The Literacy Framework is broken down into the following areas: Oracy – Speaking | Listening | Collaboration and Discussion Reading – Reading Strategies | Comprehension | Response and Analysis Writing – Meaning, Purpose and Readers | Structure and Organisation | Language | Handwriting, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling An example of how these skills could be embedded into the broader curriculum would be; through our Write Dance programme, where our children develop their writing skills during creative and physical development learning. The only area in literacy to be assessed during the National Testing in May 2014 will be reading and Year 2 families will be informed of their child’s results with their annual report in the summer term. The Numeracy Framework is broken down into the following areas: Developing Numerical Reasoning Using Number Skills Using Measuring Skills Using Data Skills An example of how these skills could be embedded into the broader curriculum would be; through Forest School, where children develop their measuring skills in distance, capacity and temperature, whilst exploring knowledge and understanding of the world in a real life context. During National Testing in May 2014 the numeracy test will be split into two papers: numerical procedures and numerical reasoning and Year 2 families will be informed of their child’s results with their annual report in the summer term. National Literacy and Numeracy Framework Explained The National Literacy and Numeracy Framework What is it? In addition to Religious Education, the 7 Statutory Areas of Learning in the Foundation Phase Framework are: 1. Personal and Social Development, Well-being and Cultural Diversity 2. Language, Literacy and Communication Skills 3. Mathematical Development 4. Welsh Language Development 5. Knowledge and Understanding of the World 6. Physical Development 7. Creative Development Here at Malpas Church in Wales Infant School we believe that developing literacy and numeracy skills are essential in order for every child to reach their potential. We ensure that teaching literacy and numeracy skills are embedded in all 7 Foundation Phase Areas of Learning and are not just taught and applied in Maths, English and Welsh lessons. This broader approach of teaching literacy and numeracy principles across the whole curriculum, allows the children to develop the skill of applying these principles to all areas of their learning. This broadens and enriches their learning experiences and prepares them for their future, by teaching them lifelong skills. At Malpas Church in Wales Infant School we ensure that on a daily basis children work with an adult within a differentiated group to practice, develop, refine and apply such skills. The National Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF) and National Testing have been developed and implemented to help achieve the Welsh Government’s aim, that children of Wales are able to develop excellent literacy and numeracy skills during their time at school. The LNF is primarily a planning tool and its key aims are to: help drive up literacy and numeracy standards in children, by providing learners with opportunities to apply literacy and numeracy skills across the curriculum provide schools with national expectations for literacy and numeracy for learners aged 5-14, broken down by year group allow teachers to continually assess children’s progress in accordance with the LNF, so that an individual’s future learning can be tailored to their ability. The key aims of the National Testing from Year 2 upwards are to: help determine individual children’s progress in literacy and numeracy and to provide annual reports to parents/carers based on the testing, so that teachers, learners and parents/carers are all clear of how learners are progressing and what are the next steps paint a clearer picture of how children are performing nationally.
