Brock Middle School Grade 7 Sports Policy:
Expectations....
At Brock Middle School we focus on Respect and Responsibility. We are an 'R' & 'R' school! We take this
focus to our sports teams as well as our academic work.
In the interest of participation and school spirit, chosen team members have demonstrated a sincere
wish to play. We set high expectations for our students, and participation in team sports is dependent on their
ability to follow these expectations. Team members:
 Are Teachable – They are willing and eager to learn and improve skills and knowledge of the game.
 Are Committed to the Team – Attend all practices. No one quits part way through the season. Work
hard and cooperate as a team member.
 Give Maximum Effort – Students show hustle and determination.
 Demonstrate Sportsmanship and Respect for each other and other teams, coaches and referees.
 Demonstrate Citizenship in all situations at school, on the team, at away games.
 Maintain an Acceptable Level of Academic Work in both effort and achievement.
Every effort will be made to give each player on the team who meets these expectations fair playing
time during regular season league games. If the team should participate in playoffs some players may end up
playing more than others.
It is expected that each player will attend every practice and game and will arrive on time with gym
strip ready to put in maximum effort. When a player has to miss the occasional practice or game, it is
expected that she/he will communicate with the coach beforehand, whenever possible, informing of absence.
It is expected that each player will wear a Brock jersey with pride and respect, including respect for
teammates, other teams, coaches and officials. Each player plays by the rules and shows respect for the rules.
Whether a team wins or loses, it is expected that each player will demonstrate a “winning” and sportsmanlike
attitude. Clean jerseys will be turned in to the coach at the end of the season.
 Please note: The teacher sponsor/coach will be responsible for making decisions and their
decisions shall hold.
Team Selection:
Whether on the Volleyball or Basketball Team players will be evaluated by a group of coaches selected
from our coaching body to evaluate and assist the head coach with team selection. If there are two teams
Brock will run a competitive team and a development team. Both of these teams participate in the same
league and provide an excellent level of competition.
Dear Parents / Guardians,
Your child has expressed an interest in being involved with a school volleyball team this season. The following
aspects of our program are important and you should be aware of them.
The school will have two levels of volleyball teams this season if the numbers warrant, both participating in
the same league. We have named our teams the Silver and Blue teams. The Silver team tends to be a higherskilled, more competitive team while the Blue team tends to be less competitive and has less of an emphasis on
skill excellence and more on participation and developing the skills required to play the game.
Our tryout process is one that we hope is a fair and unbiased whenever we need to hold them. Our goal is to
place players on a team that best suits their abilities and that will maximize their potential to improve
throughout the season. Generally we have a panel of 3 to 4 coaches from our coaching staff assist the head
coach in determining the team. We hope that by doing this it allows the head coach the freedom to know that
the teams are a reflection of who should be there.
Our Silver team is selected based on the skills demonstrated by the players during the tryout period. All
players at this level will receive fair playing time during the regular season to continue developing their skills,
provided they attend all practices. It is important to note, though, that while all students will get an
opportunity to play in the playoffs, they may not receive equal playing time. The amount of playing time
each player receives during the playoffs is at the discretion of the coach.
Our Blue team will focus primarily on skill development and high levels of participation. Equal playing time
during the entire season is the expectation provided players attend practices regularly. Players need to look at
this team as an opportunity to develop higher level skills with a goal of making the Silver team next year.
Please remember that all coaches and teacher sponsors are volunteering their time to provide your child with
an opportunity to play. In order for school sports to thrive at Brock Middle School it is imperative that coaches
feel well supported at all times. Should your child make either team you will be expected to exhibit the same
code of conduct we expect of our students.
If you have any concerns regarding this information or if you have questions about how the team is being
run please feel free to contact Mr. Penner, Brock Athletic Director, at the school.
