Annual Awards Banquet
An Evening to Honour Athletes,
Coaches, Officials & Volunteers
November 19, 2016 • Richmond, BC
Welcome
On behalf of the Board of Directors,
welcome to the 2016 BC Athletics Annual
Awards Banquet.
This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize
the achievements of our athletes, coaches,
officials, club executives and volunteers
during the past year. They all contribute to
the success of athletics in British Columbia.
I would like to thank the Province of British Columbia, viaSport,
our business partners, and the Royal Canadian Legion for their
on-going support. Their involvement and participation in our
sport enables us to provide a high level of programs and services
to our members. BC Athletics offers so much to all levels and
ages of its members. It is the support of parents, family, friends
and volunteers that makes this all possible.
Congratulations to all. Enjoy your evening.

Executive of the Year Award
Nanaimo and District Track and Field Club
Nanaimo and District Track and
Field Club has contributed a
significant amount of time and
effort to promote and grow
the sport of Track and Field in
Nanaimo and on Vancouver
Island over the past 50 years.
The current board of directors set
ambitious hosting goals back in
2012 and then worked with club
coaches, parents, volunteers and
athletes to see them through. New facility
infrastructure was needed in order to host
larger BC Championship meets so fundraising
programs were increased and we began to
work more closely with School District 68
and Tourism Nanaimo. From
2013 - 2016 almost $200,000
was raised to add log jump
runways, a hammer cage, track
lighting, sound system, internet,
PV equipment/ portable shed,
hurdles and many more items
that help to improve our ability
to host events and coach our
athletes. 2016 was a very
big year for Nanaimo as we
hosted the BC High School Track and Field
Championships in June, BC Summer Games
Zone 6 Camp in June, BCA Championships
Jamboree in July and then the BCA Cross
Country Championships in October.

HAROLD MORIOKA
DEBBIE BRILL - Athlete
n the 33 years that Harold
Morioka has been a
Masters member of BC
Athletics, he has set more than
100 individual Canadian Records,
19 of which still stand, including
the M45 record of 50.60 that he
ran for the 400m in 1989. This
includes the 400m CRs from M45
to M60, indoors and out.
world class high jumper, Debbie Brill
revolutionized the sport with her
reverse jumping style known as the
“Brill Bend.” She was the first North American
woman to clear six feet (1.83m) and just months
after giving birth to her son Neil she cleared
1.99m to break the world indoor record. Brill was
named BC’s Athlete of the Decade in 1980.
He also holds multiple records for 100m, 200m,
800m and long hurdles outdoors, and for 60m,
200m, and 800m indoors.
A number of these performances were World
Records, Harold being the only athlete in the
world to break WRs for all distances from 60m
to 800m.
Highlights of his career include breaking the
400m WR in Mayazaki in 1993, and then breaking
two WRs, in the 200m and 400m, in the USATF
Indoors in 2003.
He first won WAVA golds in 1989, and continued
to do so at all the other WAVA meets he
attended: 1991, 1993, 1999 and 2003. For these
achievements he has received numerous Sport
BC and BCA Masters Athlete of the Year awards.
When knee problems, plus open heart surgery,
interfered with training for the track, he turned to
competing in field events, and to founding and
serving as Head Coach for The Greyhounds, the
largest masters club in BC.
He was the BC Director for CMAA until 2011, and
continues as CMA Relay Records Chair.
For BCA he serves on the Masters committee, and
is the chair for BC Masters records for Track and
Field. Harold is also the track and field manager
for Zone 3 of the 55+ Games.
Harold was inducted into the Canadian Masters
Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.
It is an honour to induct Harold Morioka into the
BC Athletics Hall of Fame.

by winning at the Pan Pacific Games in Japan.
From there it was on to four Olympic Games
(1972-eighth, 1976-DNQ, 1980 – Cdn boycott,
1984-fifth), four Commonwealth Games (1970gold, 1978-silver, 1982-gold, 1986-fifth), three
Pan American Games (1971-gold, 1974-fourth,
1979-silver), and two World Championship
1972-bronze and Montreal in 1979-gold.
During her career, Brill won over 65 national and
international championships.
An enduring athlete and champion, Debbie
became an Officer of the Order of Canada in
1983 and has been the recipient of many awards.
In 1986, with journalist James Lawton, Brill wrote
her autobiography “Jump,” providing readers an
insight into her joy of jumping and the struggles
of being a modern woman athlete.
Debbie still holds Canadian open women’s
records for the High Jump indoors (set in 1982
– 1.99m) and Outdoors (set in 1984 – 1.98m). In
Masters Competition she set World records in
the High Jump for age groups W35, W40, W45
and W50, and still hold six Canadian Age Group
records. Her W35 World record lasted 28 years to
date. She won a W40 Silver Medal at the World
Masters Athletics Championship in 1995, and a
Gold Medal with a W45 World Record in 1999,
with a height of 1.76m, a record which still stands
today. In 2004 Debbie set the W50 world record
with a jump of 1.60m.
It is a great honour to induct Debbie Brill into the
BC Athletics Hall of Fame.
