APPLING CHRISTIAN ACADEMY ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT
THE VISION:
1)
Athletes who genuinely have a love for God, have a conviction to represent Him on the
field/court, have a teachable, humble attitude, and have a selfless "team before me” approach.
2)
Coaches who love their athletes and work hard for them in preparation, strategic
improvement, and college recruiting exposure; who respect and speak well of parents and each
other, and who represent Christ’s character and humility to opposing coaches, poor officiating,
and undisciplined athletes.
3)
Parents who support and pray for all their coaches, who respect coaches decisions even
if they don’t agree, who are more concerned about their athlete’s character on/off the field than their
playing time or potential for a scholarship, and who are giving their valuable time to serve God in any
way they can without concern for which sport, or student(s), will benefit the most by their serving.
4)
Administration of Athletics and the School that is organized and enthusiastic about the
successes and efforts of its teams giving due adulation for accomplishment, that is properly and fairly
enforcing all regulations and guidelines, that is keeping parents informed and involved in a structured
and productive manner always aware of the value of their time, and that is keeping this vision ever
before them in their efforts to bring glory to God in the Academy’s Athletic Department.
We’re asking God to give us courage to be different. Not superior in attitude, but
distinctive in our desire to follow Him wholeheartedly as we participate in this program.
THE MISSION STATEMENT:
To glorify God by instilling and uncompromisingly demonstrating through our staff
and athletes our passion for the integrity, character, and person of Jesus Christ within the
arena of athletics, while maintaining our commitment to the spirit of competition, sound
fundamental skills, and disciplined teamwork.(Col. 3:23-24) - "Whatever you do, work at it
with all your heart, as working for the Lord and not for men, since you know that you will
receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.”
THE PHILOSOPHY AND PRIORITIES:
The athletic department is only one aspect of the total educational experience at Appling Christian
Academy. Our athletic philosophy is merely an extension of the philosophy of the school, which is to
serve parents by providing a distinctively Christ-centered, college preparatory educational experience
for young people.
Priority One: Glorify God with the talent He has given while keeping an eternal perspective.
Priority Two: Unify the people in the program.
Priority Three: Play with passion that honors God above all else.
1
THE PURPOSE AND GOALS OF ACA ATHLETICS
The purpose of athletics at ACA is to provide a context for our students to use their Godgiven talents in the physical forum of competition. Academics, social events, and the school
atmosphere provide the primary framework for the development of the mental, social, and
spiritual aspects of the student. While athletics does chiefly cultivate the uniquely physical
element, it also produces excellent opportunities, and "teachable moments," to build the mental,
social, and spiritual areas as well. Our intent is to use athletics to bring a well rounded experience to
the student who participates.
Goals for the Athletic Department
l)
To represent the person of Jesus Christ and His character in a genuine manner in the
spirit and arena of athletic competition.
2)
To develop athletes who are playing for the glory of God, with disciplined and selfcontrolled attitudes, and with passion out of a love for God, their coaches, and their
teammates, etc.
3)
To encourage and strengthen coaches while providing them with the opportunity to
grow in the knowledge and grace of Jesus Christ while becoming more and more conformed to His
image.
4)
To challenge our athletes to excel in all phases of their lives, respect and love for
parents and family, commitment to academics, relationships with friends, and daily
improvement in their athletic skills.
5)
To teach our athletes the positive benefits and values of lifelong physical fitness,
training, and competition as a means to care for God’s temple - our bodies.
6)
To teach our athletes about character growth and maturity and how they are affected by
the experiences of winning, losing, and competition in general.
THE PARENT/ATHLETE/ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT RELATIONSHIP
The Athletic Director’s Role:
To provide each student the opportunity to be aware of the athletic programs of ACA. As a
servant to the administration, and ultimately to the parents, he is committed to insuring the highest
quality of information, organization, and communication available at the present time.
