THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC CONFERENCES The Middle Atlantic Conferences, regarded as one of the strongest NCAA Division III basketball conferences in the nation, underwent considerable change in the recent years. In 1999, the presidents of the MAC colleges announced the league's reorganization into two eight-team conferences for most sports - the Freedom Conference and the Commonwealth Conference. Both conferences operate under the umbrella of the Middle Atlantic Conferences. In basketball, both the winners of the Freedom and Commonwealth conferences gain an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. MAC operates under the leadership of an executive committee consisting of college presidents from each conference. The current MAC structuring is as follows: FREEDOM CONFERENCE Delaware Valley College DeSales University Drew University FDU-Madison King's College Lycoming College University of Scranton Wilkes University COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE Albright College Elizabethtown College Juniata College Lebanon Valley College Messiah College Moravian College Susquehanna University Widener University 2004-05 MAC FREEDOM MEN'S STANDINGS (Final) Freedom Conference Team W DeSales 11 King's 11 Scranton 10 Wilkes 8 Lycoming 8 FDU-Florham 4 Delaware Valley 4 Drew 0 L 3 3 4 6 6 10 10 14 League Pct. .786 .786 .714 .571 .571 .286 .286 .000 PF 75.3 77.6 71.4 71.5 69.2 69.3 67.6 53.6 PA 61.8 66.0 66.1 67.2 69.2 74.1 76.9 74.1 W 20 24 20 15 17 10 9 2 L 8 6 7 10 8 15 16 23 Overall Pct. ISH Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Cheryl Ish enters her 12th year and serves as King's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation. One of the hardest-working, most respected figures on campus, she is involved in all aspects of the athletic department at King's. She served as King's assistant director of athletics for 10 years prior to her promotion. She also doubles as King's head field hockey coach. Ish arrived at King's in 1994 to assume the position of assistant director of athletics/head field hockey coach just two years after the program was introduced as a varsity sport at the college and a year after gaining MAC status. During this time, Ish has posted a 112-109-2 mark and was named Freedom Conference "Coach of the Year" in 1996 and 2005. She led King's to the Freedom Conference championship game in 2003 and 2005. In 2005, she led King's to a program-best 15-5 record as the Lady Monarchs finished the season ranked 20th nationally in Division III. The Lady Monarchs have won at least 10 games every year since 1999. During her time at King's, Ish has coached 48 players who have earned MAC Freedom League all-star status and four National Field Hockey Coaches Association Regional All-Americans. Her teams have also been know for their academic excellence as 75 of her players have been named to the MAC All-Academic Team Ish was a three-time NCAA Division III All-American during her playing career at Salisbury State University where she guided the team to four consecutive national tournament appearances. In 1988, she led Salisbury to a 16-3-3 record and a third-place in the national tournament, while advancing to the quarterfinal round in each of her final three seasons. Ish, who was named most valuable player of the Eastern States Athletic Conference in 1989, concluded her collegiate career ranked second among Salisbury's all-time leaders in both goals scored (60) and total points (131). Ish also stands second with five goals scored in a single game. She was additionally honored as a Hanes NCAA "Woman of the Year" nominee in 1992. An outstanding all-around athlete, Ish was also a four-year letter winner in both track and field and lacrosse. She earned her bachelor of arts degree from Salisbury in 1992. Ish came to King's following two years at Smith College where she earned her master's degree in exercise and sports studies, while serving as an assistant coach. In 1993, she helped Smith to a 15-3 record and a second-place finish in the NCAA Division III national tournament. The 2005-06 King's College men's basketball team will have a tough act to follow after last season's squad enjoyed the most successful year in program history. A year ago, the Monarchs posted a school-record 24-6 mark, won the MAC Freedom Conference championship, and came within one victory of reaching the NCAA Division III "Final Four". The Monarchs will face the challenging task of replacing three veteran starters, including point-guard Landon Gabriel, center Marty O'Hora, and allAmerican forward Brian Horgan. While the Monarchs do have holes to fill, there are a number of experienced players back who fifth-year head coach J.P. Andrejko feels will enable King's to remain a highly-competitive team in the conference. Heading the list of veterans are two returning starters - sophomore power forward Vince Scalzo and sophomore guard Jamie Cousart. The 6-4 Scalzo averaged 10.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per-game as a rookie, shooting 55.2 (106-192) percent from the field and 78.7 (74-94) percent from the foul line. The 6-3 Cousart, meanwhile, averaged 6.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per-game. He has the ability to play both point-guard and shooting guard. Returning players expected to step in and fill major roles include 6-3 senior forward and team captain Thomas Moore, one of the most athletic and versatile players on the team. Last year Moore came off the bench to average 5.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists. Another top returnee is 6-6, 220-pound sophomore center John Soboleski who averaged 7.5 points and 4.2 rebounds. Also returning is 6-3 sophomore guard-forward Jim Welsh, a solid longrange shooter who can also handle the ball. Welsh averaged 6.0 points per-game as a key reserve and connected on 46 three-pointers, shooting 43.0 percent from beyond the arc. The Monarchs also return another outstanding three-point shooter in 5-11 sophomore Jared Black who is expected to see increased time this season. Vince Sobocinski, a 6-3 guard-forward, saw limited action last year but averaged a team-best 19.0 points during King's three-game summer trip to Ireland. Junior Brendan O'Malley, a 6-1 guard, looks to make a bigger impact while sophomore Nate Alcott, another 6-1 guard, moves up to the varsity after playing on the jayvee team last year. Experienced inside depth looms as the team's biggest question mark. Dan Bowden, a 6-8 sophomore, and 6-5 junior Dave King saw limited time a year ago. Adam Fedorko, a 6-7 senior, returns after missing last year due to a battle with Crohn's Disease and must regain his timing, strength, and conditioning. Newcomers looking to make an impact include 5-10 sophomore point-guard Kofi Dwebeng, a transfer from Widener University where he played in 23 games as a rookie. Dwebeng is expected to contribute immediately as he brings quickness and savvy to the position. Three freshmen guards adding depth in the backcourt include 5-11 Sean Kelly, 6-0 Shawn Swim, and 6-1 Eric Krwawecz. In the paint, new players include 6-5 Ian Gilmartin and 6-8 Phillip Stroup. 10. 2005-06 MONARCH BASKETBALL ADAM FEDORKO • #54 Senior, 6-7, 220 Lbs. • Center Richboro, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep Making an inspiring comeback after missing the entire 2004-05 season battling Crohn's Disease, an affliction to the digestive season which caused Fedorko to drop to 165 pounds and spend over a month in a hospital ...
