States of Matter Notes

Plasma
Solid
Liquid
 A solid is matter that has a definite shape
and volume.
 Particles in a solid are packed closely
together.
 Particles vibrate in place, but do not have
enough energy to move out of their fixed
position.
 A liquid is matter that has a definite volume but
not a definite shape.
 If you pour a liquid from one container to
another, the liquid will form to the container,
but the amount stays the same.
 Particles in a liquid move more freely than a
solid but it doesn’t have enough energy to
move far.
Gas
 Gas is matter that has no definite shape
or volume.
 Particles in a gas are far apart and move
at high speeds in all directions.
Plasma
 Plasma occurs at extremely high
temperatures.
 Found in stars, lightening, and neon
lights.
Why does matter change state?
Atoms and molecules of substances move because they
have energy. As the amount of energy increases, so
does the movement of molecules! If a substance loses
energy, the molecules move more slowly.
Changes between a solid and gas state
Changes between a liquid and gas state
This is called sublimation- skips the liquid state
Vaporization and Condensation
Changes between a solid and a liquid state
1. Melting occurs when a solid absorbs thermal energy and its
temperature rises.
2. Freezing occurs as the liquid cools, it loses thermal energy
and the particles slow down and come closer together.