Should a need arise regarding any student athlete such as eligibility, transportation concerns,
behavior problems of a significant nature, or the like, the athletic director will be in contact with
the student directly and the parent, if necessary, to keep them informed of what is happening.
2
The Coach’s Role:
Our philosophy of athletics holds that the varsity coach of each sport should be given primary
responsibility over his/her program, and each subsequent coach in that sport is under the varsity coach.
This involves oversight of tryouts and player levels (which team each player will be on and if any
players will be switching mid-season), development of program strategies, encouragement/training of
all coaches and players in the program, and handling of minor team discipline problems with the input
of the athletic director, if appropriate. The coach is the individual designated the responsibility to
develop the character and physical skills of the athletes in his particular sport. No coach is permitted to
make winning the only goal, either stated or regularly implied by actions. The coach is to serve the
parents by providing an environment of discipline and opportunity for the athletes to grow in character
and experience quality competition. Our coaches at each level are challenged to abide by the ACA
policy on playing time. There is room for interpretation for the coach, but each has been apprised of
his/her responsibility and therefore will be happy to assist any parent in explaining the decision making
process should questions arise.
The Parents’ Role:
We are very excited that you have chosen Appling Christian Academy as the place to
educate your child and we have your concerns about a quality educational and athletic experience as
our highest priority. We are asking that you, as a parent, help us in keeping Christ and His character
central to the focus of our teams. You are encouraged to talk to the coaches of your son/daughter’s
team and encourage them in their efforts to serve your child. Inform the coach of your child’s
tendencies, strengths, and weaknesses. These things are very helpful in relating to the athletes in
teachable moments. When the athlete is in the direct supervision of the coach, we ask that you refrain
from anything but positive encouragement to the player and team as they carry out their directives
from the coach. Our only request is that any parent discussing playing time with a coach do it in a
Christ-like spirit of appeal and self-control seeking to understand first and then if not satisfied,
requesting a meeting with the athletic director. Each coach is aware of the need to keep a godly
demeanor at all times, and should that come into question the coach will be addressed accordingly.
We are aware of many parents’ genuine excitement about their child’s involvement in our program,
especially at games. In light of this, please understand our perspective on this. The court/field of
competition is a hotbed of character revelation and development.
Officials are making calls and judgments on your son/daughter and the team at a dramatic pace. This
has the potential to create a lot of frustration in those of us who support them when they do
not agree. As Christians, we have yielded our right to respond to authority in a derogatory manner. We
are called to respect and pray for those in authority over us, regardless of our opinion or their skill, and
to trust God to bring change. Watching injustices against our children is tough, but that can be an
opportunity for us to grow in character by how we respond to those things. Let’s be very enthusiastic
for our teams; they are the ones who need the encouragement. Let’s keep our objective to be always
grateful to the coach, to be patient with the referees, and to be encouragers to our players while
supporting the program with our presence. We are also asking our parents to take an active role in
supporting the teams that their children participate on by getting involved in the Booster Club.
3
The Athlete’s Role:
The athlete is the young person who is given the opportunity to step into the arena of
competition on the behalf of our Lord and Appling Christian Academy. There is a great
responsibility that comes with that opportunity which must not be overlooked in the heat of battle. The
defining characteristic of the athlete is his response to adversity and to winning. Adversity comes in
many forms; losing games, bad calls, reduced playing time, cheap shots from opponents, harsh
opposing fans, and the like, but the response as an athlete to these challenges reveals what our
priorities are and what we believe. As Christians, we must live our lives by God’s grace in a selfcontrolled manner on and off the field, regardless of what happens to us. When adversity comes we
must allow Christ to be gloried in us by holding our tongue and playing even harder. In winning, we
must also exhibit humility and grace and not be arrogant in our actions towards opponents.
