Face-Off! An Integer Card Game One way to help your students increase their speed and accuracy when solving integer problems is by playing “Face-Off." In five minutes, you and your students can make the game together and begin an enjoyable “study session” – one that may include prizes! What You Need: 2 colors of Cardstock Scissors Print integers 0 to -20 on one of the colored cardstock Print integers 0 to 20 on the other colored cardstock What You Do: 1. Shuffle both decks. Deal out the cards between 2 players. 2. Now it’s time to “face-off”. Each player lays down a card from the top of their decks. 3. The player to correctly add the two integers keeps the cards. 4. Continue playing until all cards are used. The player with the most cards wins! Modification #1: Next time around, players subtract or multiply instead of add. Modification #2: Player 1 should lay down the top 2 cards from his deck face up. Player 1 adds the 2 cards, paying attention to positive and negative signs. Player 2 should do the same with their 2 cards. Compare answers. The player with the highest answer keeps all 4 cards (place in a separate pile). Tips: Emphasize speed and accuracy when making and playing the game. Decide on a fun “prize” for the winner. Never underestimate the motivational power of a small reward!
