Welcome to the Global Executive MBA in Shanghai
Page 1 of 21
All of us at the MBS Shanghai Centre hope that you will find the Global Executive MBA
(GEMBA) residential workshop in Shanghai an enjoyable experience.
During your residential you will meet Alistair Brandon-Jones and Dominic Medway, who will
deliver the Managing Global Operations and Strategic Management workshop. This will be
followed by an Introduction to Business Simulation, delivered by Xavier Duran. You will also
take part in various GEMBA+ activities and, finally, Reza Salehnejad will deliver the Economics
of Strategy workshop. A dedicated team of staff will be available to offer support and guidance
during your stay.
The China Centre is located on West Nanjing Road in the Jing’an district, the famous central business zone in the centre
of Shanghai. MBS opened its international centre in Shanghai in 2008, recognizing China's growing importance as an
economic power and Shanghai's role as a global financial centre. Over the past six years, we have grown and now
deliver the Global Part-time MBA to 800+ students. We have also developed strategic partnerships with major
universities and top companies in China, and the Chinese government has named our Global Part-time MBA as one of
the best in China. The recent launch of GEMBA and the upcoming residential workshop in Shanghai will definitely
provide more highlights for the centre.
There are approximately 5,000 MBS alumni in the China region and a number of very active alumni clubs, including
healthcare, finance and Telecommunications, Media and Technology. The majority of our alumni (42%) are active in the
finance and manufacturing industries, as well as in business consultancy, IT and telecommunications. On the evening of
16th September, the healthcare club is holding a healthcare investment seminar and you are welcome to join this
event..
We look forward to meeting you soon.

The City of Shanghai
Shanghai literally means the city by the sea. It's a truly
epic city and is the biggest city in the whole of the
Page 2 of 21
People's Republic of China. A modern city with massive department stores and stylish buildings
towering high into the sky, Shanghai is an expanding and ever-changing metropolis with a
prospering tourism industry and plenty of action.
The Eastern city lies between China's long coastline and the Yangtze River, the longest river in
China. Thanks to its ideal location, vast and intelligent labour force and efficient government, the
city is once again the economic centre of China and a fast-rising star on the west coast of the
Pacific.
The municipality of Shanghai covers a vast area, although the actual city itself is more compact
and moderately sized. Shanghai city centre consists of two main regions, Pudong and Puxi, which
are separated by the winding Huangpu River. Puxi is the older part of the city and home tothe
majority of its shops, restaurants and museums.
The Bund lies on the historic Puxi side of the Huangpu River and looks across to the new skyline of
the Pudong business district. West of the old town and hidden in the backstreets north and south
of Huaihai Road (Shanghai's premier shopping street) is the former French Concession, with treelined streets, 1930s architecture, cafes and bars.
On the east side of the Huangpu is Pudong, a special
economic zone of banks, skyscrapers and new
residential compounds. Pudong is the modern part, and
is recognized for its rather unusual yet extremely
impressive high-rises such as Shanghai's tallest building,
the Shanghai World Financial Center, and the Oriental
Pearl Tower, which looks like it belongs on another
planet!
In addition to its modernization, the city's multicultural
flair gives it a unique glamour. Here, one finds the perfect blend of cultures: the modern and the
traditional, and the western and the oriental. New skyscrapers and old Shikumen draw the skyline
of the city together, where Western customs and Chinese traditions intertwine to form Shanghai's
culture.
A modern megacity that melts with hundreds of years of history and culture!
