Enrichment Week: 17-20th July 2017
Dear Parent / Carer
As well as excellent academic achievement, enrichment is a vital part of developing lifelong skills in children. Now more than ever, developing a thriving enrichment
programme is an essential part of promoting employability, academic attainment and
teaching young people the skills they need to make good choices. These skills have
benefits well beyond the classroom.
The way we co-ordinate and plan our final week in school will be different to previous
years at Longdendale to ensure that students have a fully enriching week to end the
academic year. On Monday 17th July there will be an Oracy Celebration day in which
students will take part in a sequence of lessons to further enhance their spoken
language and communication skills. Tuesday 18th July will be our Tutor Challenge day
which students will take part in a variety of team building enrichment activities centred
around the theme of ‘Murder Mystery’. Wednesday and Thursday will provide a menu of
option choices with the theme ‘Culture and Communication’ to ensure there is a
balance between trips and in school activities and a range of costs to tailor to all
families. Activities may not run if there are not enough opt to make it viable.
Overleaf is the enrichment package available to your child. It is important to discuss this
fully with them as some have slightly different arrival times back to school and have a
costing. At this stage the costings are approximate because it depends on the number
of students who opt for the activities. It is important your child hands their slip into the
office by 5th May otherwise they will be placed into a cost free activity.
15th May students will find out their assigned option choices. Full payment is due by
22nd May. If payment isn’t received by this date, your child will be moved onto a no cost
activity instead.

Year 8 Option Choices
Wednesday 19th July
Option 1 Click and Climb. This fun and challenging course is the perfect way to get
fit, have fun and test your head for heights. Normal school day. £15
Option 2 Myths and Legends Workshop. Find out about various myths and
legends of the past and have the opportunity to create your own mythical
creature! Normal school day. No cost
Option 3 Challenge Carousel. The Challenge Carousel will be a series of
outdoor challenges that students will complete in groups and in competition with
other groups. It is physical, problem solving and builds strong team working
skills. Outdoor activity. Normal school day. Approximately £12
Option 4 Alternative Communication. Use different forms of communication to
solve clues and hunt down the missing object. Normal school day. No cost
Thursday 20th July
Option 1
MFL Experience:
SPANISH – Flamenco workshop + Spanish Cinema. Spanish natives will come
in to deliver a flamenco/cultural workshop that will be fully interactive, after which
we will have the opportunity to experience Spanish culture through film.
FRENCH – French drama workshop + French Cinema. A French theatre
company will come in to complete a drama workshop with the students in
French, after which we will have the opportunity to experience French culture
through film.
Normal school day. Approximately £15
Option 2 Get Creative with Calligraphy - The Ancient Art of Xingshu, Caoshu, Kaishu.
Normal school day. No cost
Option 3 National Park Trip. Take a tour round Chatsworth House and enjoy a
picnic in the grounds and a visit to the farmyard. Normal school day.
Approximately £20
Option 4 Roving Reporters. Become a journalist for the day and report on the
various events that have taken place for enrichment at Longdendale. Normal
School Day. No cost
