JUDO INSTRUCTION
Introduction
1. The RE Games 2017 Judo competition will take place in the Tidworth Leisure Centre over
the period of Tue 6 – Thu 8 Jun 17. Introductory training and weigh in for the
competition will start at 1900hrs on Tue 6 Jun 17 and will last for one hour for all
players. Novice players will then carry out specific Judo training under direction of
qualified Army Judo coaches throughout the day on Wed 7 Jun 17. The event proper
will commence at 0830hrs Thu 8 Jun 17 and will be finished by 1430hrs.
Scoring Competition
2.
The scoring competition will be for novice teams only and will be knockout or league
based depending on the number of entries, before progressing in to a final match to determine the
champion team for 2017. The scoring competition is aimed at players relatively or brand new to
Judo i.e. graded yellow belt or below. Note that a change to the ruling will allow players to
compete if they have competed at the Army Judo Championships so long as still yellow belt or
below. There will be a Judo coaching period immediately prior to the event, when new players will
receive first class instruction and tuition from qualified UKCC Army and RE Judo black belt judo
coaches. Fights will be against players of a similar weight.
Teams
3.
As Judo is being included as a sport at the RE Games, this event will be open to both Major
and Minor Military units only. Each unit is to enter one team only which will consist of three male
players (1 x Over 90kgs player, 1 x 73kgs to 90kgs player and 1 x Under 73kgs player), and one
female player (of any weight). Should units have additional players who wish to give the sport a try
they can be put forward as reserves and will receive training on day one and be given the
opportunity to fight as individuals should they wish in a non-scoring event on competition day. .
4.
Judo is a contact sport therefore players nominated should be of a robust nature both
physically and mentally. Players who are strong, fit and flexible tend to be the most successful. To
assist units in their selection of suitable players, think of the heavyweight of having attributes
matching the build of a front or second row forward in rugby. The middleweight should be of
similar build to a back row forward or centre, with lightweights of equivalent build and stature to a
scrum half, or fast winger.
5.
Team captains are to submit a team sheet (found at page 5) at 1730hrs Tue 6 Jun 17 to the
event coordinator, WO2 Chesney, during the team captains brief at the Tidworth Leisure Centre.
Teams and Captains are to report to the Tidworth Leisure Centre at 1845hrs on Tue 6 Jun 17 for
the initial safety brief, issue of judo suits, weigh-in and a one-hour introductory session.
6.
Judo suits and belts (Judogi) will be provided however team captains are to ensure their
players have the following equipment:

Thu 8 Jun the competition may have to be on a knockout basis. Team captains will be present on
the Wed evening to witness the draw.
11.
All team members are to be available for the mandatory Judo training sessions on the
evening of Tue 6 Jun (1900 – 2000hrs) and Wed 7 Jun (0800 – 1630hrs). They are to be in the
vicinity of the competition area for the morning of the event on Thu 8 Jun, and will be called
forward by their respective coaches 10 mins prior to their matches for a warm up. A timetable of
fights will be available so that players can plan their time accordingly.
12.
The competition rules are in accordance with normal Judo Competition rules as published
by the British Judo Association and used in the Army and UK Armed Forces novice
championships. A full list of these rules will be provided and explained to each team as part of the
Judo training day by their allocated coach. All matches will be up to 3 minutes in length.
13.
The teams of three males will compete against their opposite number individually. 3 points
will be scored for a win by Ippon (knockout throw, pin or submission), 2 points for a win by a lesser
score or disqualification of an opponent and 1 point awarded for fighting. Scores for the four fights
will be totalled and the team with the highest score will progress to the next round. In the event of
a tie a number will be drawn to decide which male weight or female will refight to decide the tie.
Teams losing in the first round will compete in the Plate competition for positions 9-15, the winning
teams will compete for positions 1-8. Note that females will be entered as either heavyweight or
lightweight and will fight as individuals for the respective titles. Units may enter more than one
female. The decision on what weight differentiates heavy and lightweight will be decided at weigh
in once number of females have been confirmed. This will enable similar numbers in each of the
categories.

scouts will be present during the competition, and will invite those players who are successful and
