Course Description:
One-trimester course, exploring the application of micro and macro economic principles
to managerial and business decisions. The course can be taken as an introductory course
or as a refresher course to the main micro and macro economic concepts, particularly
those related to firms and markets.

Course Content:
Basic Market Analysis. Consumer behaviour. Quantitative Demand Analysis. Market
Structures (Perfect Competition, Monopoly, Monopolistic Competition, Oligopoly).
Understanding the main economic indicators. Business Cycles and Stabilisation Policies –
impacts on business activity. Structural Trends in the Global Economy: Main Impacts on
Business Activity.

Course Objectives:
The course is an introduction, or a refresher, to the basic quantitative tools of
microeconomic analysis of markets and of firm behaviour under different market
structures.
At the end of the course, students should also be able to understand the broader
economic environment where firms operate (e.g. macro environment). Students are also
expected to learn how to use micro and macroeconomic principles to inform managerial
and business decisions.

The Final Grade (0-20) will be determined according to the following weights:
Final Exam: 80%

Biography:
Carlos Andrade (47) is Chief Economist of Novo Banco. Previously, he was Chief
Economist of Banco Espírito Santo, responsible for the Economic Research Area of BES
Group (2002-2014). He has had short term collaborations with the Bank of Portugal (199495) and the Ministry of Finance (1993-94). He has collaborated as a researcher with the
Center for Applied Studies at the Portuguese Catholic University, participating in projects
related to Education, Health, Social Security and Macroeconomic Research/Analysis
(1999-2002). He has a regular collaboration with newspapers and magazines with opinion
articles on economics and economic policy, and participates in several conferences and
presentations, in Portugal and abroad.
