Current Dynamics
Seagate and Samsung Expand Their
Strategic Relationship
• Samsung combining its hard disk drive (HDD) operations
into Seagate
– Extending and enhancing existing patent cross-license agreement
between the companies
– A disk drive supply agreement under which Seagate will supply disk
drives to Samsung for PCs, notebooks and consumer electronics
– Samsung will provide Seagate with its market-leading semiconductor
products for use in Seagate’s enterprise solid state drives (SSDs),
solid state hybrid drives and other products
– Expanded cooperation between the companies to co-develop
enterprise storage solutions
• Samsung receiving significant equity ownership in Seagate
– A shareholder agreement under which an executive of Samsung will
be nominated to join the Seagate Board of Directors
• The European Commission has approved the transaction.

Thailand Flooding
The slow recovery here is having global consequences. Before the floods,
Thailand produced about 40 percent to 45 percent of the world’s hard disk
drives, the invaluable and ubiquitous storage devices of the digital age.
The upshot for consumers worldwide is that they may face a prolonged
period of higher prices for hard drives. In the United States, certain models
are currently 40 percent to 50 percent more expensive than before the floods,
levels that may remain for several months, analysts say.
