ESE in the Basic Classroom

What is a T/IEP?
T/IEP stands for a
Transition/Individual Education Plan
and is a legal document that is used
to identify and meet the needs of
students who are eligible for the
Exceptional Student Education (ESE)
services.
Individuals with
Disabilities ACT – IDEA ’97
The basic education teacher
must participate in the
development, review, and
revision of the child’s T/IEP.
Basic Education Teacher
Roles:
Providing input utilizing the basic
education teacher input form prior
to the scheduled T/IEPmeeting
Implementing the T/IEP by providing
the student’s legal accommodations
Basic Education Teacher
Roles:
Documenting accommodations that
the student utilizes and the
effectiveness of the accommodation
on the Accommodation Log provided
by the ESE case manager
Attending scheduled T/IEP meetings
Accessibility Logs:
ESE Teachers will be sending out e-mails
containing password protected PDFs of
ESE student’s T/IEPs. Please do NOT
print PDFs, instead create a folder in your
Outlook program named “Accessibility
Logs” or “ESE”. You will be receiving
individual e-mails for each ESE student.
Accessibility Log E-mails will also contain:
• The student’s individual Accommodation Log (Word document) –
where the student’s individual legal accommodations will be listed
at the bottom of the log.
• Purpose of log: document the date, accommodation, and
effectiveness of the accommodation you provided easily for the
ESE student.
• It is recommended that these logs be maintained digitally from a
folder on your desktop versus using a printed version (saving
paper).
• These logs should ONLY need to be filled out when the
accommodation is used by the student.
What are accommodations?
Accommodations are practices and procedures
in the areas of presentation, response, setting,
and timing/scheduling that provide equitable
access during instruction and assessments for
students with disabilities. Accommodations are
intended to reduce or even eliminate the effects
of a student’s disability; they do not reduce
learning expectations.
Accommodations
Please keep in mind, if you give
an accommodation to the whole
class, it is no longer an ESE
specific accommodation. It is an
accommodation when it is only
provided to the ESE student.
