Individual Firm Carbon Footprint Reports
Carbon footprint performance:
Explanatory Notes
1: The following carbon footprints of LSA member
firms have been developed from data supplied
by the firms themselves using the LSA Carbon
Reporting Tool which is managed on behalf of
the LSA by Greenstone. This tool is free to use
for LSA member firms and provides a helpful
platform for capturing and reporting the carbon
associated with the range of any law firm’s
activities
2: The tool uses the latest Defra conversion
factors. These allow a firm’s activity data (e.g.
litres of fuel used, number of miles driven, tonnes
of waste sent to landfill) to be converted into
tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e)
3: tCO2e is a universal unit of measurement
which relates the global warming potential
of different Greenhouse Gases (GHG) to the
equivalent potential of CO2 and makes it easier
to compare the global warming impact of
different emission sources
4: Commonly occurring GHGs include carbon
dioxide (CO2), methane, water vapour, nitrous
oxide, ozone, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
5: Although every effort is made to confirm the
accuracy of the data provided by each firm
(for example, through peer review by the LSA’s
Reporting Working Group members), this data
is taken on trust as is not certified. The LSA can
therefore not be held liable for any inaccuracies
in the data as reported by any firm
6: Data relates to the 2016 calendar year
7: Direct GHG emissions are emissions from
sources that are owned or controlled by the
reporting firm; Indirect GHG emissions are
emissions that are a consequence of the
activities of the reporting firm, but occur at
sources owned or controlled by another entity
(e.g. a supplier)
8: Carbon Emission Sources included in each
firm’s footprint are as follows:
SCOPE 1: (Direct emissions): Emissions from
activities owned or controlled by the firm.
Examples of Scope 1 emissions include emissions
from combustion in owned or controlled boilers,
furnaces, vehicles; emissions from chemical
production in owned or controlled process
equipment;
SCOPE 2: (Energy indirect): Emissions released
into the atmosphere associated with the firm’s
consumption of purchased electricity, heat,
steam and cooling. These are indirect emissions
that are a consequence of the firm’s energy use
but which occur at sources the firm does not own
or control;
SCOPE 3: (Other indirect): Emissions that are a
consequence of the firm’s actions, which occur at
sources which the firm does not own or control
and which are not classed as Scope 2 emissions.
Examples of Scope 3 emissions are business
travel by means not owned or controlled by
the firm, waste disposal which is not owned
or controlled, or purchased materials or fuels.
Losses associated with the transmission (T) and
distribution (D) of electricity supplied to the firm
are also included as Scope 3
9: Green Tariff Electricity refers to electricity
supplied which is ‘matched’ by purchases of
renewable energy by the supplier
10: Scope 2 Market Based Emissions reflect
the emissions from the electricity that a firm
purchases which may be different from the
electricity that is generated locally
