The RIBA Boyd Auger Scholarship 2017 Information to Applicants Background The RIBA Boyd Auger Scholarship has been made possible thanks to a donation from Mrs Margot Auger, in memory of her late husband, Boyd Auger. The scholarship aims to support architectural students and graduates to travel outside the United Kingdom to work or conduct research on a topic of their choice. Eligibility All applicants must: Be enrolled in a RIBA validated Part 1, 2 or 3 course or with candidate course status, in the UK or overseas or have been granted a place of study in a validated or candidate Architecture course by the beginning of the period covered by the Bursary (Part 2 only), or Have graduated from a RIBA validated Part 1, 2 course or with candidate course status within the past 5 years Employees or family members of the RIBA, the Auger family, trustees or members of the ETFC will not be eligible to apply for the scholarship. Preference will be given to applicants who are RIBA members. Scholarship: Application and Selection Criteria The scholarship aims to support applicants in their personal, professional and academic development within the architectural field by providing them with an opportunity to undergo a period of imaginative and original research and travel. The Scholarship, worth £5,000, will support either one student or graduate or a group of students or graduates for a period of closely defined architectural research between 6 and 12 months. or one student or graduate for a period of international travel on a topic and at locations of the applicant’s choosing. This can tie-in with a period of international work experience, but the emphasis of the scholarship should be on the opportunity to travel in the chosen location. Applications for funding architecture-related work in non-governmental organisations are also welcome. Although priority will be given to projects not leading to an academic qualification, the scholarship may be used as part of broader research at postgraduate level, namely towards a Masters or PhD/MPhil programmes. The judging panel will be looking for evidence of clear academic ability and technical skill, as well as the potential for outstanding achievement and original thinking. The members of the panel are interested to know how the applicant intends to benefit from the experience and how they might make positive use of these benefits in their academic or professional work. 1 The RIBA Boyd Auger Scholarship 2017 Submissions should be completed on the application form available from the RIBA website. The applications should include: Detailed breakdown of the projected costs A detailed description of your project, to include details of your academic and professional commitment to Architecture to date and how you feel an RIBA Boyd Auger Scholarship will assist you. This should not exceed 1,500 words. A signed reference (professional or academic) The successful candidate(s) will be expected to submit two copies of a final report, detailing their research or reporting on their travel experiences. One copy will be kept by the Auger family and the other will be kept by the RIBA. Judging format The RIBA Research Grants Committee will meet in July to judge the applications. Telephone interviews or further details may be requested at short-listing stage. Administration Scholarships are to be paid to recipients in two instalments: 1. First instalment, worth 80% of the total scholarship, to be awarded upon confirmation of applicants’ eligibility; 2. Second instalment, worth 20%, to be awarded upon production of final piece of research. Payments are made directly to applicant bank account. Where there is a lead applicant, the scholarship will be paid to their account. The scholar should maintain regular contact with the RIBA for the duration of the scholarship and be prepared to present a final report to the RIBA Research Grants Committee. Conditions for the scholarship award Scholarships will be available from July 2017 subject to the recipient meeting the terms of the scholarship. Travel must take place within 12 months of the scholarship being awarded. The applicant must travel for a minimum period of two weeks, and maximum period of one year. A final report should be submitted within two years of August 2017. General terms and conditions The applicant must: 1. agree to use the money for its intended purpose. The RIBA reserves the right to request the return of funds where they feel it has been used incorrectly; 2. notify the RIBA of any change in personal circumstances that might affect the administration of the award; 3. have a valid passport and the right to travel 2 The RIBA Boyd Auger Scholarship 2017 The RIBA reserves the right to: 1. amend the conditions where they feel it necessary or where they feel the conditions bear unduly harshly upon the applicant; 2. to make no awards where they feel no suitable applicant has come forward; 3. to request further information on applicants where they feel it necessary.
