3.1 Increasing and Decreasing Functions
The derivative of a function can be used to determine
whether a function is increasing or decreasing over
a particular interval.
Example
The diagram on the right shows a function which
is decreasing when x < a ( f '(x) < 0 ), constant when
a < x < b ( f '(x) = 0) , and increasing when x > b
( f '(x) > 0).