THE APPEAL PROCESS TO CONFLICT RESOLUTION
“THE MATTHEW 18 PRINCIPLE”
“If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault , just between the two
of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over, if he will not listen, take one
or two others along so that every matter may be established by the testimony of two or
three witnesses." Matthew 18: 15-16
If you have a problem with something a particular coach does or says to your child, please
go directly to that coach and with an attitude of appeal, seek to understand from his perspective
what actually was said or occurred. Often times it is a misunderstanding of some sort that can be
quickly clarified and taken care of. If the answer you receive is not satisfactory or you feel that
the coach was unresponsive to you, then contact the athletic director and arrange a meeting. The
athletic director will not go around the coaches when problems arise. He will not hear or pass along
grievances to any coach unless he observes the actions personally. Please respect the coaches you’ve
given permission to serve your child by going to them first, and then to the next level. It is important
for you to feel that you will be heard with your concerns, and it’s our commitment to provide a genuine
opportunity for you to have that happen. Please, honor the process and we think you’ll find excellent
results and a more unified program because of it.
ACA ATHLETIC AFFILIATION
GCAA- GEORGIA CHRISTIAN ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
Appling Christian Academy is a recognized member of the GCAA which serves as the
authorized representative of the Department of Education in the supervision and control of
interscholastic athletic activities of all schools in the state. ACA abides by the all state bylaws,
rules, and regulations as set forth by the GCAA.
4
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES
Computation of academic eligibility for athletes will be done on the basis of grade reports issued
each three weeks during the school year. The first of these is to be issued during the fourth week of
school and should be based on grades compiled during the first three weeks. Subsequent reports will be
issued every third week of classes thereafter throughout the school year (week 7, l0, 13, etc.),
l.
Athletes must attain at least a 2.0 average on a 4.0 scale and have a passing grade in all subjects
to be eligible for competition. Grading Scale: A = 4.0 B = 3.0 C = 2.0 D = l.0 F=0
(Any half unit courses, etc. should be weighted accordingly in determining the average.)
2.
3.
Athletes who do not attain at least a 2.0 average on any three-week report will be ineligible for
competition in all GCAA games or contests (region and non-region) until the issuance of the
next three-week report with at least a 2.0 average. Practicing with the team may be permitted
provided the athlete demonstrates initiative and interest toward his academic progress. Athletes
will be restored to academic eligibility only at the time grade reports are issued (each three
weeks).
a.
If a student is academically eligible at the time report cards are issued, but falls below a
2.0 average when grades are checked at the three-week period, an additional three
weeks of evaluation may be granted by the principal. This should be granted only to
students who, in the judgment of the principal, will be able to raise their grade point
average to 2.0 by the end of the additional three weeks. These students will then be
placed on “academic probation" and their records kept at the school. Students not
attaining a 2.0 average at the end of the additional three weeks must remain off the team
(including the next sport, if applicable) for six weeks instead of three weeks.
b.
If a student is academically ineligible at the time report cards are issued, academic
probation cannot be granted.
c.
Ineligible athletes do not participate in any athletic event, nor are they dismissed from
school early to accompany the team to games, nor do they dress out for any games.
The athletic director will notify coaches regarding the eligibility of athletes.
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AND ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION
1.
2.
3.
4.
All athletes are expected to have a good attendance record.
All athletes must be in class for a minimum of ½ of the school day on the day of a game or
practice in order to participate that afternoon or evening. Athletes must be “in school” by the
beginning of the 3rd period and not leave school before the completion of the 3rd period. Their
arrival or dismissal must be accompanied by a note from a parent and be excused.
In the event that a student leaves school early, he must obtain permission from the principal or
athletic director to return for practice or a game after discussing the reason for early departure.
Examples of legitimate reasons would be a doctor/dental appointment, death in the family.
If an athlete is too sick, or unable to come to school, then it is reasonable to believe that he or
she is too sick, or unable to practice or play in a game. The only acceptable excuse that would
allow participation is any absence that was pre-arranged by the office (not by the student or
parent). The only exceptions allowed to any of the above will be case by case at the discretion
of the athletic director or principal.
5
5.
