FACULTY RESEARCH
GRANT –
STRATEGIC PLANBASED FUNDING
2017-2018 CFA CONTINUING FACULTY RESEARCH GRANT APPLICATION
PREFACE to the Grant Application
Continuing tenured and tenure-track faculty, who have completed their second year at LMU, are eligible for the 2017-2018
Continuing1 CFA Faculty Research Grant. CFA Faculty Research Grants are given in support of original scholarship (e.g.
research, writing, creative work). Preference will be given to projects that will prepare the faculty member to pursue ongoing
or more complex scholarship and/or to fund work that is a good candidate for future external grant support.
There are 2 variations of CFA Faculty Research Grants: “Open Funding” and “Strategic Plan-Based Funding.”. These 2
variations on a single grant will rotate every other year. For 2017-2018, faculty will apply for “Strategic Plan-Based
Funding,” which prioritizes those grants that address issues central to the CFA Strategic Plan 2013-18.
(http://cfa.lmu.edu/about/cfastrategicplan2013-2018/) “Open Funding” will be available in 2018-2019. “Open Funding”
considers all original scholarship on equal footing.
Please Note: the CFA Continuing Faculty Research Grants (under either variation) must culminate in a project suitable for
professional distribution (e.g. scholarly and creative work that is published or made public through print distribution and/or
presentation in a public forum) with evidence of accomplishment included in the required Continuing CFA Research Grants
Outcome Report.
Please follow the grant application procedures in this document paying careful attention to key dates. The Proposal must be
signed by the Chair by January 17, 2017, before the applicant submits it to the Dean. Submission of applications to the
Dean will be accepted up to the deadline date, January 25, 2017. Should you not be able to download or print out the
application from the website, please contact Pamela Willis at [email protected] for assistance. Applications
that are incomplete, late, or do not conform to the printed guidelines and instructions will not be considered.
Applicants who are awarded a CFA Grant or Fellowship 2017-2018 also must complete an Outcome Report and participate in
Talks about Teaching and Scholarship during the following academic year.
FOR QUESTIONS please contact:
Procedural and content-based questions: Associate Dean, Judith Scalin – [email protected] Also content-based
questions: Professor Katharine Noon, Department of Theatre Arts and Dance – [email protected] (2017-2018 Grant
and Fellowship information resource faculty member)

GRANT DISBURSEMENT OPTIONS
– (if awarded, select time period most
applicable to the timeline of the work)
There are 3 options. Please check one of these options.
Option One: Course Remission: (select one) ⃝ FALL 2017 or ⃝ SPRING 2018
Applies to one course during the selected semester with the prior approval of the Chair. Chair’s initial signifies
approval.
OR
Option Two: Payout option: (select one) ⃝ SUMMER 2017 or ⃝ FALL 2017 or ⃝ SPRING 2018
This is paid through payroll as one check and it is subject to all payroll tax withholdings as required by law. According to IRS regulations,
grants are considered taxable income, and will be reported as such for the year it is received. With the Payout Option, all purchases made
remain the property of the individual professor and neither an accounting nor receipts are required to be submitted to the University.
OR
Option Three: Research Related Expense Funding: ⃝ SUMMER 2017 or ⃝ FALL 2017 or ⃝ SPRING 2018
Includes travel and other expenses and must be spent in the spring or summer semester immediately following the application deadline.
1. If this option is chosen for the summer or fall semester, be cognizant that expense receipts must be
submitted for reimbursement via an expense report in CONCUR to utilize these funds. There are no cash
advances related to research grant expenditures. A full accounting of all valid expenses must be submitted no
later than November 15th of the fiscal year. These receipts are treated as University expenses and the grant
is not considered income to the individual professor as long as all receipts are deemed appropriate and
adhere to strict LMU guidelines. If this option is chosen for the spring semester, a full accounting of all
valid expenses must be submitted no later than April 16th. (If that date falls on the weekend, due date is
the following Monday).
2. Failure to submit the original receipts for expenses by the deadline will result in the grant becoming taxable
income and you will be given a 1099 form.
3. Any purchases made using the expense fund become the property of LMU, i.e., equipment purchases such
as laptops, cameras, etc., must be turned in to the Budget Manager by the November 15th or April 16th
deadline depending on the option you selected. (If that date falls on the weekend, due date is the
following Monday).
4. Additional paperwork is required by each Dean regarding budget approval.

Human Subjects Review Board (HSRB), which requires approval on or before
the start date of my project. (If you believe that your project is exempt from Human

If my project uses animal subjects, I agree to submit a protocol for the
Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), which requires
approval on or before the start date of my project.
I understand that funding of a CFA Continuing Faculty Research Grant requires
