‘Dawgs Travel to Silver Lake for 92nd Meeting of Highway Rivalry
Rossville will take the five-mile bus ride east to meet arch rival Silver Lake in the
annual War of 24 contest on Friday night. The War on 24, which started in 1924,
has often meant more than bragging rights for the two teams. The historic rivalry
has decided who will play for the Class 3A State Title in five of the last six years.
Mid-East League positioning will be the objective on Friday as the Bulldawgs look
to rebound from their first loss of the season a week ago. The Eagles, who lead
the all-time series 53-35-3, has won the last eight meetings between the two dating
back to 2003, the longest such streak in the series. This will be the 92nd meeting
of the game and will be a tape delay broadcast on Rossville’s local cable
channel (Galaxy, 29). In his 11th season
broadcast on CHANNEL29
as voice of the Dawgs, Tony Eakin will
tape delay – sunday, sept. 21st, 7pm
call the action with analyst Brett Eakin.

Worth Noting:
Defense Pouncing: Senior Matt Fischer’s recovery of a fumble for a touchdown in last week’s
game vs. Riley County was the first defensive touchdown for the Bulldawgs in several seasons. It
marked the first non-offensive seven-pointer since Jeremy Foxhoven’s 94-yard kickoff return in
last season’s 35-27 win over Northern Heights in week nine.
Rushin’ for 7: With Senior Quarterback Spensor Askren’s 1-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth
quarter of week two, Rossville now has a rushing touchdown in 9 of its last 10 games.
100-yard Club Crowded: In Rossville’s week one win over Wellsville, for the first time in years,
the ‘Dawgs featured two 100-yard passers, a 100-yard rusher, and a 100-yard receiver in the
same game. Senior QB Spensor Askren (7/10, 189yds, 2TDs), sophomore QB Mitch Buhler (5/8,
108yds, 2TDs), senior RB Robert Cooper (8car, 118yds, 2TDs), and junior WR Matt Buhler (4cat,
122yds, TD).
Bulldawg Brothers: The scoring in week one vs. Wellsville was truly a family affair. 38 of the 56
points racked up by Rossville were totaled by either a Buhler or Askren. As Spensor Askren and
Mitch Buhler both had career nights under center, Sawyor Askren and Matt Buhler managed to
find the end zone through both the ground and air respectively. Rounding out the pairs, the
Martinson brothers, Riley and Cody, were on the front line and in the defensive secondary.

Week 2 Recap: Rain Soaked Night Slows Down Rossville, 14-34
Rossville, stymied by an aggressive defense all night long, could only manage
190 yards of offense dropping their first game of the season, 14-34 at Riley
County. The Falcons, like Rossville, took a while to get in rhythm, snapping a
slick football over the head of sophomore quarterback Calvin Kenney. Rossville
senior Matt Fischer recovered the pigskin in the endzone to give the ‘Dawgs a 70 lead after one quarter. But,

minutes remaining the first half,

Kenney hooked up with senior
M. Fisher, RHS: TD, fumble recovery
WR Bruce Field over a
Bulldawg defender for a 71-yard strike. The Falcons would add another
Kenney-Field score with just 18 seconds left in the half to lead 14-7 at the break.
The Dawg defense could not find a stop once the rain started to pour in the third
quarter allowing two straight scoring drives to push the separation to three
touchdowns. Junior back Sawyor Askren carried Rossville in the final frame en
route to his 61 yards on the ground. Sawyor’s older brother and Bulldawg senior
quarterback Spensor Askren finished the drive with a 1-yard TD run. Spensor
was just six-of-fourteen for 76 yards passing and threw 2 interceptions, his first
of the season. Riley has now won five straight over the Bulldawgs.