Athletes returning late from a game will not be excused for any tardiness or from
assignments/tests given the following day. The “Midnight” Rule regarding allowable tardiness
after arriving back to campus after midnight must be approved in advance by the athletic
director or principal, unless circumstances require the coach to obtain approval en route due to
some unforeseeable circumstance. In that case, the athletic director or principal would set those
times for arrival.
Dress Code
All athletes are expected to maintain modest dress and to refrain from wearing anything
not consistent with the school’s dress code whether playing or not. Athletes are representing our
school and athletic program at a school function or GCAA event , please be respectful of this fact.
Working Athletes
Because of the demanding schedules of our athletic teams and the responsibility of each
athlete to maintain high academic integrity, athletes are discouraged from getting outside jobs in
season. If, however, there are working conflicts, the athlete is expected to communicate well in
advance with his coach about the conflict and come to an acceptable agreement. However, the
coach is not to be held responsible for reduced playing time, as a result of the absence of the
athlete for work reasons. The athletes who are present at practice are the coach’s first priority
for playing time.
Discipline
Appling Christian Academy believes that discipline is a vital part of an athlete’s life and
training. Paul spoke of "training" and disciplining the body. Any time an athlete breaks training,
team, or school rules, the coach has the obligation to discipline that athlete. A coach should
always respond to an athlete’s behavior by keeping in mind what he/she knows about that person
individually. Using the following guidelines will enable all of us in the athletic program at ACA to
handle discipline fairly, yet effectively:
l) As an athlete you should be disciplined in every area of your life (academics,
athletics, etc) and it is our commitment to assist you in the development of those disciplines.
2) Each athlete is subject to school rules like any other student and will not be shown
favoritism or special treatment. Each athlete who is late for practice for disciplinary
reasons will be subject to that coach’s regular discipline for tardy athletes. If
an athlete is made to stay for disciplinary reasons after school on a game day or practice
day, he must arrange for his own transportation The responsibility lies squarely on the
athlete to get where he/she needs to be.
3) lf any athlete remains unresponsive to disciplinary action taken by a coach and
does not change, or flagrantly violates a ACA rule in a practice or contest (fighting,
cursing, blatant disrespect toward a coach or official), will be referred to the athletic
director and principal for discipline. The coach will consult with the two officials and
decide what action should be taken. Parents will be notified of the situation and dismissal from
the team can be a consideration. The athletic director reserves the right to assist any coach in a
disciplinary matter with an athlete that is unresponsive.
Our unchanging goal is to accurately reflect the character of Christ in our attitudes and
sportsmanship. Athletes who do not pursue this goal with us will not play for us.
6
PRE-SEASON POLICIES
Physical Exams
Each athlete who comes out for a tryout/practice must submit a completed
physical form and the appropriate emergency treatment authorization information before he can
participate in any ACA practice. State law requires this to be enforced.
Team Selection & Tryouts
Each head coach will submit a format and the dates for tryouts to the athletic director
no later than one week before the first tryout date. There will be a minimum of two dates
available to tryout and the head coach will have those dates announced at school in advance
of the first day. A sign-up sheet for each sport will be made available by the athletic director so that the
student’s paperwork (physicals and other forms) and eligibility can be checked before the tryout.
Cut Policy
In the sports where the number of players on the team has limitations, cuts will be handled
individually by the head coach with sensitivity and compassion. The coach will not post lists, but
rather talk personally with each athlete and emphasize his/her strengths, discuss needed areas for
improvement, and indicate that athlete’s status with regard to the team and program.
Athletic fees/Other expenses
The athletic fee assists ACA with GCAA registration fees, paperwork, uniform maintenance,
away transportation expenses, and any related athletic expenses. The amount of the fee is set by the
ACA School Board. Any additional purchases (equipment, shoes, travel shirts, sports shirts, etc.) must
be approved in advance with the athletic director along with the planned method of payment.
Practices & Practice Schedules
1) All practice schedules will be provided to the athletes by the coach or AD. The
practice sites will remain relatively constant, however, any changes will be announced. If a
transportation schedule is needed, it will be posted. This weekly schedule will also reflect any changes.
