Contemplation Corner
Where has the summer gone? We are 2 months into the summer with one remaining. For many, back
to school shopping has begun. Children eagerly await their class lists hoping that their best friends will
be in their classes with them. With the return to school comes the return of sickness. The relaxing days
of summer are replaced with early mornings, test taking and exposure to germs. This month's
newsletter is dedicated to the "Back to School" issues. But don't worry - this will also benefit those of
you who do not have children and are not returning to school.
Back to School & Changing Seasons
Test Taking
Taking tests can be stressful. Nothing is worse than those times when you read a question, remember
studying the topic but you cannot remember the answer. One university in Japan experimented with
diffusing different essential oils in the office. When lemon was diffused, there were 54% fewer errors;
with Jasmine, there were 33% fewer errors; and with lavender, there were 20% fewer errors. Benefits
were seen when oils were diffused while the student was studying as well as being smelled via a hanky
or cotton ball during the test. Test scores increased by as much as 50%. The study recommends that
the same oil used during the time of study be used during testing. The smell of that essential oil may
help to bring back information that was studied for that particular test. (1)

Stress
You don't have to be a student returning to school to experience stress. Stress is a part of
our everyday life. It's no wonder there are so many of us suffering from adrenal fatigue.
We enter the fight or flight mode too often and that causes our body to over react and
sometimes even get stuck in this mode. I have found 2 drops of Nutmeg oil under my
tongue helps to relieve feelings of stress / anxiety and also helps me to sleep better.
For students, stress can be from tests, homework or even trying to maintain friendships.
My children are in middle school and there are many times I have commented that I would
not want to repeat this part of my life.
Young Living offers a blend called Stress Away that comes in roll on (and bottle) - which is
easy for children to use. It also comes in a bottle that can be carried in a backpack as well.
Single Oils like chamomile, neroli, marjoram, lavender and Ylang Ylang help to deal with
stress.
My children uses oils by placing them in their hands and cupping them over their nose and
breathing deeply. I have also added them to their feet on the brain points (toes) to assist
them with calming. If you need the VitaFlex charts for the feet please e-mail me and I will
send them to you. [email protected]
Energy
Changes in schedules from the lazy summer days can create issues with energy. Activities ramp up after
school with sports, jobs and other extracurricular programs. I know it takes time for my family to adjust to
the early mornings. My wakeup call meets with groans from my children as they stagger down to the
breakfast table. Essential oils that act as a stimulant can help them to get moving and awaken their brain
for the day. If you are feeling sluggish oils like peppermint, basil, eucalyptus, ginger, grapefruit, orange
and patchouli can help to increase attention and alertness. There is also a blend called En-R-Gee that
may help as well.
Sickness
Schools are Petri dishes for germs. It seems inevitable that once school starts, children will get sick. I
am convinced that this does not have to be the case. How do I know? Because my children have been
sick each year until last year. The number one thing that helps to boost their immune system is adequate
levels of Vit D (yes I am straying from Young Living oils - so bear with me). We use Biotics Research BioD-Mulsion Forte which is 2,000 iU per drop. It can be purchased from Amazon.com. My children (11 &
14) take 4,000 iU and I take 10,000 iU from Labor Day to Memorial Day. Living in Michigan, the fall
months begin a time of low sun exposure. Low Vit D levels equal lower immunity.
Now for the oils! Young Living offers a great line of products that will boost your defense. The first item
we use is the Thieves Hand Sanitizer. It is non-toxic, free from Triclosan which has been linked to
cancer. Frankincense is one of the highest immune supporting oils. I diffuse this in my kitchen while my
children eat breakfast. I have also diffused Thieves. To view some additional products, go to the blog
entry on Young Living's website called "Protecting Yourself from Cold and Flu Season"

Keep Oils Close: Keep essential oils close at hand for your student by placing the oils in small 1/4
dram or 5/8 dram vials and labeling each vial with a circle or rectangle label so it can be easily identified.
8 Oils will fit in the AromaReady® Keychain Oil Case. (I have these and they are great) Place this small
case in the pocket of a backpack or book bag along with a copy of the Quick Reference Guide for Using
Essential Oils, and your student will have quick access to the oils and information on how to use them
any time there is a need!

Cedarwood is known to increase the ability to think more clearly. It enhances awareness especially during prayer and medication. The reason for this benefit is because Cedarwood contains
some of the highest concentrations of sesquiterpenes. Sesquiterpenes have the ability to pass
through the blood-brain barrier and send oxygen to the brain through inhalation by way of the nasal
passages and olfactory nerves.
Cedarwood was the primary wood used in King Solomon and King David's palaces. King Solomon
obtained The Cedars of Lebanon in return for wheat and fine oils for as long as it took to complete
the temple. Unfortunately, these cedar trees were forested to almost near extinction. Today we use
Cedrus atlantica which is believed to be the closest in chemistry to the cedars of Biblical times.
Benefits: May prevent senility and Alzheimer's disease. Is beneficial in cosmetic preparations for
oily skin. Can be used in massages to create a relaxing atmosphere. Enhances the pineal gland to
increase melatonin levels. Also beneficial for hair loss, ADHD, and skin conditions such as eczema
and acne. Has antibacterial properties. Is a lymphatic stimulant.
How to Use
For Dietary Supplement: Dilute 1 drop with 1 drop of V-6 or olive oil. Put in a capsule and take up to
3x daily or as needed.
Topical: Apply 2-4 drops directly to desired area. Dilution not required.
Aromatic: Diffuse up to 2 hour 3x daily.
**Quick Tip** - Cedarwood
Place cedarwood on your right thumb and press it to the roof of your mouth to increase brain power.
