Philosophy



Emphasize sportsmanship, participation, and
safety.
Provide a structured opportunity for the kids to
learn and enjoy themselves. Strive for
teamwork, sportsmanship, and a positive
experience for all of the students.
We like winning…but it is not a priority over
sportsmanship, participation, and safety at the
middle school level.

Before the Season
Forms
- PIAA Forms (Sections 1-4) if this is your first sport of the
year.
- PIAA Form (Section 5 only) if you have played a sport
this year and have already submitted Sections 1-4.
- PIAA Form (Section 6) if you have played a sport this
year and were injured while playing that sport.




Strive to accommodate all students who want to
participate.
At times, a selection process needs to be
implemented to ensure a safe and appropriate
athletic experience for those participating.
Coaches will provide criteria for evaluation and
collect data to support selection decisions.

Wrestling




No selection process for wrestling.
Weight Certification after school.
Parent permission required to test.
Information about Weight Certification can
be found on the VFMS athletics page.
Basketball




Due to the heavy interest in basketball,
we have to initiate a selection process.
Coaches will share criteria for evaluating
players.
Tryouts will be during the week of 11/28.
Try-outs typically last 3 days. Specific
tryout dates will be available next week.
Schedules/Schedule Changes





Initial schedule posted on VFMS Website
Coaches will provide copies to players
Game cancellations will be announced at
school and posted to the VFMS Blog site
Coaches will inform students if/when
make-up games will be scheduled.
Every attempt will be made to reschedule
games that are cancelled.
Eligibility


Eligibility
Checked every Friday during season
Failing two or more subjects = ineligible
Student will conference with AD on Friday to be
informed if ineligible.
Student is ineligible for the following week of play
If failing two or more at end of marking period =
ineligible for first four weeks of new marking period.
Accumulation of eight discipline points = behaviorally
ineligible for two weeks.
Any detention = missed practice/game that day
Safety



Fully stocked medical kits with each team
Athletic Trainers available for consult for
all sports
Coaches have contact information and cell
phones to contact Athletic Director,
Building Administrators, Athletic Trainers,
Parents, Transportation, and 911.