It is the responsibility of the coach and AD to provide transportation when necessary and it is the
responsibility of parents to know where to pick up their students and at what time.
2) Wednesday practices are not allowed.
3) Practice lengths are at the discretion of the coach, but will not exceed 2 ½ hours.
4) Athletes should be on time for their practice sessions. This includes being on
time to practice and to all team meetings. Practices are mandatory for an athlete to
participate in the ACA athletic program. With the exception of illness or injury, a player
should not be tardy or absent from a practice without prior communication with his/her
coach. Unexcused absences from a practice will be handled by the individual coach.
Discipline may range from extra conditioning in practice, suspension, or removal depending
upon the athlete, circumstances, and frequency of absences.
5) Additional rules may apply from the coach as long as they are consistent with the ACA goal
and vision.
7
Pre-Season Parent Meetings
It is mandatory that each coach, with the assistance of the AD, hold a meeting with the
parents and prospective players for their team in the pre-season. This will afford the player’s
parents the opportunity to get to know each other, the coach, and the support staff. This will also
provide the AD and the coach an opportunity to communicate any special rules or guidelines
he/she may have for their team, tryout formats, and anticipated expenses for the parents in that
sport. PARENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND.
Team Pictures
Team pictures will be taken each year in uniform prior to or during the season. The dates for
these pictures will be announced in advance. These pictures will be in the yearbook and available
to parents and athletes for purchase. It is mandatory that everyone on the team participate in the team
pictures for the yearbook regardless of intent to purchase.
IN-SEASON POLICIES
Playing Time Policy
1) Jr. Varsity Level - The coach will choose a starting team for each game based on attitude,
ability, performance in practices, and in past games. We want all members of the team to participate,
and each athlete should be given time to play. All coaches are encouraged to be as equitable as
possible in playing time, but the playing time is solely the decision of the coach and may differ at
times. Each JV coach understands that he/she has a developmental role with
the athletes. He must choose his player mixture wisely to insure that each player on the team is
developing with appropriate playing time experience. This will differ, and at times significantly,
but playing time is a priority at this level for all the athletes.
2) Varsity Level - The coach will choose a starting team for each game and play the best
players. This will be done on the basis of ability, attitude, performance in practices, and
performance in games. There are no guarantees for equal "minutes" or requirements for such on
the varsity coach. He/she will be sensitive to the players’ desire to play and game
situations which would allow the maximum number of athletes to play. Athletes must know that
"success" is in no way synonymous with playing time only. Success is in contributing to the team’s
benefit with the abilities God has given.
.
Quitting a Team
l) No athlete will be allowed to quit any team/squad once he/she has been selected and
the season has begun. If an athlete does quit a team in a hostile or unapproved manner he or she
cannot play another sport for one calendar year. If the student quits after the regular season
begins for reasons other than illness or unforeseeable circumstances, he or she will not be permitted to
participate on any other athletic team that year. In the event that a student wants to switch teams before
a season begins, it will have to be approved by both coaches and the AD.
A player will be allowed to drop from a team if serious injury dictates, if there are family concerns, or
if it is in the best interest of his or her academic status. A meeting with the parents, coaches and
athletic director will be held and approval given by the athletic director. This, however, will put in
question the student’s ability to play for the remainder of the year.
8
2) No athlete who quits a team under circumstances of conflict will be allowed to rejoin,
unless there is an appropriate apology and restoration is made to all parties involved in the
conflict. The athlete will also forfeit all awards and recognitions for that sports’ year.
Suspensions/Technical Fouls/Cautions/Ejections
l) Any athlete receiving any type of school suspension for any reason will not be allowed to
participate in the scheduled games or practices falling within the suspension time. Two school
suspensions are grounds for removal from the team/squad if the coach or AD considers it warranted.
