paper Engineering: Create both relief and 3-D paper sculptures
using simple engineering techniques.
Storybook Engineering: Do some fairy tale endings just seem
too perfect? Create new endings for favorite tales with hands-on
projects.

to create a 3D animated story.
App Inventor: Transform your ideas into a real app using App
Inventor for Android. No experience required!
Arcade Engineering: Dream. Design. Build. Play! Will you have a
claw machine, pinball, or skee ball in your arcade?
Around the World in Five Days: Join us to explore the culture,
foods, games, and sites of 5 new countries!
Beginning Robotics: Use problem solving and critical thinking to
create and program a LEGO EV3 robot. Complete objectives and
tasks.
Build & Program a Tetrix Robot!: Come to this class to build,
program, and run a metal and plastic robot that has an Arduino
brain!
Dissection Lab: Explore anatomy and physiology through
dissection, including frogs and fetal pigs. Learn how tissues and
organs work.
Game Maker Advanced: If you have already taken a Scratch
programming class, try this class to move to the next level with
more advanced games.
Jewelry Studio: Boys and girls will design and etch a copper
pendant, and work with leather and fibers to create pendants and
bracelets.
Lights, Cameras, Action!: Work as part of a theater crew using

problems!
