VARSITY GAMES Soccer Rules and Drills SOCCER RULES – THE PRIME TIME WAY Positioning • 8 on 8: Peer Pair at each position • Goalie has to have the motor skills necessary to play the role • Only the Goalies are allowed in the Goalie Box • Defenders are not allowed to cross midfield • Players on offense (forwards) are not allowed to cross midfield • Midfielders can go on either side of the field – both offense and defense • Substitutions – all athletes rotate to the position ahead of them (except goalie) Coaches Guard Athletes • Allows the Coaches on the field to control the game – position your Athlete (intentionally create space) • Coaches play “Shadow” defense to create feeling of a “real” game • Guarding Athletes gives the Coaches the chance to keep other Athletes from double teaming a less-skilled player • This allows Coaches to gauge the skill level of each Athlete and guard accordingly • Coaches can’t steal the ball or intercept a pass. If a Coach guards a Coach, he or she is not to steal the ball – the opposing Coach will be looking to pass to create an opportunity for an Athlete Whistle automatically means give the ball to the referee • Whistle blown after every made goal • Ball given to referee to let defense set up • Coaches can’t score goals • Fouls called to protect players • Coaches take all throw-ins SOCCER DRILLS Practice 1 = Assess / Practice 2 = Cluster / Practices 3-5 = Scrimmage Warm Up • Find/Identify their athlete creating Peer Pairs within a team concept • Remind Peer Pairs to stay together during all drills. Begin with jogging to a spot and back. Passing Stationary Passing Drill • Place one cone 5 yards away from another cone with the Athlete behind one cone and the Coach behind the other • Have the Coach and Athlete pass the ball back and forth • Emphasize stopping the ball before passing it back and using the inside of the foot to pass Dribbling • Separate two cones by 10 yards with the Athlete behind one cone and the Coach behind the other • The Athlete will dribble to the Coach’s cone, stop the ball, and give the ball to the Coach • The Coach will dribble to the opposite cone, stop the ball, and pass the ball back to the athlete • Emphasize short kicks that control the ball and stopping the ball with their feet • Athletes and Coaches can go at same time if the Athlete needs the additional support. Shooting • Athlete and Coach are in two separate lines about 10 yards from the goal • Moving towards the goal, the Coach will pass to the Athlete, the Athlete will pass back to the Coach, the Coach will pass it back to the Athlete, and the Athlete will shoot on goal • Emphasize running while passing and shooting on goal This document contains information that is confidential and proprietary to Team Prime Time, Inc.
