A Word from our Sponsor Federal budget highlights—Contributing the proceeds of property downsizing to super The government proposes that from 1 July 2018, people aged 65 and over will be able to make a non-concessional contribution into their super of up to $300 000 from the proceeds of selling their home, irrespective of their age, work status or total super balance. Both members of a couple will also be able to take advantage of this measure for the same home, meaning $600 000 per couple can be contributed to super under this measure. To be eligible, the property must be a principal place of residence owned for a minimum of 10 years. Pensioner Concession Card reinstated Due to the assets test changes to the aged pension that came in on 1 January 2017, some pension recipients were no longer entitled to a payment and as a result lost their Pensioner Concession Card (PCC). The government will reinstate the PCC to those who lost their payment as a direct result of the 1 January 2017 asset changes. Remember, at this stage these are just proposals and not yet law. As such, they could change as legislation passes through parliament. If you have any questions please contact John Broughton at Tailor-Made on 4455 7800. Beachside News During the month of May, we welcomed three new players: Ken Whitney, John Payne and Jim Willis. May commenced with the monthly medal, with Jim Smith winning with 23 points, from Michael Bateman on 22 points, Rhett Senior finished third with 21 points, in a count back from Rob Fictoor, Ken Venables and Danny Fleming. Due to a Ladies Tournament played at Hilltop on Wednesday 10 May, seven Hilltop Veterans joined Beachside players. Peter Mulligan had a great nine holes to win with 27 points, with runner up Ian Ross finishing on 22 points and Ken Venables coming third with 21 points. This was also the first week of the Don Porter Memorial Trophy. The second round was played on 17 May, with Tanzi Lea coming in first place on 22 points, David Flynn was runner up with 21 points in a count back from Bernie Sands who came in third place. The overall Don Porter Memorial Trophy, was won by Tanzi Lea with 40 points. Stan Izzard won the Eagles Nest on the sixth tee, being just mm’s from a hole in one. A Par Event was played on 24 May with three golfers on +4, Peter Frost was the winner while Rhett Senior and Bill Brown finishing second and third, respectfully, on count backs. On 31 May, Shane Roche was the winner with 27 points, Peter Frost was second on 21 points with Peter Geach, 19 points, coming third in a count back from Cliff Workman. He recently purchased a new set of Calloway clubs – irons 5 – SW, Driver, three and five woods. Duties of the Marker Captain’s Call If you are serving as a marker for another golfer, you should: We are now coming towards the winter months and as our numbers are down at the moment we will be reverting to the winter timetable. As from 28 June Hilltop starting time will be from 7.14am through to 9.00am. We need to fill in spaces in the middle of the field so all players can finish around the same time on each tee. • Observe, as best you can, each stroke the golfer plays • Count those strokes, plus any penalty strokes that may be necessary to add • Double-check the score with the golfer after each hole (this is not required, but is strongly recommended) and write it down • Total and sign the scorecard at the end of the round • Turn the scorecard over to the golfer. As noted at the beginning, making sure the scores on the card are correct is the obligation of the golfer, who should check and sign his or her scorecard after the marker has done so. I am still being asked about several rules and I would suggest that members pick up a rules book available from Hilltop. One rule that seems to come up a lot is Rule 20: Lifting, Dropping or Placing the Ball. Before lifting a ball that has to be replaced (e.g. when a ball is lifted on the putting green to clean it), the position of the ball must be marked. (Rule 20-1) When a ball is being lifted in order to drop or place it in another position (e.g. dropping within two club-lengths under the unplayable ball rule), it is not necessary to mark its position although it is recommended that you do so. When dropping, stand upright, hold the ball at shoulder height and arm’s length and drop it. A dropped ball must be re-dropped if it rolls to a position where there is interference from the condition from which free relief is being taken, comes to rest more than two club-lengths from where it is dropped, or comes to rest nearer the hole than its original position. The marker, even if it’s another golfer, is not subject to penalty if there are any good-faith mistakes on the scorecard. There are nine situations in total when a dropped ball must be redropped and they are covered in Rule 20-2c. If a ball dropped for a second time rolls into any of these positions, you must place it where it first struck the course. However, if the marker knowingly writes down an incorrect score, or knowingly attests (by signing the card) to an incorrect score, the marker (if it’s a fellow-competitor) will also be disqualified. And if that marker is not a golfer, it’s doubtful the Committee would ever again make use of that individual. June is a busy month and we have a shield game at Mollymook on 19 June and if any member would like to assist please give John Jones a call (starters /spotters etc are required). We have Moruya vets visiting Mollymook Monday 26 June and a trip to Catalina Thursday 29 June. The nomination sheets are in the blue folder and the Moruya visit is open to Lady and Gent players. If the marker and the player disagree about a hole score, the marker can decline to sign the scorecard. In that case, the Committee would have to speak to both the marker and golfer and make a ruling. Doubt As To Procedure (Rule 3-3) Happy golfing till next time. Laurie Hayes (Vets Captain) Local Rules which ball they wish to count if the Rules permit. The competitor must report the facts of the situation to the committee or golf shop staff before returning their scorecard regardless of their score with either ball. If they fail to do so, he/she is disqualified. If a competitor is doubtful of their rights or the correct procedure during play of a hole they may, without penalty, complete the hole with two balls. After the doubtful situation has arisen and PENALTY FOR BREACH before taking further action, the OF LOCAL RULES – TWO competitor must announce to their STROKES marker or a fellow competitor that they intend to play two balls and Veteran’s Newsletter—June 2017 Narooma Visit On Tuesday 23 May, 38 Mollymook Veteran Golfers made the trek to Narooma, 35 by bus, two by car ( apparently shy types) and another by car who slept in, so he says. All had a great day, in beautiful surroundings and the sun shone brightly. The only thing that spoilt the day was that Narooma bettered our average score 28.6 to 28.2. How close was that! Our star on the day was Brian Glyde who amassed 40pts including an Eagle. Well done Brian. All players received a ball which was some consolation. Inter Club Games On Monday 29 May 16 Mollymook Veteran Golfers played at Nowra in the Inter District Club Stableford event. The boys performed well on a cold windy day, with slow greens (so I am told). John Paterson stood out as out best player with 38pts, which earned him second place in Div 2. All players received a ball and John Paterson a ball for NTP. Our next Inter Club game is at Mollymook Monday 19 June, where we need a good showing. Hopefully our top players will make themselves available for this day.
