Newington Gunners Soccer Club http://www.mccredie.org.au/newington/ Newington Gunners Soccer Club are proudly supported by McCredie Uniting Church, Guildford No. 11/07 Announcement: SIX-A-SIDE Competition 9th & 11th June 2007 - was CANCELLED! Unfortunately NSWCFA Management Committee have had to CANCEL this competition for the 2nd year in succession due to appalling weather conditions forcing Councils to close sporting fields. Better luck next year! Round 10 results Lidcombe Churches 10 U6 Newington Gunners (Red) 0 The highlights of the game were: some good runs up the field by (man of the match) Jason, Mitchell and Armaan Declan and Bradley continued improvement lots of saves from our (very busy) goalkeepers Lachlan and Noah, and how Oscar and Rushan kept chasing the ball in defence The young Gunners again showed that their skills were improving and, with their parents support, they are still enjoying their football each week. OLQP Falcons (Q) 2 U7 Newington Gunners 0 The 1st half was a very even affair, with the ball going from end to end. We exhibited great defensive skills with Jaxson, proving that goal keeping may well be his calling. He stopped some very difficult balls from getting through and put his body on the line in going out to meet the attacker. Outstanding effort Jaxson. Having a full complement of players this week, there was a concerted effort to make sure everyone had a run, although the referee was of the opinion we were only playing 15mins a half, the substitutes barely warmed up before they were having a drink at half time. At the end of half time the score was 0-0. The second half started much the same as the first, however some positional changes meant that the defense we exhibited in the 1st half translated into better attack in the 2nd, and some poor cross field plays took the ball across the goal mouth and were capitalized upon by the Falcons, resulted in 2 goals in quick succession. All in all the team is improving as a unit and the spirit amongst the players is much better than it was earlier in the season. Barring the couple of positional play errors, it was a very even match and there is no reason why we cannot build on our efforts in the coming weeks. On a final note, the 2nd half was claimed to be over 20 minutes, however, the timepiece used must be faulty in that case, as it was only slightly over 15 minutes again. There needs to be some consistency in the junior games. Some weeks we are playing on ½ a full sized field and the next we are on a mini field where a kick off almost goes into the net. This week there was an issue with the referee only playing 15 minutes a half. U8 Newington Gunners 4 St Columbas Castle Hill 1 Illness left us very short of players this week which meant we could only field a team of 9. Luckily the opposition were short too with 10. We took the game to them from the first whistle and had them penned back in their own half for long periods. After good efforts by Lawrence, Tryston and Daigo we finally broke their defence mid way through the half with Sylvan slotting away the loose ball from short range after great lead up work by Thomas. Sylvan then made it 2 just before half time with a much firmer strike. The back 3 of Ruben, Tyler and Kevin did a fantastic job repelling any breakaways and immediately turning defence into attack with a strong running and passing game. Even the opposition parents were commenting on how well the defence played and covered for each other. Alex Palmer had very little to do in goal but was up to the task when they finally managed a shot on goal. A half time shuffle saw Thomas take over goal keeping duties and Sylvan drop back into defence. Alex joined the midfield to help out with his fresh legs and Tyler was given leave to push further forward. Unfortunately the change at the back led to some confusion after the break and St Columbus somehow managed to scramble the ball into our goal to make it 2-1. Digging deep into their reserves this instigated a resurgent Gunners to go all out to finish the game off. We peppered their goal constantly and were unlucky not to make it to double figures. Eventually the goal came after Tryston unselfishly found Ruben unmarked on the far post to make it 3-1. Tyler, Daigo and Lawrence were close to being on the score card but it was Tryston who finally got rewards for his efforts. There were many contenders for man of the match but I couldn’t separate Ruben and Tyler for their all round work rate so they shared the award. Well done all. Final score 4-1 Coach Dave U10 Newington Gunners 2 Guildford McCredie 0 For two weeks the Under 10s had played well but been forced to be satisfied with a draw; today our luck turned against our "big brother" team, Guildford McCredie, and we had a famous victory. We started full of confidence and dominated the first half with solid defense and great attack. We scored a great team goal from a passing movement that went from Cameron (in defense) to Lewis to Nuno to Greg for the score. We played some outstanding football with great passing in attack and great team defense. Our defense was so good that Mark (in goals) only touched the ball once or twice. In the second half, Guildford McCredie turned up the heat and Nuno (who took over from Mark in goals) had to make a couple of good saves, including one fantastic reflex foot block. But overall we continued to dominate the game with passing, speed in attack, and team defense. Lewis scored an opportunistic goal with less than ten minutes to go and we had secured our first victory of the season, against one of the top teams. Special mention to Breanna who continues to improve with every match, Jason who was outstanding in defense, and Anthony who was all over the field. Lewis was player of the match for his great attacking runs. Final score, won 2-0.
