Science Hedgehogs: Summer Term 1 2017 The Romans The Human Body is our science focus this term, and we will learn to identify and label its different parts. We will also learn to describe the different ofunctions of these body parts, matching them to the senses they are associated with. Finally, we will think about what a body needs to stay healthy. What should we eat? How much should we sleep and exercise? When we think we know the answers we will write advice for Roman soldiers to help them stay in a tip top physical condition! Mathematics We are going to begin maths with Time this term, recapping naming the days of the week and the months of the year and using the language of chronology to sequence them correctly. We will then move onto telling the time to the hour and half past the hour on an analogue clock, as well as drawing hands on empty clocks to show given times. We are also going to revise what we know about money, looking at different notes and coins and learning to add up amounts and find change so that we can buy and sell in the Roman Pizza Parlour! Finally, Hedgehogs will again embed their Mental Maths skills by taking part in weekly sessions where they choose and work on a special Mental Maths Target with a teacher. Art & D/T In Art and DT we will begin by looking at Roman artefacts, sketching our own designs. We will then move onto modelling our artefacts in clay, painting them once dry in rich, metallic colours. This term we will again continue our exciting fortnightly sessions on Wednesdays with Music specialists Ju and Bridget from “Musical Gems”, taking part in singing and dancing activities with our friends from Stoney Middleton school at the Church Centre. Enrichment Activities Computing The Romans is a Topic with a clear History focus, and we will find out all about the Roman invasion and life in Roman Britain, including looking at the food, toys, medicine and soldiers from that era. Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural We are going to begin our new Topic with an exciting visit from the History Van, where Hedgehog Class will get involved with some Roman-inspired activities, like trying on Roman clothing. Then, at the end of the Topic, we will enjoy an Italian cookery day, making frittatas and pizzas in class using fresh, seasonal, local ingredients. Hedgehogs will begin English by reading and writing short descriptive poems known as “kennings”, drawing objects to accompany them for our Romans display. Next, we will read an exciting Roman myth! We will talk about the characters, plot and language, predicting what will happen next and retelling the story using drama and writing. As usual, Hedgehogs will also continue to take part in daily Phonics sessions this term (following the “Letters and Sounds” programme) and regular Handwriting, SPAG and Guided Reading lessons. Topic Work Music and Movement In Computing we are going to recap what we know about the internet, using search engines like Google to safely find, copy and paste information and pictures to help us create fact sheets and on-screen iPad books about Roman soldiers. We will also build on our knowledge of algorithms when we create flow charts to “code” the words of a well-known song. English Our PSE Topic is going to be Relationships, and we will be thinking about the people who are special to us. We will also talk about what is meant by “good manners” and how we show these in our relations with others, as well as investigating “Stranger Danger”. On Thursday afternoons we will begin a new RE Topic with Mrs Jones, exploring the question “Who is Jewish and what do they Believe?” We will listen to stories, look at artefacts, talk with our partners and respond with art and writing as we explore the Jewish faith and how it is celebrated on Shabbat. PE Our PE focus this term is Athletics, and we will be working on our running, throwing, striking and fielding skills as well as our coordination.
