5 on 5 on 5 Tournament Rules
For those who have not played a tournament with a 5/5/5 format, the
main question asked is “How do you play?”. Below is a brief
description of the basics of a 5/5/5/ format.
A team consists of a minimum of 5 players on the roster. However, your roster can
include up to 12 men for this tournament. You will be allowed a DH as well as a base
running specialist per game. A base running specialist will not bat but is allowed
unlimited substitutions on the bases throughout the game.
Your lineup will consist of either 5 or 6 batters, depending on whether or not a DH is
used. When your team is up to bat, all normal ASA rules apply with the exception of your
base running specialist. Your team will bat until 3 outs are made by the defending teams.
Once you have made 3 outs, you will send 5 players (in the lineup) to the 5 available
outfield positions. These positions will be LF, LCF, RCF, RF, and C. You will play these
positions until 3 outs are made by the new team at bat. Once 3 outs are made, your 5
players will assume the 5 infield positions which include
1B, 2B, 3B, SS, and P. You will play these infield positions until the new team batting has
made 3 outs. This will conclude a full inning. A full game consists of 4 full innings,
meaning your 5 players will bat 4 times, play the outfield 4 times, and play the infield 4
times. This format allows for players to play multiple positions and get multiple at-bats
in one single game.
Because 3 teams play against each other as well as with each other, different rules are in
place for determining winners and losers and who advances to the 2nd round of play. At
the end of a game, just like a regular game, your run total will determine the winner and
loser. However, since there are 3 teams involved in
each game, a points system is established. The team with the most runs scored receives
3 points, while the team that scored the 2nd most runs will receive 2 points. The team
with the fewest runs scored will receive a point. If two teams score the same amount of
runs after 4 innings, they will both receive the same amount of points for the place
finished. (Example, if both teams tie for 2nd, they each receive 2 points.) Teams
advancing to the 2nd round will be the ones with the most points accumulated in 1st
round play. Tiebreakers for advancement into the 2nd round will be determined by total
runs scored in tournament.
