JOB TITLE: Director of Montserrat Retreat House
Position Summary
The primary duty of the Montserrat Retreat House Director is to direct and manage
the operations of the retreat house so that it can remain fiscally sound and thus
provide a viable location to facilitate the encounter between God and the human
person by means of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. We do this at Montserrat
primarily, but not exclusively, by offering preached weekend retreats. The Director
is appointed by the Provincial of the U. S. Central and Southern Province and serves
at the pleasure of and is responsible to the Montserrat Board of Trustees for all
planning, organizing and directing necessary to accomplish the Montserrat Mission
Statement. In addition, the Director is responsible for the staff so as to ensure a
smooth execution of everyday retreat house operations.
Candidates must be Roman Catholics in good standing with the Catholic Church and
belong to a local Catholic parish.
Key Responsibilties and Accountabilities
1. Maintains the Catholic and Ignatian identity of Montserrat.
2. Maintains a good working relationship between Montserrat Retreat House
and local dioceses, particularly the home Diocese of Ft. Worth.
3. Develops, implements and oversees plans to increase attendance at retreats
and public awareness of Montserrat Retreat House.
4. Develops and implements a plan to generate and control financial resources
(including the Annual Giving Campaign and capital drives) such that the
financial viability and independence of Montserrat Retreat House are
maintained, and the financial support for the Jesuit Community assigned to
Montserrat Retreat House ministry is provided.
5. Keeps as a priority the aggressive recruiting of retreatants through an
effective captain/recruiter system.
6. Establishes systems and structures to operate the retreat house effectively
and efficiently.
7. In collaboration with the Jesuits missioned to Montserrat
a. Generates retreat schedules
b. Appoints retreat directors
c. Appoints Jesuits to provide sacramental ministry for all retreats.
8. Coordinates all activities with the Monserrat Jesuit Community.
9. Recruits Retreat directors and guides the education and development of
future retreat directors through the Ignatian Spirituality Institute and other
means.
10. Promotes the continuing education and spiritual development of all staff and
retreat directors.
11. Hires and supervises all staff members of Montserrat Retreat House.
12. Determines appropriate
a. Staff levels
b. Staff performance evaluations
c. Staff compensation and accountability
in order to assure the effective and efficient operations of Montserrat.
13. Oversees the maintenance and provision of attractive and adequate facilities
for retreatants and participants of other programs at Montserrat.
14. Assures that all staff, retreatants, supporters, and suppliers of Montserrat
Retreat House are treated with the respect and dignity to which all are
entitled.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications and Abilities Required













Must have an understanding of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of
Loyola and the mission of the Society of Jesus.
Must have a minimum of five years of broad experience in successful
leadership/managerial positions.
Must have experience in religious organizations and/or retreat ministry.
Must have a good understanding of problem solving techniques and be able
to apply these in an effective way.
Ability to communicate effectively the mission of Montserrat to the public.
Ability to work and interact well with the staff and to assist them to develop
their potential so as to maximize their contributions to the ministry.
Ability to work collaboratively with men and women as peers (be they
religious or lay).
Proficiency with personal computers, software applications, such as but not
limited to Windows, Excel, Powerpoint and typical office equipment such as
copier, scanner, fax, etc.
Interpersonal skills to effectively and sensitively communicate with all levels
of supervisory and nonsupervisory employees, vendors, members of the
public and others both inside and outside Montserrat.
Written and reading comprehension: must be able to read and understand
information and ideas presented in writing and communicate effectively in
writing.
Oral comprehension: Ability to listen to and understand information and
ideas presented through spoken words and sentences and must be able to
convey information effectively.
Deductive reasoning: Ability to apply general rules to specific problems in
order to achieve logical responses.
Critical thinking: Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths
and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to
problems.

Complex problem solving: Ability to identify complex problems and review
related information to develop and evaluate options and implement
solutions.
Education



Masters Degree with a major in theology, spirituality, religious education or
related field is desirable. Comparable experience in the above mentioned
fields will be considered in place of a Masters Degree.
Formal training in management/leadership is highly desirable.
Ability to speak, read, and write Spanish is highly desirable.