2) Any athlete receiving a conduct technical foul in football or basketball or a verbal caution in
baseball or softball will be removed from that game and will remain out of that game for a set of time
deemed necessary by the head coach.
3) Any athlete receiving two technical fouls in one game, or conduct ejection in an athletic
event will automatically be suspended for the next 7 days as set forth by ACA.
4) Any player having been suspended for two or more games for cautions and/or ejections will
be removed from the team according to policies for a period of six weeks. If at any time the player is
removed from a game and he/she outwardly displays a negative response toward the officials or the
coaches for the action taken, he/she can be suspended from the next scheduled game(s) as determined
by the coach or AD. The athlete’s response to the corrected offense is more important than the
committed offense itself! The athlete’s response defines and reveals the athlete’s character in a more
obvious way. We are not unaware of the emotions involved in the heat of a game, nor are we unaware
that officials can make bad calls, but in neither case are we as Christians permitted to respond in a
negative or derogatory manner. It is therefore necessary for us to be accountable in these circumstances
that we might mature in our responses and in the character and humility of Christ.
5) If, at the discretion of the athletic director, the principal, or the head coach,
an athlete’s play or attitude continues to display an unwillingness to change, a blatant disrespect for
authority, or a direction which is contrary to the direction and philosophy of the ACA athletic program,
he/she may be removed from a team or squad at that time.
Game Travel/ Participation and Transportation
It is the responsibility of the parent and athlete to insure that he/she is on time for all
scheduled departures on game days. The athletic director will inform all participants with an
information sheet outlining all of the necessary details.
Away Trips
l) Parents will be given the time of departure and the estimated time of return of each trip
in advance of the trip to allow time for parent planning. All persons riding on school transportation
shall abide by the dress code established by the school/coach for that particular activity. The dress
established for any particular team will be adhered to by members of that team or squad.
9
2) Prayer should begin and end every trip. Conversations and actions should be those
which are glorifying to the Lord Jesus Christ.
3) All those who travel on the bus shall return on the bus. The only exceptions will be
those who are riding home with parents with the approval of the coach or person responsible for the
group. Special permission will be granted in cases of necessity for athletes to ride home with someone
other than their parents. This will be a matter of necessity and not a matter of convenience for the
athlete. A parental permission note should be sent to the coach in advance.
4) Maps or directions are available for all away games.
Seating arrangements in co-ed circumstances
Athletes will have designated seating on all school provided transportation. The athletic director and
coach will give seating instructions for each trip. As a general rule, when the bus is used, no mixed
seating will be permitted and athletes will sit in the front part of the bus. Adult supervision will always
prevail.
Injuries
All injuries requiring medical attention should be reported to the coach and athletic director
immediately. An athlete must be escorted to the hospital emergency room by a parent or guardian and
a coach or the athletic director. No treatment can be given without parental authorization unless it is a
matter of survival. Each coach and the athletic director has an insurance card that should accompany
the student to the emergency room or doctor’s office. An injury report shall be completed by the
athletic director in a timely manner. The form is forwarded to the financial secretary.
POST-SEASON POLICIES
Awards/Recognitions Policy
One purpose of an athletic award is to recognize an athlete’s God-given ability and
achievement. Another is to motivate the athlete to be the best that he/she can be. Awards and
certificates are given at athletic banquets to recognize achievements, attitudes and performances of
athletes. Because awards and recognitions change periodically, a list of recognitions is not stated in
this manual. Requirements for receiving certain awards, such as “letters and bars” may be established
as the athletic program grows.
Uniform check-in
All uniforms must be checked in with the athletic director within 7 school days following the
season’s end. Athletes are subject to disciplinary action for non-compliance.
OFF-SEASON POLICY
All athletes at ACA are encouraged to participate in as many sports as allowable in one school
year. It is our desire to see every athlete develop to his or her true potential by taking as many
opportunities as possible. These come in the form of camps, mission trips, team camps, leagues, clubs,
etc. Information will be made available about the opportunities.
