Hay on Earth Festival 2010 Green Dragons Den. Report. Supported by Realise (Europe) Ltd and TYF Consulting This report is from the Green Dragon’s Den. For the four days of Hay on Earth 2010, WAG sponsored a competition to reveal the best Project each day and awarded £10,000 each day to support the winning project. The public were invited to view the projects and give feedback on the projects and (on Friday) vote for their favourite. During the final presentations, the panel (Dragons) voted on each project against the three criteria outlined in the entry form. The following graphs show the results for each day (except Tuesday when the voting was conducted by show of (public) hands and on the decision of the Dragons. Andy Middleton from TYF and Steve Bather from Realisegroup hosted the workshops and managed on behalf of WAG. Group Engagement Tools (www.realisegroup.com) were deployed to support participants to capture and share their thoughts and feedback and to support the voting process. Public feedback on the Thursday Business and enterprise projects VINTAGE VISION Terrific idea to use vintage clothes to recycle rather than buy new clothes and also teach younger people how to adapt clothes for their use. Also oral history aspect of talking to older women about their clothes. Good luck in the enterprise and hope you win. POINTS IN FAVOUR: Giving women the experience of entrepreneurship; giving graduates a transitional experience into work; establishing an informal women's network which can be of personal benefit to those involved; giving volunteers an opportunity to grow in confidence and ambition; diverting waste from landfill. o have you thought about becoming accredited as a training supplier? Allowing you to charge for certain courses and bring in more revenue? Excellent idea Hi it's a brilliant idea getting girls interested in this through our favourite thingCLOTHES. i think that it’s a brilliant idea to have a way of looking after the environment and involving fashion in it too! it’s a great way to capture young girls and its also a good idea because you can redesign your old clothes and pass them on to somebody else so they can make use of them. it’s also a great idea for helping the environment because it means that less landfills are going to be filling up with clothes. CRUCORNEY ENERGY GROUP GLO Y GOEDWIG how much wood can you use each year How do you identify woodlands and work with landowners to come on board to your scheme? How much wood would each individual farmer potentially pass on to you? POINTS IN FAVOUR: Makes good use of an element of forest extraction which would otherwise not be commercially viable; prevents imports of charcoal; encourages people to use wood fuel, which is renewable. which was the permitions or gubernamental authorized to rich to made legaly that and if was required any How long and easily was to start to going on Could this be used in other places? CYNLLUN GWRESOGI DINAS MAWDDWY WOOD HEATING SYSTEM Do will you overcome the technicalities of the UK planning system? Have you had any opposition to your scheme and if so how have you overcome this? How do you deal with the drop in energy from the source to the consumer? POINTS IN FAVOUR: A genuine community initiative enganging a whole community of 100 households; provides the community with energy from a renewable source; if the Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme goes ahead, the scheme will be genuinely sustainable; will create a job; has the support of public sector agencies; likely to be a goer. Green Dragons Den, Hay on Earth 2010 Page 5 Supported by Realise (Europe) Ltd and TYF Consulting Nice :) Seems like really good idea that could be far more widespread FSC CONSUMER AWARENESS they need more focus on a specific and integrated benefit to the end consumer like Fair Trade This project could benefit from identifying specific benefits that FSC and sustainable woodland make to people in Wales . If the biomass boiler is to be a central hub for the community how do you tackle the loss of energy in the pipework between the boiler and properties as this is simple inefficiency. With the organic, free range and local food movements becoming so strong so quickly, why has forestry been left behind? How do we overcome our reliance on cheap imports of wood? POINTS IN FAVOUR: A really important initiative which is currently run on a shoestring; has far-reaching implications for growers and intermediary merchants; its success as an initiative depends on customer recognition, so putting money into widening this recognition would be money well-spent. I was surprised that I had so little awareness of what the FSC symbol meant despite being fairly green aware This could be improved as loads of kids my age know about fairtrade and buy their stuff but they don't know much about you. its a good idea but many people dont really know about your company get and what you do so maybe you could advertise your company is different ways so that people will know about you and know about what you are aiming for. FSC is a really good idea and you should listen to them The water turbine is a great creation because it's a great way to get electricity for the houses GREENING TOURISM Useful idea if it could lead to more information on sustainability being provided to consumers POINTS IN FAVOUR: The idea sounds right i.e. if you can increase the critical mass of the Green Tourism product in Pembrokeshire, this will in turn attract more tourists, and at the same time the operators will reduce their costs and become more viable. The reduction in carbon arising from the measures taken will contribute to mitigating climate change. good idea we need more eco tourism Really good idea to show eco business can actually be more profitable THE GREEN VALLEYS CASH COW FOR EVERY COMMUNITY Do you have problems finding suitable sites on which to build community energy technologies? good idea :) Another simple and profitable idea proving that green can be good for communities and business POINTS IN FAVOUR: The Green Valley model of working is an really good one and extending it to areas outside its birthplace in Brecon will bring benefits to all parts of Green Dragons Den, Hay on Earth 2010 Page 6 Supported by Realise (Europe) Ltd and TYF Consulting Wales; it empowers communities, but also offers them initial advice and excellent prospects of being sustainable.
