Wednesday, 4th July, 1990 THE TEESDALE MERCURY R id e r s c o m p le t e e n d u r a n c e t r ip s M IS S IO N T E A M GETS A H EAR TY W ELCO M E People o f all ages had a liv e ly a n d e n jo y a b le tim e in th e C o c k fie ld a re a d u r in g a 10 d a y mission which ended on Monday. All sorts o f events were organised during the period, and there was a sense of fun at each of them. The Methodist Minister, the Rev Colin Short, was host for the occasion, in which mem bers of his church welcomed 10 men and women from C liff College, which is in the Peak District of Derbyshire. It is a M ethodist college, specialising in lay training in biblical studies and evange lism. The events they attended included the sunshine comer, holiday club, open air camp, youth club and finally, on Monday evening, a love feast. This was in addition to several visits to Cockfield School to take part in the m orning assembly. These were joyful visits which had the pupils singing, clapping and perform ing action songs as well as think ing about the messages put across to them. The team at the school when the Mercury called — Lilian Ridley, Shirley Bradshaw, Frank Holmes and Adrian Hancock — were given an enthusiastic reception. Sunday happened to be the day, known locally as Camp M eeting Sunday, when Methodists have by tradition gone outdoors for a service on the Fell. This time it was arranged for the green next to the Methodist Church, but a few hymns were sung earlier on the Fell, at the camp meeting ground. Mr Short and other church members worked with Cliff College on details of the mis sion for some eight months, and had three weekend visits from the team, before the spe cial 10 days started. The minister said the event was held because the members The Northumberland and Durham group of the Endurance Horse and Pony Society held training rides of 18 and 2 2 m iles from Barningham, courtesy o f Sir Anthony M ilbank and the Forestry Commission. Swaledale Fell Resue organisation was in attendance. The event was organised by Sue Russell and Lynn Kipling. Jeremy Kipling was starter and tim ekeeper. Two check points were m anned by Rebecca Rowlandson, Debbie Howson and Alan Russell. Mr Garner was gate steward and Kit Hartog was secretary. The courses were completed as fol lows. He added: "We believe it is part o f our responsibility before God to seek to declare these truths as we are able. The college team came to help us share in this work." The team was led by Miss Shirley Bradshaw, a full time college evangelist, and Mr Andrew Hinds, a college diplo ma student. They lived in houses around the village and had meals with their hosts. "The hospitality has been wonderful," Frank Holmes told the Mercury. "We have been looked after and fed very well indeed."
