WHEREAS, the City of Missoula invests

Resolution Approving City of Missoula
As a “Let’s Move! City”
WHEREAS, the City of Missoula invests in a healthy built environment including public parks, trails, and
complete streets; and
WHEREAS, the City of Missoula partners with numerous private and public entities to offer recreational,
educational, and policy choices that promote fitness and good nutrition among Missoula’s children;
and
WHEREAS,16.3 percent of American children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 are obese; and
WHEREAS, 27 percent of third-graders in Missoula County are overweight including 12 percent that are
obese; and
WHEREAS, overweight and obese children are at greater risk for adverse health consequences including
type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, certain cancers, asthma,
low self-esteem, and depressions; and
WHEREAS, the amount of preventable death caused by poor diet and sedentary activity levels, both
contributors to childhood obesity, ranks second only to preventable deaths caused by tobacco; and
WHEREAS, obesity is now one of the most common disqualifiers for military service; and
WHEREAS, individual effort alone is insufficient to combat obesity’s rising rate, and societal and
environmental changes are necessary to support individual efforts to make healthier choices; and
WHEREAS, local public and private organizations in Missoula have formed a leadership group to address
childhood obesity (See Exhibit A).
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Missoula hereby recognizes that obesity is a
serious public health threat to Missoula’s children. In light of the foregoing considerations, the City of
Missoula commits to do all it can to address this problem; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Missoula join the efforts of other municipalities across the
nation in promoting health activity and nutrition among its children through the national “Let’s Move”
initiative; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Missoula City Council designates Alderwoman Caitlin Copple, or
the City Council’s designee, as its representative to the “Let’s Move! Missoula” leadership group.
