CMB Leadership Weekend

CMB Leadership Weekend
Friday, August 16th.
Welcome back!


Fire Up for the 91st season!
Remembering from July:
◦ Global expectations (music &
marching fundamentals)
◦ Attitude of Excellence – beginning
day 1
◦ Working Collaboratively
◦ Building trust – 5 Dysfunctions
◦ Parking Lot
Friday Objective:
To better gain an understanding of how we define leadership
by looking at other theories, discussing experiences, and
begin working on our vision for 2013.
Definitions of Leadership
Leadership has been described as “a
process of social influence in which
one person can enlist the aid and
peer support of others in the
accomplishment of a common
project".
LEADERSHIP THEORIES
There are multiple types, approaches, and ideas
to leadership in which shows that there isn’t just
“one way” to “do” leadership.
Style Approach

Leadership Styles
Servant Leadership
And there are plenty more!
DiSC Leadership Style assessment , which
we have taken on as a band, has a Servant
Leader focus.
 We can further explore what our
leadership definition is through
exploration and activities….

Play-Doh Gallery
Take some time to
create/represent
what leadership
means to you.
 Those who did this
last year may have
new ideas or
different ways of
representing
leadership.

Leader - Defined
Let’s discuss and share our views, our
experiences, and our definitions.
 Please take some time to pinpoint
keywords you think define a leader (or
leadership) to you AND what/whom you
consider to “be” a leader and “not” a
leader (pgs 14 & 15).

Personal Best Leadership
Experiences



Each one of us has a “personal best” story that we’ve
experienced at one time or another. Perhaps the time
when you discovered your ability to lead, or even when
you’ve learned a lot from a rather significant mistake.
It is often difficult for us to address our strengths and
weaknesses and also acknowledge others’ strengths.
Take some time to reflect on your strengths and
weaknesses. In what situations can doing so be helpful
and/or difficult?

Job Description/Leadership Roles
Thoughts on the definitions of these roles?
 Is there anything unclear or need to be added?
 How do these roles support our global
expectations and collective vision for
The Chippewa Marching Band?

You have 5 minutes to rank,
individually, who you’d put on
the field and who you would
shadow.
You will then have 15
additional minutes to confer
with the rest of the section
leaders and come to a group
consensus. The final decision
MUST be unanimous amongst
your group.
If you can not do this in 20
minutes, you will be
eliminated off the Chip Ship.
