We have a wonderfully talented music teacher, Kerry, who is a qualified Kindermusiek teacher. Each

Children take home a library book once a week and you will be encouraged to support this activity by
donating a new book each year at our Information Meeting in January. Children need to purchase a
„Library Bag‟ from the school which will have your child‟s name on it. The library‟s policy is no bag = no
book.
Themes:
Each week we focus on a different theme. For individual class „Show and Tell‟ we encourage you to

Objectives:
We are committed to:








make each child‟s school experience a positive one
stimulate each child‟s thought processes to achieve greater understanding, awareness and curiosity
provide opportunities for self-expression for each child through language, drama, art, music and
play
provide an environment and activities that promote optimum physical development
promote each child‟s free artistic development and creativity
provide diverse media for creative expression
develop the ability to think logically and make associations
introduce the use and need for numbers in daily life
encourage each child to play and work well, both independently and in groups.
GRADE 0
In Grade 0 our primary objective is to prepare our learners for Grade 1 and formal schooling. We follow
the national curriculum and incorporate the following areas of study into the weekly schedule:
Literacy: We follow the “Letterland” literacy program and oral literacy in the form of communication
skills, phonics, singing, basic reading etc and written literacy in the form of recognition and naming
common letters of the alphabet such as the child‟s name, letter formation, use of letters from their own
name, awareness of left to right, top to bottom, copying print etc.
Numeracy: Numbers – counting, recognition of numbers, simple problem solving, patterns, space and
shapes, sorting and comparing, building 3D, measurement, sequencing, handling of data, gathering
and recording.
Science and Discovery: Once or twice a week in the form of little experiments in the fields of science,
biology, history and geography.
Life Skills: Health and social care, personal and physical development (gross and fine motor skills).
Art and Culture: Music and Dance.
Technology: Use of equipment (microscopes, baking, sharpeners, IPads).
Perceptual Work: Can be incorporated into numeracy, sequencing, visual tracking, spatial awareness,
construction, etc.
Work books: a variety of books are used to formalise all of the above.
ILLNESS:
We cannot keep every cough and cold out of playschool but we are not allowed to have sick children
at school. You will be contacted to collect your child for any of the following:





Temperature
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Any contagious illness
Injuries at school
This is for the benefit of all the children. If you are unsure whether your child is sick or not, please err on
the side of caution and keep him/her at home. It is unfair to place that responsibility on your child, who
usually wants to attend school.
We do not administer any medication unless authorised by the parent
5
DISCIPLINE
In order for everyone to work and play together, our discipline code is as follows:
1)
No bullying
2)
No biting
3)
No pinching or hitting
4)
No bad language or swearing
5)
No showing disrespect for adults and their peers.
We believe in as few rules as possible but our 5 Rules are consistently enforced, but in a kind and loving
way. When small children step out of their immediate environment, they need to be helped to share,
socialize, wait their turn and take responsibility for themselves.
There is no smacking at Humpty Dumpty Playschool! We use the method of „time out‟ on the „naughty
chair‟. If we are inside, the child is in the room with us. If outside, the child is outside with us. This gives
the child time to reflect on what he/she has done and it is a time for the educator to explain how not to
make the same mistakes again. „Time-out‟ is usually double their age, e.g.
2 yrs: 4-5 mins / 3-4 yrs: 6-8 mins / 5-6yrs: 10-12 mins.
Should a child consistently fail to adhere to our discipline code we reserve the right to ask the child‟s
parents to find an alternative school. This shall be at the sole discretion of the school. We strongly
believe in preserving a harmonious safe environment for all of our children.
TERM ACTIVITIES
Parent Participation:
We welcome a high degree of parent participation and liaison. Reports are issued in June and
November. A half-hour time slot is available to parents to discuss their child‟s development. Please feel
free to make an appointment with your child‟s teacher and/or principal to discuss anything you wish to
raise. It is important for us all to maintain a close relationship at all times as we have many things in
common, one of them being YOUR CHILD.
Puppet Shows:
We have regular puppet shows that are educational and entertaining.
Outings:
We aim to have 1 to 2 per year, where we encourage parents to join us for a morning together. Such
outings normally fit in with our themes at school, e.g. the Zoo, Olivedale Hospital, Botanical Gardens,
Delta Park Environmental Centre, Montecasino Bird Park, the theatre etc.
Educational Visits to the School:
We also encourage visits by FANSA (Fauna & Flora & Natural Sciences Advancement), the Travelling
Zoo, etc., to ensure a variety of hands-on learning experiences. All of the above are costed separately
on your monthly invoice – (No profit is made by the School).
Easter Morning:
Parents or Grandparents are invited to come and celebrate Easter with us. This is an opportunity to
listen to your children sing and participate in an Easter celebration.
Grandparents’ Day:
Once a year we invite the children‟s Grandparents to join us for a morning tea to see their
Grandchildren‟s school, meet their Teachers and listen to them sing. This is a treat for both children and
Grandparents.
6
Spring Morning:
This is usually held on the last day of the third term and takes on various forms. In the past we have held
a “spring hat parade”, a “Mommy & me” picnic and a sing-a-long show, to which you the parents or
Grandparents will be invited.
Sports day/ school fund raiser:
This is our schools one and only fundraiser of the year. We organize a fun filled morning of races for the
children, who are sponsored for participation.
Annual Concert:
This is definitely a highlight of our year. Both children and staff do their best to present a memorable
occasion for you and your families. A small concert fee is charged for costume hire and running costs.

Humpty Dumpty has a website (www.humptydumptyplayschool.co.za). Please refer to it for the
term planners, calendar etc. We upload photos of the various functions, outings and shows that
take place at Humpty Dumpty. For this reason there may be some pictures of your child/children on
the website. If you have a problem with this, please let Holly in the office know. By signing this
prospectus you give consent to any possible photos which are placed on the website.


Humpty Dumpty Playschool is a private playschool and as such may request parent/s to remove
their child from the school at any time should we deem it necessary and which shall be decided at
the sole discretion of the school.
We look forward to a happy and enriching time with you and your child.
