Theories of Arousal

Drive Theory
 Theory suggesting a linear relationship between arousal and
performance
 Dominant habit or response
 The typical behaviour of an individual, either skilled or nonskilled, in the execution of a task.
 Dominant response will be more evident as arousal increases.
 P=f (H x D)
 Therefore an experienced performer will complete the skill well
because his/her dominant habit will be well learend.
 An inexperienced will execute the skill poorly as his/her
dominant habit is not well learned.
Pro’s and cons of this theory
 Apply it example pg 130 Ch 7
 What evidence is there to support this theory?
 Critics say; why do autonomous phase learners often fail
to complete skills in high arousal situations?
 E.g penalty miss the target by professional footballer
