» Settle back into the Nursery routine and remember the rules
You could help support this at home by…
» Doing activities together such as jigsaw puzzles
» Encouraging your child to help around the home
» Following a regular morning routine so that you come to school
every day and arrive on time
What we do at school;
» Provide books, props and role-play areas to
support retelling of stories.
» Model writing poems and short stories with
the children
You could help support this at home by…
» Retell very familiar stories together without
using the book, understanding the order in
which events happen.
» Share when you write for a purpose and
encourage recognising familiar letters e.g.
shopping lists, cards, letters, and notes.
» Recognise familiar logos on shops and
packaging.
What we do at school;
» Provide opportunities to talk about ourselves and our
families.
» Provide maps to enhance small world play.
» Use simple equipment to record and playback sounds and
stories eg video recorder and camera.
You could help support this at home by…
» Make an “All about me” box to share in school.
» Look at local area maps, bus routes, and talk about how
you get to where you’re going.
» Look at the symbols on recording equipment and
understand what each button does.
Communication and Language
What we do at school;
» Provide activities where we listen carefully to
different speech sounds, especially the similarities in
sounds at the beginning of words
» Encourage children to re-enact events and stories,
using talk and action
» Lots of oral story telling and listening to stories
without pictures
You could help support this at home by…
» Sing songs and share rhymes, especially listening for
words which start with the same sounds
» Talking through the order in which you do things, eg
first, next, then
» Bringing your child’s library bag every Friday so that
they can choose another book to take home.
Remember, you keep the book for a week so make
the most of the story, act it out and talk to your child
about their opinion of the story.
