PG . 4 J U NE 2015 K PINHIG H Rules Corner Chairman, Barbara Weisend Unplayable Lie Mt. Course—Hole 11 Since our first play day on the Mt. Course is June 1, I thought it would be a good time to address an unusual situation many of us could face on hole 11. Just to the left of the green on hole 11 on the Mt. Course, there is a bunch of tall weed-like plants. It is NOT a hazard, so you may not simply take it out of that mess and drop it, taking one stroke. However, you can declare it unplayable and take two club lengths relief (not nearer to the hole) FROM WHERE THE BALL LIES. Then you must DROP the ball. Actually, rule 28 gives you two other options also. You can take stroke and distance and hit another ball from where you took that shot, of course adding a stroke. Or you can keep the ball in line with the flag and go straight back as far as you like, adding a stroke. You cannot take relief and then take two club lengths. Don’t confuse an unplayable lie with being in a hazard. In “Decisions on the Rules of Golf,” it has an interesting entry that would apply if two club-lengths does not provide you with enough relief: 28/3 Ball Dropped Under Unplayable Ball Rule Comes to Rest in Original Position or Another Position at Which Ball is Unplayable. Q. A player deemed his ball unplayable and, under Rule 28c, dropped his ball within two clublengths of the spot where it lay. The ball came to rest in the original position at which the ball was unplayable. What is the ruling? A. The ball was in play when it was dropped—Rule 20-4. Thus, if the ball came to rest in the original position, the player must again invoke the unplayable ball rule, incurring an additional penalty stroke, unless he decides to play the ball as it lies. The same applies if the ball came to rest in another position at which it was unplayable. I talked to Robyn some time ago about this and she said there is no reason to make it a hazard. Remember…“If you are not playing by the rules, you are not playing golf.”
