MINTO CUP FINALS – GAME ONE
Township of Langley, BC (Thursday, August 25, 2016) Game One of the Minto Cup Finals will be remembered
for two things: goaltending and a lack of offense. Both teams combined for five goals, but the bigger story
was that of Northmen number one Nolan Clayton and Adanac’s ace Christian Del Bianco.
When asked about the rival goaltender Orangeville Head Coach DJ Clevely said, “he’s the best I’ve seen in a
long time, so you’ve got to hit your shots and we didn’t hit them tonight.”
Del Bianco stopped 42 of 44 shots sent his way while his counterpart stopped 31. The game was offensively
quiet with the lone goal in the first coming from Dereck Downs. The Northmen answered back with an early
goal in the second from Jeff Henrick. Coquitlam followed suit with a goal from Jean-Luc Chetner, but Matt
Gilray tallied a late second period goal to notch the game at two. Dennon Armstrong gave the Adanacs the 32 lead in the third and although they went through some dicey moments in the final frame, Coquitlam held
on for the Game 1 victory.
“To win 3-2, as an offensive coach, it’s obviously not a perfect game but we dug deep and our defense played
well enough to hold them to two,” said Assistant Coach Kyle Sorensen. “I was curious to see how the
outcome was going to be with everyone kind of knowing each other a little bit better now, but we aren’t
really worried about the outcome we are more concerned about the process.”
“Forget about tonight and go out and play and hopefully defensively we build off our play, push the pace, and
finish on some of our opportunities. We are not going to change our game plan at all it is going to be the
same,” said Coach Clevely.
