Isaac’s Servant’s Mission
Esau and the Birthright
Conflict Resolution, Bible Style
Group 1
Matthew 26:38-46 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful,
even to death; remain here, and watch [1] with me.” 39 And going a
little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it
be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will,
but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them
sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me
one hour? 41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into
temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My
Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.”
43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes
were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed
for the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then he came
to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later
on. [2] See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed
into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer
is at hand.”
27 As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to
him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you
nursed!” 28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of
God and keep it!”
29 When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an
evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the
sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so
will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The queen of the South will
rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn
them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of
Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The
men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and
condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold,
something greater than Jonah is here.
33 “No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a
stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of
your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but
when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. 35 Therefore be careful lest
the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light,
having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays
gives you light.”
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
15 When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said,
“It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil
that we did to him.” 16 So they sent a message to Joseph, saying,
“Your father gave this command before he died, 17 ‘Say to Joseph,
Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin,
because they did evil to you.’ And now, please forgive the
transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept
when they spoke to him. 18 His brothers also came and fell down
before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19 But Joseph
said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? 20 As for
you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring
it about that many people [1] should be kept alive, as they are today.
21 So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he
comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
• 12 she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” 13 As it is
written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”
• 14 What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God's part? By no
means!
• 15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root
of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become
defiled; 16 that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who
sold his birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that afterward,
when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he
found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.
• 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet
your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or
his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.”
• 12 Whoever is wicked covets the spoil of evildoers,
but the root of the righteous bears fruit.
• 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through
this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and
pierced themselves with many pangs.
• 4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed
be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what
you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
6 So we can confidently say,
• “The Lord is my helper;
I will not fear;
what can man do to me?”
• 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he
suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to
him who judges justly.
