22. True Sight
Mark 10:46-52
p. 934
True Sight
 The stories of Virgil and MM
1. A Beggar beside the Road
 Jericho to Jerusalem – 18 miles.
 Leave the city: Bartimaeus begging beside the
road

At the bottom of the social order.
 We know his name !

He might have become significant in early church
2. Son of David, Have Mercy on Me
 Causes panic in the crowd – try to shut him up.

Jesus is leading the way, but the crowd is afraid
(10:32)

Jesus was heading into trouble.
 Most politically loaded name – “Son of David”

The ultimate Messianic title.

Blind Bartimaeus sees clearly.

Some in the crowd might be spies ...
 Louis Riel – Metis leader
2. Son of David, Have Mercy on Me ...
 Bartimaeus’ own perception: “Son of David”
 Jesus stops and calls him.

“what do you want me to do for you?”

“Rabbi, I want to see”
3. He followed Jesus
 Jesus restores his sight.
 Bartimaeus “followed Jesus along the road” (v
52)
 Unlike the rich young ruler, Bartimaeus has
nothing.

He sits every day in the dust begging.

When he is blind he can see who Jesus is

When he can see he follows him.

2000 years later we all still know his name !
True Sight
 Bartimaeus saw who Jesus was.
 What about us?

Like Virgil & MM, seeing properly requires work &
the Spirit

Will we know Jesus as best we can

Will we follow what we know.
