Escape Vents in Traps Pilot Study STFA NMFS-SEFSC CFMC CHRONOLOGY • On February 18 2008, the STFA invited the CFMC and the local press to showcase the traps. • In attendance were Mr. Eugenio Piñeiro, Mr. Virdin Brown, Ms. Diana Martino and Ms. Graciela Garcia-Moliner from the CFMC; the STFA participants Mr. Julian Magras, Mr. Jimmy Magner, Mr. Winston Ledee and Mr. Ernest A. Quetel, Sr. as well as Mr. Gerald Greaux Jr. who will be sampling the catch. Events • The Daily News and the St. Thomas Source (online press) were at hand Ms. Lynn Freehill and Ms. Molly Morris • The traps were shown with the various escape vent sizes • The random set up of the traps (each set up different for each fisherman) was agreed upon. • The protocol for fishing was discussed as well as the data collection requirements. PROTOCOL • All fishers would record the discards – everything that is not legal or harmful (100% compliance with the regulations is required). Estimated length and weight would be recorded (see form) • They will keep a log of all pertinent information: dates of deployment, lat/long, soak time, etc. • All fish from each trap will be placed in bag and labeled, brought to shore for identification and measurements. • All fish was to be donated to some charity after being sampled.
