President's Letter March 2017
If you're receiving your Unitizer late this month it's because of me. I wanted to
await the results of our just concluded Sectional. It was our most successful
Sectional in years, with a record turnout for the Swiss Teams on Sunday and a
total table count of 224 for the weekend! People love the Cañada College
Venue and it led to a nice profit for our unit. Thank you Mark Renson and your
many volunteers headed by Marge Pacchetti For complete results, go to the ACBL website for Tournament Results
(http://web2.acbl.org/tournaments/results/2017/02/1702036.htm). I'll mention
only a few: In the Open Pairs Championship, Dan Raider and partner were 4th
overall. In the Swiss Teams, Robert Ng and I headed a team that came in 3rd in
the top Bracket. Fred Chasalow and Pete Klebofski and team were 2nd in Flight
2; while Helene Ettleson and Edie Wong led their team to 3rd in Flight 3. In the
side games, Loretta Baines and Teiko Peterson were the tops from our Unit
with a 2nd on Saturday am. June White and Ann Longknife were 1st in Sunday
nd, 3rd and 4th! The Szteinbaums were

2nd in the Sunday pm game. The list of Masterpoint winners included many
from Unit #498! Congratulations to all.
Our February Mentor/Mentee game was another success with 13 Tables. Pro
Tony Baranski and Am Maria Levy topping the Field (66.5%!) and Pro Claude
Hughes with Am Joanne Lewin winning N/S. Incidentally, Joanne, who is our
Coordinator for this game, took a Survey and found that the majority prefer our
continuance of the games once a month, with 3 month segments; partnerships
can continue for a 2nd segment only. Our March game is scheduled for the 16th.
Patti is planning her annual St. Patrick's day luncheon on Thursday, 3/16/17,
with corned beef and all of her Irish dishes. Our Unit Game, also with a St.
Patty's theme, will be the following Saturday, 3/18/17. Be sure to sign up for
both events ahead of time!
Some of our annual awards have been neglected, as have the plaques that
accompany them. The Board is re­instituting them and will do its best to cover
the in­between years. Plan to come to Unit #498's Annual Meeting on Thursday
evening May 11th for our Meeting and Awards.
Our Nominating Committee, headed by Linda Schwarz, is already geared up
and making good progress in filling our slate for the new Board of Directors,
which will commence with the May meeting. Thank goodness – I'll be retiring to
Ex­President!

High School Bridge News
The Third Annual Bay Area High School Bridge Championship
will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2017, from 10 AM-6 PM, at the
Bayshore Bridge Club in Burlingame. Some of our Peninsula Youth
Bridge students will be attending.
This event is primarily sponsored by Silicon Valley Youth Bridge,
http://siliconvalleyyouthbridge.org/. However, thanks to the unit’s
fundraising, Peninsula Youth Bridge will also contribute to this fun
event as well. Thank you for your support. .
