Palm Beach State College Curriculum Committee Minutes September 26, 2013 FA - Possible Financial Aid Action Warranted Welcome and Introductions-Dr. Ginger Pedersen, Dean of Curriculum and Educational Technology I. Approval of March 28, 2013 Minutes, April 18, 2013 E-vote, May 2, 2013 E-vote and June 20, 2013 E-vote Discussion: None Data sources consulted: Minutes, E-votes Action: Motion to Approve-P. Holmes-De Graw; 2nd-J. Mahmoud APPROVED II. For Your Information (For added FYI items see attached FYI agenda) Change to Curriculum Committee Meeting Calendar A change to the Palm Beach State Registration Calendar is in the final stages of approval. Effective fall 2014 (20151), students will be able to register for classes starting in April 2014. This action affects the publication of the 2014-2015 College Catalog and in turn affects the Curriculum Committee meeting calendar. To accommodate faculty in the development of curriculum on this accelerated timeline, it has been decided that an additional Curriculum Committee meeting will be added in January 2014, the February meeting will be cancelled and the April meeting that had been offered in the past will be reinstated. (See calendar below.) Curriculum actions proposed through the January 30th Curriculum Committee meeting will be included in the 2014-2015 catalog; those submitted and approved at the March and April meetings can be effective Fall term (20151) and posted to the Area of Study website but will not be included in the catalog until the 2015-2016 publication. +If the Completed Curriculum Proposal Is Rec'd By: Day Date Time Thursday 9/5/13 3:00 p.m. Thursday 10/3/13 3:00 p.m. Thursday *10/31/13 3:00 p.m. Thursday *1/2/14 3:00 p.m. Thursday 12/18/14 3:00 p.m. Thursday 1/9/14 3:00 p.m. Thursday 2/6/14 3:00 p.m. Thursday ^3/10/14 3:00 p.m. Thursday 4/3/14 3:00 p.m. It will be Reviewed at the Curriculum Committee Day Date Time Thursday 9/26/13 3:00 p.m. Thursday 10/24/13 3:00 p.m. Thursday 11/21/13 3:00 p.m. Thursday 1/23/14 3:00 p.m. Thursday 1/16/14 3:00 p.m. Thursday 1/30/14 3:00 p.m. Thursday 2/27/14 3:00 p.m. Thursday 3/27/14 3:00 p.m. Thursday 4/24/14 3 :00 p.m. Effective Catalog / Area of Student Placement 2014-2015 Catalog/2014-2015 Area of Study 2014-2015 Catalog/2014-2015 Area of Study 2014-2015 Catalog/2014-2015 Area of Study 2014-2015 Catalog/2014-2015 Area of Study 2014-2015 Catalog/2014-2015 Area of Study 2014-2015 Catalog/2014-2015 Area of Study 2015-2016 Catalog/2014-2015 Area of Study 2015-2016 Catalog/2014-2015 Area of Study III. Justification: BAS Information Management program has two concentrations; Database Administration (T801) and Security & Network Assurance (IT Forensics), (T803). At present, both tracks require a shared capstone course, ISM4330. This course configuration does not adequately meet the needs of both groups of students. The BAS faculty requests the separation of the capstone courses by discipline-one for Database Administration students and one for Security and Network Assurance (IT Forensics) students. Discussion: Dr. Richard Chance reviewed the need for the splitting of the existing capstone experience course now used for the Database Administration and Security and Network Assurance (IT Forensics) in the BAS in Information Management degree into two courses. The original capstone course created for these two disciplines does not adequately address the learning outcomes of the Security and Network Assurance concentration. It was apparent to the faculty that a second course was needed to better address the Security concentration learning outcomes. The Bachelor Program Faculty Cluster realized there was insufficient interest and demand for this program of study and voted to remove it from the Palm Beach State course offerings. Discussion: Dean Anita Kaplan explained that the Public Safety Concentration of the BAS in Supervision and Management was one of the first concentration developed for the program but when evaluating data mining of registration and completion numbers it was found that there was little interest in this program; many cancelled courses of fewer initially had less than five students enrolled. Ed Mueller asked how the students would be contacted about this program deletion. Dr. Kaplan indicated once approved, this information would be posted to the Bachelor Program website and each student enrolled would be sent a letter explaining the teach-out process. The teach-out process includes keeping program courses active until all currently enrolled students have finished. Data sources consulted: Curriculum Support Documents Action: Motion to Approve-E. Developmental Education Courses New Course Effective January 2013 MAT0022 Developmental Algebra (4 institutional credits, 64 contact hours, selected PERT Math Placement and Math Diagnostic Test scores required, Coreq of SLS1501,$25 special fee) 4 credits Justification: In order to comply with Senate Bill 1720, Palm Beach State College has revised the developmental education course offerings. Developmental education courses are to be accelerated, compressed and/or modularized. MAT0022 is the first of these courses to be developed effective January 2014. For this course nonexempt students will need to take the PERT Placement and the PERT math diagnostic test. Discussion: Dr. Pedersen explained this course development would offer as a replacement course for MAT0018 Developmental Math 1 and MAT0028 Developmental Math 2 in response to the Senate Bill 1720 requirements. Nonexempt student who test into development math (about 10-15% of the College population) would have the opportunity to take this course. The courses being replaced will continue to be offered through Summer (20143) for those student currently enrolled in Developmental Math who will want to qualify to take MAT1033. Additional Development Math courses will be developed in the Fall (20151). Data sources consulted: Curriculum Support Documents Action: Motion to Approve-K. Hopkins; 2nd -V. Slesinger APPROVED D. These revisions reflect changing technology and the shift from film screen radiography to filmless/digital imaging methods.
